At the hospital Ann and Ben sit outside after hearing the news, the man has amnesia.
‘This means he doesn’t remember who he is or anything about his past,’ Ann thinks as she can hear the doctors in the other room discussing the situation. Ann and Ben sit side by side, silently in a daze both thinking. A part of Ann would like to believe this man is not Nicholas but she cannot ignore the hope that this man may be her old lover. Of course, she will never tell Ben that.
‘What if he’s just acting. He did a good job of hiding among us like last time. He even convinced Ann that he’s innocent. I don’t trust him.’ Ben thinks as memories flood his mind. He has always wanted justice and he cannot ignore the resemblance or his gut feeling.
“Well, he doesn’t seem to remember anything,” Kai says as he approaches the couple.
“Will he be alright?” Ben asks.
“Well, he’s not bleeding but certainly some damage has been done. I think we can…,” before Kai can finish his words Ann interrupts him.
“Maybe we can help,” Ann says as Ben looks at her surprised. “I am a psychologist; I have a friend that has done extensive study on amnesia and I don’t mind helping him out.”
“Are you sure?” Kai asks. “This will not be easy. I mean, he doesn’t know where he lives and…”
“I know,” Ann replies. “We’ll treat him and help him get back on his feet.” Just as Ann says these words Ben eyes catch onto the opportunity in front of him.
“That’s right, we’ll take care of him… If that’s alright with you?”
“I have no objections but you’ll have to ask him too.”
With these words Dr. Kai goes and speaks to the man. Ann and Ben still don’t talk to each other both preoccupied with their own thoughts and intentions. Dr. Kai announces that the man agrees to speak to them before he makes a decision and so, Ann and Ben enter the room. There sits the man on the bed with bandages around his head, looking around a little confused but with a child-like curiosity. As the strangers enter the room the man looks at them cautiously for a few moments.

“Hello,” he says nervously.
“Hi,” Ann replies. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” the man says as he looks at Ben. “I heard you were the one who helped me. Thank you.”
“It was nothing,” Ben replies apathetically.
“We heard you don’t remember anything about your past,” Ann says as the man nods looking upset. “Well, if you want, we can help you out.”
“I heard the doctor say, thank you so much for your offer,” the man says earnestly.
"I’m sure they told you that I’m a psychologist. I have a friend that can help you. You don’t need to worry about anything, you will have our complete support.”
“I feel like I want to say yes,” the man says softly as Ann’s face brightens with his words. “I really don’t know what to say or where to start.”
“Let’s start with what should we call you?” Ann says smiling as the man looks confused and disappointed at the fact he can’t remember his own name.
“I’m not sure…” he murmurs.
“How about Nicholas,” Ben says still standing at the corner of the room. “For now, till you remember.” In Ann’s mind, there’s no way Ben is convinced of what Ann hopes for, so she stares at him, pondering.
“That sounds good,” the man says innocently. “Nicholas…” The man seems oblivious to the tension in the room as Ann and Ben now meet eye to eye.
The man stays in the hospital for an extra day while Ben and Ann finally discuss the situation. Ensuring to keep Nicholas out of the conversation, they decide to let him stay with them. Armed with different motives Ben and Ann decided to drive the recently named Nicholas back to their place.
“I really can’t thank you enough for what you’re doing for me,” Nicholas says as he enters their apartment.
“We know, this is the fiftieth time you said it,” Ben says sounding annoyed.
“I’ll show you to the guestroom, you can freshen up,” Ann says.
“Thanks.” As Nicholas goes to freshen up. Ann stares then at Ben who’s been growing increasingly annoyed with Nicholas.
“Would you stop that.” Ann says.
“What? He does not stop thanking us, it’s getting annoying,” Ben replies.
“We promised to help him. Be a bit more patient.”
“Fine,” Ben says knowing he has been short-tempered the entire drive home. Knowing what he does, that fact that Ben hasn’t attacked the man should have been an achievement.
‘It’s for the best’ Ben and Ann think. As everyone freshens up and makes themselves comfortable, Ann and Ben are secretly preparing for the truth.
