Comrade

It was a while back that Clarissa was surprised to find an old friend wanting to see her. Despite being in the same city they were both always too busy to catch up, that’s just how their friendship was. Not bothering with formal greetings Emma and Clarissa were happy to hang out, and soon, Emma revealed the real reason for her visit. The women switch to professional mode as Emma spoke briefly and showed her some bloody currency. The story of an injured man demanding medicine aggressively didn’t seem too out of the normal to Clarissa but she accepted the notes Emma gave her. Despite realising this may be of no use to them, Clarissa was intrigued and decided to send the bloody notes to the lab for testing. She did not think of it since.

Then a few days ago, she sees Emma yet again, this time the visit did not involve anything serious. Deciding she needed a break from such an unhealthy and hectic schedule, Clarissa gladly accepted Emma’s offer to buy her coffee. What followed was a lot of small talk and some light hearted jokes but something had then hit her. Upon her return, Clarissa got the result of the notes Emma gave her from the lab.

“This is really something,” Clarissa says as her eyes scan the papers in front of her. She then throws them on the desk as she hears a knock on her door.

“Hello there.”

“Emma,” Clarissa says relaxing her stern expression. “Thanks for meeting me here.”

“No problem,” Emma replies. “Is it officer or should we just go by names?”

“You tell me, doctor. I do want your professional opinion after all.” The women laugh and Emma sits down next to a messy desk, she scans it taking in as much as she can and fighting every urge to go through everything.

“So, I shall get to the point, this is about what you told me. That man at the hospital,” Clarissa’s tone was now stern, sitting straight and making eye contact, she showed Emma what to expect from someone in her position. “Why did you think it was important to report him, informally.”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

“When it happened, I did think it was important to report him. He was a patient and I was aware of his history and was obviously worried. I knew it would be difficult to do something if I just went to the station to make a complaint so I spoke to you.”

“Any other reason,” Clarissa asked.

“If I am being honest, I found something different about him. I gave you the currency he threw at the register because I was hoping you would confirm something.”

“And what is that?”

“I think you know,” Emma smirked as her eyes visited the file that was thrown on the table for a split second.

“What if you’re wrong?” Clarissa replies.

“What else do you want to ask me?” Emma doesn’t hesitate to guide the conversation. Right now, the two women both wanted to discuss the same thing, but rushing into it wasn’t the way to go. And so, they continued playing this word game, dancing around the point while occasionally visiting it.

Back at the apartment, Oscar is sitting alone watching a movie. He doesn’t pay attention as he stares into space, trying not to entertain a single thought. He watches as the actors on screen demonstrate their emotions through tears and outbursts as me mechanically stares at the screen. Soon he hears the door open behind him and he speaks.

“Can you make some tea for me? I’m thirsty.”

“You want me to make you tea?” Ben asks as he approaches Oscar who does not turn back to look at him.

“I thought it was Ann.” Oscar replies as if glued to his seat.

“I don’t mind making some tea for you…”

“That’s ok,” Oscar immediately replies as he recalls the time Ben did make tea for them. It wasn’t that Ben was a bad cook, Oscar has just always been hesitant with Ben’s tea-making skills after that one accidental disaster.

“What are you watching?” Ben asks as he comes closer to him.

“Not sure,” Oscar replies. “Join me?” This was normal for the both of them, an easy escape from awkward conversation, they just let some random movies fill the silence between them.

“No,” Ben says turning off the movie. “We need to talk!” Ben says in a serious tone as Oscar looks at him surprised. This was the first time he had seen Ben like this since the incident and he was in no mood to go along with it.

“What now?” Oscar replies irritably. “And let’s not repeat ourselves.”

“You are going to meet Fiona and talk to her,” Ben spoke sternly as Oscar ignores him. About a minute later he repeats himself as Oscar sighs, finally deciding to answer.
