Episode 13-Here comes America

"David if you as much as hear a gunshot just come back immediately. We can easily find a job for you with our help here." Dad warned me for the 12th time.

I smiled as I nodded and packed up my belongings.

Dad booked me a ticket to New York, Manhattan. Not just that as a present they bought me a really good laptop that he could buy in 2006.

I am really grateful to my parents and if I could help it, I would make sure the shitstorm that is meant to affect the world just wouldn't affect where they are staying or their life.

I went away from my crying mum, brother and my dad who looked happy for me, but I knew he was sad to see me go.

I arrived at Manhattan airport after 12 hours.

I had booked a hotel for a day and dropped off my stuff there before I went out to a local library where they had a computer with an internet connection.

I set up a job application on a hire me website.

'Jack Of All Trades!

Consultation on any field of research and projects, including ethical hacking.

Price varies depending on the project.

If not satisfied with work will guarantee a 100% refund.

My e-mail is: [email protected]

After that, I looked up for some houses which I could rent out for a few months.

Seeing a retailer, I took note of their address and made my way there.

"Hi, how can I help you?" The man asked.

"I want a house with a reliable internet connection inside the town itself," I told him.

"Internet connection? Would you pay for it yourself separately or should it be included in the rent?" He asked me.

"I don't mind," I answered.

"When are you free? If you are free now we can go see 3 houses now." He asked me.

I nodded. "Yeah, I am free now."

"Ok, just give me a moment." He said as he grabbed his jacket and car keys.

He led me to the parking area where a 2006 Honda Civic was parked.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"So what do you do?" He asked me as he started the car.

"I graduated from Oxford University with a Master in Physics. I am currently working as a freelance consultant for researchers, and companies. I also do a bit of ethical hacking." I told him.

"Hacking? As in where you steal information from companies?" He asked me suspiciously.

"No ethical hacking is where the company hires you to hack their own company," I told him.

"Why would companies do that?" He looked surprised as we drove off from the parking lot.

"To test their online defence. If their defence is weak I would then proceed to find the weak spot and fix it." I explained to him.

"Ohh. I didn't know there was a job like that." He said with fascination.

"Well, most people don't, which is why we get paid a lot," I told him.

He looked almost jealous.

We soon arrived and saw the 3 houses. I just picked the house with the best and reliable internet connection. I agreed to the rent of $1,500 per month and signed the deal.

I had to spend the money I saved up from my student's loan on the rent and only had $200 dollars left in my account.

After receiving the documents and key I decided to stay in the hotel tonight and move in tomorrow.

Next day I hired a cab to my new house and went in with my belongings.

I threw everything on the floor and connected my laptop to the internet immediately.

Going to the site I had received 3 job offers for ethical hacking who wanted to see me personally.

I shrugged my shoulders and accepted all 3 job offers. I send each of them an e-mail saying I would come to their office at different times tomorrow.

One at 9 am, the next at 1 pm and the last one at 4 pm.

After that, I began my true work.

I started looking up online for every detail I could about Aldrich Killian before I soon found the location of their server, where they stored everything about Extremis. They trusted their security so much that they left some important notes in there rather than as hard copies which was much more susceptible to destruction and stealing.

Besides this was 2006. Cybercrimes were hardly a thing now and so were hackers, unlike the future.

'Hack into their server and create a copy of all their data on Extremis Project before leaving. Don't leave a trace other than my iconic signature.' I ordered my ability.

Hacking onto their server my body quickly made a copy of everything before covering all my tracks and just leaving one clue there in case they ever realised someone had hacked into their server.

Throughout the night I looked through all their research and testing they have done on the Extremis and memorised it and comprehended it before deleting it. I had one goal in mind- to stabilise the Extremis and use it for myself.

'Start looking for solutions to stabilise the Extremis project.' I gave the order to my ability with how I wanted the Extremis to work in my mind.

Why do I think I could do something that 2 brilliant scientists and countless researchers could not have done for years even with all their experimental subjects? Where was my confidence stemming from?

My ability 'The Rooted Potato'. Sure, they have brilliant minds to think up ideas to stabilise it and ways to experiment on people. However, they were people that were specialised in one area unlike me who was specialised in multiple areas.

I was a jack of all areas and master of all areas. While they were just masters of one area.

For example, their chemist will get a think up idea and present it only to be suggested by their biologist it wouldn't work. Then both the Chemist and biologist would have to work together to find an idea which they present which their physicist would say wouldn't be possible.

While for me I didn't have to consult anyone waste time. All I needed was to pull the necessary knowledge from the correct section on how to stabilise it.

It was a bit like how having access to the internet where pulling information about different areas made research easier than not having it.

My ability soon started working, picking correct information from the countless books I had read and trying to use them to stabilise the Extremis.
