Few days passed and I stopped by Rogers’ room.
*Knock**Knock*
Rogers came and opened the door to see me.
“David?” He said while checking the time to see it was nearly 9 pm.
“Any mission?” He asked me.
“Go see Peggy. Both of you need to be with each other during her last moments.” I told him sadly. I wanted him to be there in her last moments.
I don’t want to one day die without Natasha by my side, neither would she.
His eyes widened before he took off after getting Bucky.
Few hours later we received a message.
Everyone was sad hearing Peggy passed away.
I sighed and sat down in our room in the facility and contemplated about my life and death.
I can be immortal and live forever if I wanted to along with Nat and anyone else, I chose.
But do I want to do that? No!
At first my goal was surviving the shit storm that was about to come. Now that we are nearly prepared and ready, I wanted to know if I wanted to live forever.
In the end I decided not to. Seeing everyone you know die while you are left alone will be horrible. Sure, I could give them immortality as well, but they too will have loved ones and close ones other than me.
In the end I would have to end up giving everyone immortality. If I don’t and just limit it to the people I love, then they will hate me for making them see what immortality is.
It is better that I let nature take its course.
Everyone has to die one day. Then why not die happy seeing all your loved one around you when you die. It was the best way to go.
“What are you thinking about?” Natasha asked as she sat beside me.
“I am thinking about my death.” I told her openly.
She looked at me with worry. “Tell me Natasha, do you want to live forever?” I asked her.
She was silent for a while before she shook her head. “No. Having to live forever means having to see everyone you love die. I do not want that.” She said quietly.
I sighed as I hugged her. “Same.”
“Then why were you looking so serious?” She asked me.
“I was thinking what if I could turn anyone, I loved immortal as well. Will you then choose to be immortal?” I answered her.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“Some deep things you think about.” She said quietly in my embrace.
“Look at Rogers.” Nat pointed out. “I have seen the pain Rogers felt when he realised, he didn’t have anyone anymore when he came out of ice.
Then he found Peggy followed by Bucky and he was so happy. But she left them.
Having the power of granting others immortality means either giving everyone in the universe it or being selfish and just keeping it amongst those you love, like a tyrant or dictator.
One will cause serious case of resource depletion and suffering and the other will cause your loved ones to hate you. Immortality isn’t a happy ending, is it?” She asked me at the end.
I shook my head at her question. “No, it isn’t.”
“You thought this through properly as well huh?” Nat smiled as she nodded while looking at her hands.
“The day you told me what you could do, I have been thinking what if.” I smiled hearing her.
We remained quiet for a while.
“Do you think there is anything after you are dead?” She asked me, causing me to remember El and the beautiful gates I had given up, to come here.
“What do you think?” I asked her back instead of replying.
“It would be nice if there was a nice heaven but knowing my past I probably would go to hell. So, it’s better not think about life after death for me and live my life treasuring the happy moments I have with you and Sasha.” I smiled as I shook my head.
“Unfortunately, there is something after death Nat.” Nat looked at me curiously but sadly at the same time.
She was quiet for a while, and seeing this I decided to just tell her. “Nat, I died a long time ago. And when I say long time ago, I meant 32 years ago.”
I felt her grip tightening on me.
“I died the funniest way possible. Two couples were arguing from a 7th or 8th floor of a flat and one of them threw a pan at the other who dodged it. The pan went through the window and landed on my head while I was walking home from work.” Nat did not say anything as she quietly listened.
I felt like laughing now thinking about the way I died but decided not to, seeing her serious expression.
I shielded the space around us away from any prying eyes and ears.
“I died and was in front of a person who stood before the most amazing gate I have ever seen. At first, I thought he was God, but he told me he was merely someone forced to act as a gatekeeper as part of his punishment by God, I think.” To think back to my origin was really refreshing.
“He then asked me if I wanted to participate in his entertainment since his partner went on holiday. I naturally agreed and the next moment I appeared in my 6 year old body in UK. The gatekeeper then proceeded to explain that he has given me 3 gifts to survive in this world. They were Rooted potato, Comfy potato and Same potato.” I told her, only to see a smile blossom on her serious face after a long time even though she tried not to smile.
“Yeah, I thought he had some addiction to potato at that time as well. But after he explained the gifts to me, I knew he was just joking with the names but not the gifts.
3 very special gifts that can resist the effect of one of the infinity gems that represent the singularity of this universe.
I have a doubt that in some way my other abilities could resist some applications of other infinity gems as well, but I don’t want to test that out.” I spoke and she listened to the truth I told no one in this world.
“You want to know the funny thing?” I asked her.
She nodded her head. “This is not my world. The gatekeeper sent me to a world similar to mine but vastly different with superheroes, magic, cosmic entities, advanced science etc. At first, I was scared because I knew the future of this world better than the time stone itself, so I decided to become ruthless and harsh both on myself and my future enemies.
But all that changed when you came into my life. That fear turned to conviction; conviction to protect you from your fate and to save everyone else.” I told her as I hugged her.
She didn’t say anything, and I was slightly worried about her having revealed the entire truth to her. “Do you think I am crazy?” I asked her after a while.
“No.” Nat replied back.
“Why?” I asked her.
“Because you are my husband, and you won’t lie to me.” She stated with conviction.
“That I won’t.” I kissed her forehead.
‘It’s not a lie if you hide the truth and never spoke of it.’
