Chapter 33
----------------------------------------
“So, that’s fort Soleil….” Lily muttered. It was pretty grand. Stone wall with a height of more than 10 meters and moats in front of it.
“I thought the fort would be poorly fortified, like the previous city where there were barely any fences protecting it,” I muttered.
“The fortress is made from stone and so high, too,” Lily muttered.
“The dwarves made them.” Lhorne smiled wryly. We turned to them at once.
“This is an elven land, right? Why…?” Nora muttered.
“After the northlandgard incident, we formed an alliance, and the dwarves made these unruly stones,” Joseph commented.
“They might lack artistic taste, but the fortress was efficient. The artistic taste would be wasted on apes or zombies that would see them.” Lhorne commented, and it brightened the mood.
“I think I know why the elves are losing….” I whispered as we went into the fort. There were more elves than expected, but the number was still lower than tailfolk and dwarves.
“Hello. My name is Jona. Welcome to Fort Soleil.” A loli girl walked and welcomed us. A shota came while holding a massive hammer easily as tall as him.
“How is the defense going?” Edelweiss asked
“Lord Edelweiss. I am glad to meet you! We had a lot of injured during the zombie attack yesterday.” Jona exclaimed.
“Okay, bring me to the infirmary.” She replied.
The hell laid before us. Moans of the wounded soldiers crying in anguish were heard across the room. Over twenty elves and hundreds of other races were strewn on the floor. Edelweiss went into one of the patients and cast her healing magic.
“Purify, Cure.” white light shone from her hand. The black miasma from the wound dissipated, and the wound closed. Before the wound completely closed, she moved on to the next patient.
“Thank you, saint Edelweiss. I am fine now. You need to conserve your mana.” the man said. He was content as long as the black miasma was dispersed. What is that black miasma anyway?
Name: Adhern
Status: Cursed (Undeath Corruption)
Age: unknown
Level: 40
Cursed: a curse born from undeath corruption. The victim will have a decreased stat, and wounds will not heal.
“An attack is coming!!” Jona screamed when she heard the bell.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
“I will go!” Lily then unsheathe her sword
“Lhorne! Nora! Let’s go!” Lily shouted.
“Wait, we just arrived. We need to wait until tomorrow to get our respective post to defend.” Lhorne said. “Joseph. Is the emergency deployment protocol in effect? Which squad are we in?”
“Oi, Lhorne. You spoke out of your status there.” Another elf protested.
“Ah!” Lhorne quickly shut up while looking down as if he had made a significant mistake.
“So, Lord Lily, what should we do?” Rhander spoke to us.
“Uh…” as Lily wanted to say what was on her mind, I stopped her. This was that decorum thingy, right? Lhorne was underneath us, but he spoke as if he had given orders to us. That’s why others dissed him. But we didn’t know how the elves operate here. We needed Lhorne to guide us. He had experience as an elven soldier.
“Lily, follow Lhorne’s suggestion first. But ask him the reason. We don’t know anything here. Let’s trust Lhorne on this matter.”
“Lhorne, what should we do?”
“When The fort is attacked, we need to form up with the commanders and assign it as a reserve unit. Then we can put forth a suggestion, or when the commander deems it necessary, we can be posted in critical areas. We couldn’t just barge into the battlefield. That would disrupt our allies.” Lhorne said
“Okay. So, where is our position?” Lily asked. Lhorne then looked to Joseph. He soon ran to the commander and went back.
“Okay, our position is at sector 2 reserve troops.” He answered.
“Okay. Let’s go there!”
Sector two was a few blocks away from the main gate. Chills spread around my body as if the air suddenly went freezing. However, the air Is not cold. It is as if our life force were sucked away from our bodies. Shouts were heard as we readied our formation.
“Lily. This is undeath corruption. Don’t get too close.” Lhorne advised.
“How will we fight them if we can’t get close?”
“I mean, don’t stay in the zone for too long. If you do, the chill will get to your body sooner, and you will get cursed.”
The chill felt tenser, and then something banged on the door. Soldiers desperately fired arrows at something.
“I can’t see anything,” Lily commented.
“I haven’t fought undead either. I only read them from hearsay from my comrades.”
“I have fought them here before. I shall advise Lord Lily on the matter.” Joseph barged in. “So, these undead comes in various types. Zombies and skeletons with various weapons are the norms. They are slow but numerous. You don’t need to worry about them after you cut off their heads. But among the pack, there are some nasty ones.”
BOOM!
Something banged on the gate.
“That one?” Lhorne asked.
“Yes. It is either an undead Troll or Vargmuth. Vargmuth is the nasty one. You don’t want to see it.” Joseph replied grimly.
A roar then sounded out, and the soldiers on the wall shouted. “Shoot it! Shoot it!”
A flesh-colored bat face with a gorilla-like body came from the top of the wall. The fang was like an elephant tusk. It climbed the wall and scattered the soldiers on top of it. Lhorne prepared his arrow while I prepared a spell at once. The vamp gorilla then jumped down from the wall and charged at the soldiers with a roar. I blew its head off with two fire arrows.
“Wow. Excellent! But if I may advise you to save your mana, Lord Lily... This is but a mere vanguard.” Joseph replied. Five more Vargmuth climbed the walls. But as Joseph instructed, we held off our spell and watched from the back.
“I don’t like this. Let’s charge in!” Lily muttered.
“Lhorne and Joseph said we are on the reserve force. We should stay put until the command told us to go in.” I replied. I wonder if we can go on top of the wall. If I can get a view from the top, we might be able to do something with my fire dragon.
“Joseph, Are we okay?” Lily asked.
“Hmm… we should be okay. This one is bad, but not that bad… I have seen worse. And Miss Edelweiss is here. Any injury can be healed. Ah, that’s our cue! Let’s go in, everyone! We are now sent to the wall!” Joseph said. Jona came to us with a horse. She then ordered us to go to the wall as reinforcement after Vargmuth attacked it.
“Let’s go!!” Lily shouted, and we charged ahead to the said wall with Lhorne.
