Chapter 36
----------------------------------------
"Lala!" Lily called her. Dawn arrived at the fort, and nothing attacked us in the evening.
"Greeting Lord Lily. I am here together with Lord Rhanderwald. I wish to learn your spells, Lord Lily." Lala curtsied to me. The lesson continued. As Lala and Rhander watched our mana, they made various comments.
"Hmm. The mana flowed from the tail and then went into the bucket already in fire attributes. This is more complex than I thought. So after that, we need to adjust this part…."
"Lord Rhander, how about we modify this part? We could lower the mana."
"No, the time it took would outweigh the benefit. Heat will dissipate into the air."
I tried to fill my empty feystone. However, no matter what I did, The mana won't change into water. Where did I go wrong?"
"Lala, where did I do wrong?" Lily finally asked after I prompted her. It was a little bit difficult conversing like this. But I got my point across to her as Lily asked Lala what went wrong with her magic.
"Hm… you need to take the mana. The attribute change is done through here." Lala showed me her ring. "Then, after the attribute changed, you formed the spell you need." It is hopeless, then. We don't have the ring.
"I don't have the ring…." Lily answered.
You can buy them for 15 thousand gold each. There are four main attributes. They are water, fire, earth, and wind; however, magics from the gods are ultimately boundless, so there are other types. Miss Edelweiss is a good example. And non-attributes such as these feystones." Rhander spoke while still investigating our spells. He then looked at us and finally understood. "My house is at Regoia. Here is my address. You may visit them once you have the ring. Though I couldn't provide you with the ring, I will not abandon the deal."
"Okay. Thank you." Lily nodded.
" Hmm… you may borrow them from the armory. However, they only had fire rings here since undeath was weak against them. I think only Artherna Academy has the complete set. But if it is just water, even Regoia had it."
"Lord Rhander…" Lala muttered while shocked.
"The moon and the stars conversed yesterday. Miss Lily had received none of the curricula from the forest. She neither knew law nor order, and thus, we agreed to use direct language; however, pay attention not to use it when other elves are around except Joseph and Lhorne. We had to avoid shaming our lord and ourselves." Rhander said. His tone changed at once.

Now that I had lost my chance to learn magic, we spent the day talking to Lala while Rhanderwald investigated my magic in more depth. He finally managed to copy our spells by the sunset. I am curious to know whether he is a genius or the standard graduate of sinctail academy.
"Thank you, lord Lily. Here is a token of our appreciation." He then handed me a bag worth 500 gold.
"Thank you!" Lily smiled
"Lord Rhander…" Lala looked at him
"Ahem! A lord can't have his subordinate pay for his meal. However, since you are a new lord and don't yet have financial freedom, last night's circumstances are understandable. I shall pay you money in addition as gratitude toward the spell you have taught us. Please don't mention this money to anybody else. Including Edelweiss and Lhorne…”
"I see? Why, though…"
"Because they would look at it as a bribe… in the elven kingdom, it is quite taboo to give money to lords unless it is taxes or commerce…." Lala commented. She frowned at Rhanderwald.
"It is not a bribe. The money was just to balance the trade. Create water was an ordinary spell that half of the sinctail academy learned. However, to boil water using a spell is usually a hobbyist spell and thus worth more in my eyes. Lala, watch your language when there are other people, okay?"
"Of course, Lord Rhander!" Lala bowed while smiling. Okay, we got our funds. We could now travel around the fort. I saw someone open a market in that particular section of the fort.
"Thank you!"
"You are most welcome! Please don't mention the money to anyone else." Rhander waved us goodbye, and we were done for today.
"Today was surprisingly peaceful. Want to walk on the wall?" Lily suggested
"Yes. I need to know the layout of the fort too. We need to know which section is which. I need to learn about the military organization from Lhorne, Joseph, and Rhander the next time we meet them." I answered.
We walked out to the wall and waved at the soldiers manning the walls. They saluted at once. Lily ignored them and looked outside, examining the battlefield. The wasteland was empty as all the monsters had disintegrated yesterday, leaving nothing. The only evidence that it existed was the wounds the soldiers received.
The sun finally set, and night came. We had already finished a round circling the perimeter of the fortress and got ready to head to bed. Lhorne, however, interrupted us as he gave us a big bag filled with feystones that we needed to fill. We used several hundred yesterday, and all the mages were meditating to refill their stones, and Edelweiss wanted us to help out.
"I wonder if I can fill these stones too… it feels like I was doing nothing while the others worked hard…." Lily commented. She didn't have a tale of fire and was ultimately useless. Sure she could learn the fundamentals of magic, but she didn't even have magic perception.
"You will have your work when the fort is attacked."
"But Rhander and Joseph were fighting yesterday. Should I become rear guard, or should I charge ahead?"
"When the time comes, we should split the troops. Lhorne will guard Rhander while his squad casts spells, while we will flank and meet the enemy head-on." I replied. I played a few strategy games in my previous life, so I had some planning done.
"You are amazing, Shiro. I wonder what the other world looks like."
"They are boring. There are no races but humans, but they still make war."
"No different from here, huh?"
"At least we had a cute fox girl and elves!" I replied honestly while wagging my tail.
"Oh, please! I am not that cute!" She hugged me and went to bed. As she lulled to sleep, I released myself from her clutches, opened the bag of feystones, and started filling them. Though I worked hard, there were more than fifty stones here. I think we would only be able to serve ten at most tomorrow. I wonder if it would be enough to handle the next assault.
