Ann’s fury could not be more obvious, even Nicholas flinched on seeing the fire in her eyes.
“What did I say?” Emma rushes to Ann’s side gesturing her to calm down. Taking a violent breath, she notices her friend next to her only when Emma’s nails dig into her skin.
“I know,” Ann whispers as she leaves the apartment without saying a word, obviously about to go confront Oscar. Emma tries to give a comforting smile to Andrew who nods, knowing she is about to hunt down her best friend. As Emma runs out of the apartment, she quickly catches up to Ann.
“Where are we going?” Emma asks.
“To talk to Oscar.”
“Just talk or…,” Ann’s eyes pierce Emma, as her playful face slowly turns serious. “Look, I don’t think making a scene at his workplace is a good idea.”
“He’s not at work,” Ann says as they reach the parking lot. Oscar is standing by his car. He stands there with the keys in his hand, thinking back on the events of the day. He doesn’t notice his sister stomping and fast approaching.
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?” Ann’s words echo in the empty parking lot. Oscar is stunned seeing her this angry as Emma steps forward trying to stop her. “Don’t touch me!”
“Ann, what’s wrong?” Oscar asks genuinely concerned.
“Why? You think he hurt me? Is that it?”
“Ann, I’m sure he didn’t but this is police work. I know your sympathetic because he’s your patient but.”
“You think this is about Kane?” Ann asks, sounding disgusted by her brother’s lack of understanding. Oscar stands there a moment as Emma speaks up.
“It’s about Andrew. He told her you took him to a crime scene.”
“He what?” his words echo just as Ann’s did but Ann doesn’t let him continue in his rant.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
“What is that supposed to mean? Did you scare him into not telling me?”
“Ok, now your just being dramatic. Why would I ever do that?” Oscar replies defensively, trying to keep calm while dealing with his hysterical sister.
“You tell me! Why would you do that? Because you think this guy is Nicholas, don’t you?”
“Why do you?” Oscar’s patience is at an all-time low right now as Ann looks like she is about to hit him.
“You really need to let that one go you know. You can’t solve them all. It was a sad case, Ben got over it and so should you,” Ann says sternly as Oscar is now mad with rage.
“Ben got over it?” Oscar voice now trembles in rage. “You really think he just got over it? Or is he just tired of being disappointed by you?”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“IT MEANS,” Oscar pauses and then lowers his voice. “You have not been honest with either of us and everyone knows it. I haven’t given up hope that you will one day come clean but Ben… Do you really think he’s happy with you defending a man who has killed his ex-wife.”
“Ben has made amazing progress and he has moved on…”
“Moved on? You think this is about moving on! People were killed Ann; this isn’t something you just let go of. You cannot let go of something like this. I cannot, especially when I know I have a chance to catch a serial killer.”
“Oscar!” Ann now has tears in eyes as Emma stands back and watches this exchange, shocked by her friend’s behaviour. “How many times do I have to…”
“Ann, do I really look that stupid to you?” Oscar says as his turns away. “We aren’t kids anymore Ann. I am not going to pretend things are the way you want them to be. The truth is, even when I gave you evidence, you always made excuses.”
“That’s because those are assumptions,” Ann tries to defend.
“Really? Then what about today? What if you’re wrong about Kane.” This name rings a bell for Emma as Ann is left speechless.
“Ok, but that’s different. With Nicholas,” Ann tries to explain but Oscar is emotionally exhausted.
“You know what Ann, I care about facts, whether you like it or not. I did what I thought was right. And I did it to protect you.”
“From what? Andrew is innocent and Nicholas…,” Oscar raises his eyebrows as Emma too notices a change in her voice as she pleaded these words.
“I’ve heard that too many times. Same line, different name,” Ann is left unable to say anything else. “And just so you know, all this time I was trying to protect you from yourself and your decisions.” Having said enough Oscar gets into his car and drives off, leaving Ann shaking and crying. Emma tries to comfort her but Ann doesn’t say a word as she just cries silently.
Meanwhile, back at the apartment, Andrew is unable to sleep. He slowly gets up, wondering where everyone is but is too tired to leave the apartment to investigate. With a bad headache, he goes to find some medicine. Looking through the desk drawers he finds something he’s sure wasn’t there before. Hidden in plain sight was an envelope, he curiously opens it and his jaw drops on reading the contents.
