Chapter 102 The Depth of the Tail
----------------------------------------
Mana song is when you cast multiple spells in concordance. For example, you took about twenty seconds to launch a fireball and cast an ice spear. The process would be drawing mana from feystones, molding it to form fireballs, and casting the spells. Then, you draw the mana again from feystones and then mold it again to form ice spears, then cast it. This took a lot of time.
However, with a technique called multi-chanting, you only need to draw mana from feystones once. And thus, it hastened the process by a quarter. Many graduates from elven magic academies, such as Rhander, can do this if given enough feystones.
However, Mana song is a step above that. You continue to draw mana, then mold it, then cast it. The beginning was the same, but it started to show the difference when using magic in multiple successions. It is like comparing to bucket relay to moving water and trying to move it with a bucket back and forth. It is a complicated technique; even the best mages could only chain two or three low-tiered spells. You could waste mana, or the spell could fail due o lack of concentration.
By the way, I could also do mana songs but only with fire spells. A blessed child could do mana song with their given attribute, but Edelweiss could do it even through feystones which showed her expertise with magic. Storing mana to feystones and then drawing them through the attribute ring will need about three more steps for my concentration.
The hydra began its mana as three of its remaining six heads stood up and waved around like it was dancing to the tune of its internal ballad. This time multiple rocks flew about surrounding it. Preventing us from getting near.
"Damn! Is it a magic type? I thought it was physical! Lhorne! Aim for the eyes on the head that look like it is dancing!" Alistar shouted. But Lhorne shook his head.
" The floating rocks are protecting it. I can't get a good aim!"
The boulders were then rained down on us. Many of such boulders missed by wide margins and splashed into the boiling water and splashed us with it, causing mild burns to some of us. Edelweiss retaliated by casting rock spears at its body. The head was too agile for her spells to hit accurately, so she preferred to aim straight into its heart. The dragon screeched in pain, but there were no significant injuries on its body.
Without delay, the dragon started its following spells, and dozens of boiling water balls swirled upon it. This time, its eye is now focused on Edelweiss. It recognized her now as the same as it. The waterball formed into water spears, all pointed toward her.
The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
"Icicle spears, Rock spears, Fire spears, Recovery, earth wall, and repeat!" Edelweiss shouted his mana song spells. Spears of ice began to form out of nowhere. And it met the water spears from the hydra head-on. But her spells were weaker than the boss monsters. Joseph was there with his shield and protected our rear allies. He swung his tower shield left and right and parried the water spears. His skin was burned by the boiling water splashed on him when it struck his shield, but he didn't flinch as he blocked the remaining spears with his expertise.
"Hurry up! Let's charge at it!" Alistar shouted. Although Edelweiss's spells were weaker than The dragon's. It was sufficient to clear Alistar's path. The group tailed him as he charged on with his axe. The hydra panicky countered him with its tail, but it was futile as Alistar's roared, and with his monstrous strength, He swung wide, and the spear-shaped tails were shattered.
Lily dashed forward in a quick motion and then slashed to its legs, trying to stumble it to the floor. Lhorne, Finally getting a clear view, shot an arrow toward it, and the arrow stood true to its eye. The creatures roared in pain as their mana dispersed into nothingness.
Mattheus and Nora charged in, taking advantage of the chance Lhorne had provided. She climbed on Mattheus's sword, and he threw her toward the dragon. Her scimitar swung down, opening a gash on its neck, decapitating another head. Late to the party is the dwarven group which charged in and rammed its hammer to the other legs that Lily missed and smashed its bones, finally toppling the towering giant.
"Alright! He is down! Time for round two!" Sig shouted. But as we charged in, the dragon summoned an earthen wall to block us. Alistar and Sig took a few seconds to break the flimsy wall with his battle axe, but as we broke through, the monster used a tactic we were familiar in this floor. It escaped into the depths of the lake. Edelweiss scored a few hits with her rock spears, but it ran nevertheless.
"What the fuck!" Sig cursed.
"Is it over?" Mattheus asked.
"No! Watch out! From there!" Edelweiss pointed to her left, and a giant splash of water struck out. The hydra came out with a roar. I saw mana gathered on one of its mouths, and as he leaned on the platform's edge, his breath attack came to us. A fire beam was coming towards her. I focused all my mana and made the most condensed fireball I could muster. The fireball turned blue from the heat and grew as large as a person.
"Firebomb!" I shouted. This new spell had no name, but I called anyway to gather my courage to fight the enormous beast before us.
The blue sphere struck the beam from its mouth. As they fought for dominance, they exploded with a loud bang, enveloping us all with smoke. Edelweiss cast fire spears, but they only flew towards nowhere in vain as the beast had fled once more. A few moments later, the smoke cleared out, and we tried to rendezvous on Edelweiss's position.
"Good job there, Lily. If that beam hit us straight on. I don't know what will happen." Alistar muttered.
"Can you do it again?"
"No. I used almost all of my mana on that one."
"We can only rely on Edelweiss now, huh? Edelweiss. You need to strike it down with her spells!"
"But how are we going to stop its breath?"
"be fast. And trust us. I will hold the shield." Alistar steeled his resolve.
The beast still stalked us from the depth, and we could not let our guard down.
