Isolation

As Ann wakes up the next morning, she slowly opens her eyes and notices an unfamiliar ceiling. She looks to the right and sees Nicholas sitting on a chair next to her. In a moment she begins to get a horrible stench. She sits up and asks.

“Nick, where am I?”

Just then Nicholas hugs her. Not holding anything back Nicholas embraces her tightly this time making her feel uncomfortable.

“You remember I made a promise to you yesterday,” Nicholas says while hugging her. “I am going to tell you the truth right now. I killed Scarlet and Gregory.” These blunt words shock Ann as she suddenly wants to move away from Nicholas. His voice is cold and uncaring when he admitted to murder and his embrace is very different from what it usually is. She is so scared to fight him that he she stays still.

“I’m sorry if I am scaring you,” Nicholas says as he moves slightly away, loosening his grip from her, now looking into her eyes. “I am willing to explain myself to you if you give a chance.” Ann nods her head unsure of what will happen. He nods his head and says, “how about we go outside for a walk. We’ll talk there.”

Nicholas says as he leaves the room immediately. Ann composes herself quickly and looks around the room. She finds her phone on the desk right next to her and switches it on. She is about to send her location to Oscar but in a moment she hesitates. The man she loves has claimed to kill two people and she knows she has to do the right thing. But the memories of her and Nicholas suddenly comes back like a river, causing her to question herself.

‘I have to do what’s right!’ Ann thinks, ignoring those memories and the emotions that accompany. She pressed send, sending her location to her brother with the word ‘HERE’. She gets up hides the phone under the mattress, not sure what to expect. She knows if Nicholas killed Scarlet, he might be ready to kill her too, but she doesn’t want to believe that. She stands in front of the door just as Nicholas opens it startling Ann.

“I’m sorry,” Nicholas says as he holds Ann’s hand, this time with love in his eyes. “Close your eyes…downstairs is…messy.”

Ann closes her eyes and follows Nicholas who leads her by hand. As she does, she can’t help but wonder why she trusts enough to close her eyes and be led by him. He could be leading her to her death for all she knew, but the warmth of his hand wipes away all her doubt as she again feels secure around him. Soon they are outside and Ann takes a deep breath of fresh air, leaving that cabin and the horrible stench that was in it. She sees Nicholas taking a few steps ahead of her and she asks.

“You killed Scarlet and Gregory?” Ann asks nervously, standing behind Nicholas as he stops in his tracks. He nods his head and Ann takes a few steps closer to him. “Why?”

“Just because,” Nicholas replies as he starts walking not looking at her. Ann begins to walk beside him looking at his face as he avoids eye contact.

“And you planned to pin it on Benjamin?” Ann asks.

“No,” Nicholas replies. “That just happened. It wasn’t my intention.”

“Weren’t you at a live event that day?” Ann asks.

“It just said it was live. The event was recorded a few hours prior to its broadcast,” Nicholas says. “It was a good alibi.”

“You knew my brother was a cop,” Ann says with a heavy heart. “Did you date me to get to him.” Just then Nicholas stops yet again and Ann stops, standing beside him. On his face, she sees yet another expression she hasn’t seen on him before. It was fear. Nicholas didn’t want Ann to hate him, but he knew he had to tell her the truth. As he takes a deep breath and answers.

“Yes and no,” Nicholas says. “At first I did date you as a cover-up but then I.”

Nicholas looks at Ann and says with all sincerity. “I had no idea Oscar was going to be assigned this case. When you asked me out I said yes because I thought it would be nice for my image and also I did think you were cute. I had no idea you knew Benjamin or that any of this would happen.” Nicholas looks at Ann and affectionately as he puts his hand on her cheek. “I had no idea someone would threaten you. Yesterday, I was the first time in a long time that I was scared I thought something would happen to you.”

“Why?” Ann asks. “Why did you kill them?” Nicholas looks at Ann who wants the answer. Nicholas takes a step back and looks around as he contemplates what to tell her.
