The next day, Oscar is at the police station going through details about sales of the Str8 hoodies. The number of people who bought the hoodie is a little over a hundred in online sales, which Oscar is tracking. As Oscar is doing this, Dean comes rushing into the room.
“You are not going to believe what I just found.”
“What?” Oscar asks curiously as he stands up and as a man is brought into the room. “Who is this?”
“Just someone I found on the side of the street,” Dean says as Oscar looks at the homeless man who looks confused at the situation. He is leaning on a crutch as he clearly has difficulty walking. Though it was difficult to recognize at first but the man was wearing a dirtied Str8 hoodie. “Look,” Dean says as he pulls up the man’s sleeve and reveals a heart tattoo on his arm.
“Oh my goodness,” Oscar says as he gets close to Dean’s ear and whispers. “Where did you find this guy?”
“I was out having a donut near this hospital when I saw this guy going through the trash,” Dean says smiling. “He says he’s been hanging around the hospital for a while, I think he might have something to do with Gregory’s death.”
“I’m sorry sir,” the homeless man says sounding panicked. “I had nothing to do with anyone’s death, I am innocent. Please believe me.”
“Don’t worry Mr…” Oscar says calmly.
“Mike. Call me Mike,” the man replies.
“Mike, we would like to ask you a few questions,” Oscar says. “Would you like something to eat first?”
Mike happily agrees and they take him into a room and give him something to eat and a glass of water while Oscar and Dean watch him through a glass window.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“What do you think? Is he faking?” Oscar asks.
“I don’t think so,” Dean replies. “He clearly has a problem with his leg, we checked,” Dean says as he pauses for a moment. “But it makes no sense how a man like that could get an expensive foreign hoodie.” Dean and Oscar watch the man eating, as he looks grateful for the food. “The biggest problem, in this case, is motive. Why would someone other than Benjamin want to kill either Scarlet or Gregory?”
“I have been thinking about that,” Oscar says. “What if this isn’t some motive-driven murder. What if it was just for fun?”
“What do you mean?” Dean asks. “There has been no report of a serial killer in town.”
“No, but there has been a record of one serial killer that keeps skipping town after murdering a few people,” Oscar says as Dean begins to think about this possibility. “All of this makes no sense, he didn’t kill Gregory the first time, but assuming he made a mistake and thought he was dead, why didn’t he try to kill him after that?” Oscar says as he continues thinking for a moment. “What if he didn’t care that Gregory was alive because he got Scarlet. What if he thought Gregory would wake up long after he had left town? So even if Gregory said something, he would never be caught.”
“He didn’t care to kill Gregory until he found out he woke up,” Dean says. “Do you think this guy is still in town?” Following this discussion, they enter the room where the homeless man is waiting for them.
“Thank you so much, officers. You are so kind,” Mike says.
“Don’t worry about it, we have to ask you a few questions,” Oscar says.
“Where did you get that hoodie?” Dean asks.
“This thing, it was given to me by my friend Ronnie.” Mike replies.
“Ronnie?” Dean asks suspiciously.
“Yes. He told me I could have it,” Mike says smiling seemingly grateful for the hoodie.
“I see; Mike could you please explain further. That hoodie your wearing is very expensive and could belong to someone else,” Oscar says.
“I didn’t steal it; I swear,” Mike says defensively. “Ronnie said he found this in the dumpster the day he gave it to me. I swear I am telling the truth.” The man’s words make them think for a moment. With nothing else to go on and sure that Mike, a man who has trouble walking, couldn’t have done it. They take a leap of faith, they inform officers around town to keep an eye out for this Ronnie guy, a man who Mike described in detail. As Oscar and Dean break for lunch that afternoon, someone is waiting for Oscar outside the station.
