Chapter 24: Tailing away with a style

Chapter 24

----------------------------------------

“Shiro, can you do that fire dragon again?” Lily asked. Whoa! she wanted me to use that spell in the middle of the city?

“I cannot do any more spells after that for the day. Are you sure?” I asked her for confirmation. My mana stood at 90%, and it rose slowly.

“Yes...” Lily said while resolving herself. Her fist pumped up in anticipation.

“Let’s go to lord’s manor and blaze it to the ground!” Lily said. Her feeling was blazing hot as she was determined to save all the slaves here.

We ran toward Lily’s old home. The manor was luxurious, but for me, it was disgusting. The vast useless garden, the arrogant servants, the clear glass panes, the tiled roof, and a stone statue of Silvester as a symbol of arrogance filled me with disgust. It was just like in my previous life when I worked in a prestigious office in a twin-tower building, but it was rotten inside.

“Okay, here I go!” some guards started to notice us, but it was too late. These lazy soldiers were slacking so much that they didn’t see us until we were practically in front of the mansion’s front gate.

“Fire dragon!” I cast the spell, and the same flame erupted from us. The Fire dragon was reborn as it blazed everything in its sight.

“That spell was really eye-catching!” Mattheus smiled wryly. Lhorne gazed at the dragon with awe.

“I want to be Lily’s vassal!” Lhorne declared. The fire enraptured him as it exhaled its flame breath.

“Now is the time to retreat! Let’s run to the gate while people are in chaos.” Nora shouted. Her scream woke everyone as they were looking at the fire dragon in the distance. Lhorne guarded the rear as the tailfolk, and the elves were herded to the gate while Mattheus charged in front. The entire group fled the city without issue, as the path to the entrance was clear of soldiers.

“Okay. Let’s go!” I said as soldiers were running in panic.

“We are under attack!!”

“HELP!!”

“Capture her!” one captain shouted as he identified us as the culprit behind the attack, but no one listened to him in the chaos. We ran unimpeded to the gate and met up with the others.

“How long will the dragon last?” Lhorne asked. We were already a distance away, but the city still lit up like twilight in the distance.

“Around thirty minutes?” Lily parrotted my answer with a question mark. I don’t know how long it will last either, as Silvester cut it down in mere seconds the first time I cast it.

We formed an orderly line toward our bandit base camp. But soon we had an argument.

“So, why are we here again?” Lhorne asked while looking annoyed.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

“We need to rest. It is dark. Even walking here was unsafe.” Nora argued.

“I can see just fine. Let’s force our way at least until the border.” Lhorne said.

“Wait. If we went deeper, we might get ambushed. It was fine with just three people, but we have a whole thirty-five people here to protect.” Nora answered.

“I don’t like this place anymore….” Lily said. She remembered when she almost got killed a few distances away from here.

“Yeah… at least I wanted to find another base. Preferably far away. Looking at this place makes me remember those assholes.” Mattheus spat. The bandits that he considered friends betrayed him. He looked so disgusted that his face contorted in displeasure whenever he looked at the tree where our base was.

“Okay. Lhorne can keep watch while Mattheus, Nora, and I will guard the refugees!” Lily declared.

We then forced our way into the jungle with much difficulty. Nobody complained since the elves were eager to return to their homeland, and the tailfolk trusted Lily as she had a blessing.

“Fuck it. Those assholes goblins still followed us?” Mattheus cursed.

“No. These are different goblins. They use different magic systems!” Lhorne said. I parried a fireball with a fireball of my own. My mana has recovered a bit, but I don’t know if I can hold on. My head was getting dizzy as my mana dropped to 2%.

“Everyone, Roundup! Lhorne! Snipe the archers!”

“Damn it!” he fired another arrow, but more than 40 goblins surrounded us. We would not have had any problem if it was by ourselves, but they harassed our weakest personnel. Other tailfolk and elves had been wounded already.

“Lhorne! Kill the mages there, and they will flee!!” Nora pointed toward the tree, and lhorne understood immediately. He flanked it, and upon releasing his arrow, it flew and pierced the mage’s head. Lily continued to cut the goblins-soldiers to pieces as they came near while listening to my direction. I observed the surroundings and tried to make the most optimal decisions to save us all. These goblins are not a big deal to our current level, but they came at the most unfortunate times when we were at our weakest.

The goblins finally fled after we killed more than fifteen of them. Still, they wounded almost twenty of our civilians. Most are lightly injured, while there are five that warrant immediate treatment.

“It seems no sleep for us today. We have no choice. Nora, give them first aid. Lhorne and Lily will guard our surroundings. I will stand guard here.”

“Human will guard us?” Melthia’s father said while scorning us.

“We don’t have a choice! I know about your predisposition, okay? But lily and Lhorne have the best scouting skills. Do you want to die? I swear I will protect you, so please hide your racism for a while. I am on Lily and Lhorne’s side!” Mattheus shouted. Lhorne nodded to Melthia’s father, affirming his decisions, and Nora stepped down and tried to bandage their wounds,

“Lily, they went that way!”

Even in the dark night, I traced the fleeing goblins with my appraisal skill. The blue boxes tagged to the enemy helped me see their location.

After we killed another twenty of them, the sun finally rose. When we returned to the tent, Mattheus stood guard around the emergency base. Nora then came out relieved.

“We saved them. But they are unfit to walk. They need to be carried by other tailfolk.” Nora declared. “They need some further treatment and rest at the frontier village. Do you think they have proper medicine there?”

“Yes. You don’t need to worry about that. Madam Edelweiss is our direct superior. She is a lifesaver saint to our country. She will save them as long as we don’t bring her corpses.” Lhorne said assuredly. He was confident beyond doubt that Edelweiss would save them as soon as she saw them. I took a peek at her status, and her skill tale of life seemed to be able to do just that. I had a stupid thought that tale of life played with necromancy, but I was wrong. Tale of life is healing magic.

We continued our journey with the sun on our side.
