Chapter 47
----------------------------------------
The following day, Lily was dozing off with Edelweiss on the horse. We were walking back to Regoia, which solicited a few curious gazes from others. We were supposed to be refreshed after a full day's rest back in reminiscence, but Edelweiss still looked tired.
"What time did you sleep, Lily?" Lhorne finally asked.
"Mmm… Huh? What?" Lily dazed off with a blank look.
"Does Reminiscence have a poor inn service to you?" Joseph asked.
"Ah. No! I just tried to walk around the city in excitement yesterday. I had no complaints about inn' service at all." Lily clarified.
"Alright then!"
We then slept and reached Regoia by dusk the next day. Any kind of monster was slain by the elven knights. Lily then asked for permission to return to the frontier village.
"You need a new name for that village, Lily. We can't call them frontier village forever!" Edelweiss complained.
"What kind of name would befit it, I wonder?"
"I leave that to you. Please keep last night a secret, okay? I had a fun time last night. Thank you for accompanying me." Edelweiss smiled and went on to her manor while we went to our village. It is finally time for my administration technique to shine. Let us see what Whanderbald has in store for us.
"Lhorne! Are you joining me?" Lily and Nora asked him.
"Of course. I am your citizen, remember? "He smiled. Oh, now that you mentioned it, Lily was promoted and now managed the entire frontier village. I thought Lhorne was living in Regoia while working as a ranger in a frontier village.
"You are right. Let us meet Whanderbald!" Lily shouted
We went on with the horse by ourselves for a while. Nearing midnight, we finally reached the village. Lhorne had no problem seeing the forest as the moon illuminated our path. His arrows immediately extinguished any kind of monster.
"The village center was closed…."
"Of course! It is midnight! Let's go to the inn right here." Lhorne sighed. He didn't expect Lily would want to meet with Wharne right now. I didn't care about him, but I was worried about Mattheus and Jack. "Lily, should we store our clothes at the inn and go to Mattheus instead?"
"Oh yeah! We forgot about him." Lily said. "But it is already midnight. Let us sleep. My butt is sore from all the horse riding."
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"Alright."
The following day we went to the village with all of our luggage. Mattheus was there, and the settlement was more lively than ever. All the tailfolk prisoners seemed to accept Mattheus though they were wary about other humans. Lily then looked for Mattheus, who now wielded a hoe.
"So, how's the village?" Lily asked. We already see some progress here and there. Farms were erected, and a lot of people were plowing the field. But there were no houses yet. Everyone still used tents.
"Pretty nice. Jack's got all the accounting, and we have Nana here to oversee the farming and Nini to oversee our poultry. Mr. Whanderbald pulled out some cash for the salted pork I hunted. The houses aren't progressing well due to the funds…."
"Yes. You need to focus on the farms. We would starve otherwise!" Lily nodded, seemingly accepting Mattheus's reasoning.
"Well, that's it, I guess. You sure went out for a long time. I am glad that you are okay. We are fine here, but ever since the trade began with the other village, we got some nasty looks. I got Nana and Nini as a mediator, but the only ones with math skills are Jack. And the town hall has some business with you."
"I see."
"Don't worry, Lily. I could do mathematics as well."
"Oh! Really? Then I will leave it up to you! Thank you!" Lily smiled as she looked into my tail while swinging it into her view.
"Next is Mr. Wharne. Let's go!" Lily pumped her fist.
Less than two hours later, We were interrogated by several elven bureaucrats. When we came to the village, there were no elves except Lhorne. This village was always devoid of elves. At most, there were only five who worked as an administrator here. But, as we were going inside the village center house, we found no elves here, and it was practically deserted except for a few tailfolk on cleaning duty. Mr. Wharne was nowhere to be seen. Were those elves on vacation? I had no idea about the calendar for elves. We might have arrived at the wrong time when everyone was having a day off.
"So, may I ask who you are? Where is Mr. Wharne?" Lily asked.
"Ah, Here is Wharnebald resignation letter. Wharnebald says he would not like to serve a lord who is not an elf. Together with him is the resignation letter of the other five elves." The bureaucratic elves handed me all the letters of their resignation.
"Ah… Does he want to serve Lord Edelweiss instead? I am still her vassal right? Why wouldn't he serve me?" Lily said while looking down. She looked up at the elves like her family, but this resignation letter seemed like a wake-up call. A truth that she dared not to look at. Some elves rejected her position. Either because of jealousy or pure racism.
"I see. Where is he now?"
"He is currently on his way back to his home city Remusphere. I have no further information to give you. He might start to look for other jobs in that village or become a government worker there." The elven bureaucrats said.
"So, are there any replacements? We would struggle as very few people could do administrative work. I think elves preferred to have elves handle the government office, right?" Lily asked cautiously. She could not act rashly now that she knew some elves hated tailfolk.
"No. We have no plan for any replacement. As Wharnebald is not a lord, this territory was under Regoia, but since you were acknowledged as a lord by Edelweiss and Ghander of Hoeth, all the village assets and local law are now under your command. Please refer to Book Of Law so that you do not make any contradictory laws between your jurisdiction and elven laws."
"I see." Lily nodded in understanding. At least these elves left in peace. I knew these elves were introverts and stuck up. We could fix this slowly. Besides, now that Wharnebald is gone, we could shape this village as our ideal home for tailfolk. Everyone profited. It seemed Wharne's desertion brought us luck instead.
"So, Lord Lily. We would like to ask about your 30 million gold repayment plan."
WHAT THE FUCK?
I screamed at the absurd amount he was talking about. Isn't our debt supposed to be somewhere in thirty or fifty thousand? I must have heard him wrong. Let me look at the papers!
