Restraint

Ann slowly opens her eyes as her head feels heavy, she tries to move and realizes she is restrained. She allows herself to lie back down and closes her eyes tight, trying to comprehend what has happened. Opening her eyes slowly, her vision slowly gets steady as she looks around. She finds herself in a plain white room, a lot of plastic laid out on the floor and she is strapped to a chair that is leaning back. She takes a few deep breaths attempting to calm down and think about her surroundings. A window that is taped shut, freshly painted walls and nothing unique that could give her any clues; she begins to wonder what day it is. She tries to move and she soon hears someone at the door. Though panicked, Ann decides to pretend to be passed out.

“This is stupid boss, why are you doing this to her?” She hears the footsteps of two men walking in.

“I told you some things are personal.”

‘That voice! It’s familiar.’ Ann thinks.

“What about me?” the other man says. “You promised.”

“Just trust me. Some of these things take time and you will be all right soon. Heck, she could be the one too, you have the same blood type.”

“I know. I just hope this works.”

“It will.” Despite the one saying having a calm and assuring voice there was something about it that just made the listener uncomfortable. Despite this feeling, she was left with a lot of questions and she begins finding it difficult to control her fear. Her mind rushes in different directions, all considering different scenarios, but she tries to focus on their conversation hoping for answers.

“Should I wake her up?” Ann feels the man touching her arm and she cannot stop herself from trembling.

“You don’t have to. Look who’s awake!” Ann doesn’t open her eyes but someone twists her hand causing her to react. Looking up she now sees Kane but next to him, the man whose hand is touching her arm is none other than Dr. Kai.

“Kai?” Ann says, her voice trembling and her eyes wide open in complete and utter shock.

“Surprise,” Kai says. “You missed me, didn’t you?”

“Kane?” Ann says while still staring at Kai. “Why are you doing this?” she asks now turning to the other man, noticing his pale face. “What is happening Kane? Just talk to me.”

“Not Kane,” Kai says with a calm smile followed by a giggle. “Allow me to introduce to you, Python.” Ann looks at the man, who looks sick but his emotionless smile sends chills down her spine.

“You’re his psychologist, aren’t you? We met a few times but we didn’t get a proper chance to talk” Ann is frozen in fear and is unable to answer him properly.

“Ok, I’ll be nice,” Kai says. “Allow me to introduce myself, I am Kai and this is Python, my dear brother. Thank you for taking care of my other brother Kane, he was such a delicate soul. It’s very unfortunate that he gets blamed for everything we do.”

“What…” Ann says trying to take in all the information that was in that sentence. A strange day and a strange situation, she realises that her patient’s story was true, every bit of it. A man who was declared crazy for telling the truth. She did have a few questions as well, many questions, but before begins to grasp reality as Python violently grabs her hair and she lets out a scream.

“That’s the matter? Don’t want to talk now?”

“Let her go.” The man immediately does so but his eyes stay on her as she tenses up.

“What do you have against me?” Ann says with her voice trembling. “What did I ever do to you?”

“Isn’t that unusual,” Kai says sarcastically. He then comes close to her and whispers in her ear. “You protected the man we were after.” His breath lightly brushes her ear and she trembles as she looks at him, expecting more details. “That man you took in, the one you found unconscious in that cabin that day, he was supposed to be mine. He somehow managed to escape, I would have had the final laugh too if you and your boyfriend wouldn’t have interfered.”

“All of this was because of Andrew,” Ann says with nervousness and then she notices the anger in his voice.

“Yes, that man…Andrew or Nick or whatever he decides to call himself,” Kai seems in control of his tone as Ann hopes he does not let out his fury. “Just tell me why you want to help him. Are you one of those types that just want to fix everyone and everything? I always hated your kind, a disgusting reason to become a doctor.” Ann is unable to say a word as he rolls his eyes. “Forget it, the past is just a waste of time. But now, let’s see what you can do for me.”

“What?” Ann says. “This doesn’t make any sense, why are you after him? What did he do? And what do you mean what I can do for you?”

“So many questions,” Kai says as Python grabs her hair again and she screams.
