Chapter 170 The end of the tails Part 2
----------------------------------------
The leakage was inside the basement of the government building. When we stabbed the stakes into the floor, the lines were cut off, and Edelweiss said there was a room below and another seal above it that we needed to break first. Our soldiers were from newer generations, and Edelweiss was a shut-in, so nobody knew that the Northlangard's central building had a basement.
"Whoa, I never knew we could build something like this..." Lily muttered as she descended the spiral stairway. The basement had white walls like everything else in this building, and it was polished with cement, leaving no gaps. Below it, purple seals were drawn, and as they absorbed the mana from the leakage, they emitted a purple glow.
"That's the seal. Let's break it, and Death will be much weaker!" Edelweiss said. "Hurry! Alistar's life depends on it."
"Hurry!"
"Behind you! And save Edelweiss!" I warned her, and she dodged according to my instructions. Black spears were shot, and as Lily dodged, she hugged Edelweiss, and they both fell down the stairs, trying to avoid the spears.
"Ouch!" Edelweiss moaned when she hit the ground. We landed just beside the seal. Our surroundings were gloomy, with only the seal lighting our way. Behind us, the one who had shot us with dark spears, Death, was hovering.
"Why is he here?" Lily exclaimed in surprise. Death was supposed to be held off by Alistar. They were just a few minutes delayed due to the fight with the undead. Had Alistar, with his herculean strength and armor, been defeated? Had Ghander, with his many clones, also been defeated? I could understand if they couldn't win against the immaterial Death. But I didn't think a few spells like black spears and zombie summoning could beat them either.
"Well, of course, I came here chasing you after dealing with the obstacles. What else? Did you think I would let you close the last leakage, which is the source of my strength?"
"Alistar? Where is Alistar?" Edelweiss panicked. Her eyes widened as she continued calling his name. Alistar never broke his promises, and seeing Death here could mean only one thing.
"Edelweiss, calm down! We still need to deal with him! Soldiers, rally!" Lily shouted as she picked up her sword and thrust it towards him.
"Lord Edelweiss, stay behind us for a bit." The soldiers stepped in front of Edelweiss in formation. Lily clenched her teeth as she dodged another arrow thrown at her. She knew I had no mana left, and swords didn't work against him.

"What should we do?"
We were checkmated. There was no way to kill Death, and we also couldn't seal the breaches without defending against him. There was only one way out. But if we retreated here, we would sacrifice all these regular soldiers inside this basement. Moreover, if Alistar and Ghander were dead, we wouldn't be able to assault this place again, and every mortal would perish.
"Lord Lily, give us a command." A soldier approached us and killed a zombie that had spawned nearby. Lily glanced at Edelweiss, but she was petrified, unable to move while whispering Alistar's name. Seeing that she was useless, the soldiers looked at the one next in command, Lily. However, Lily had no order to give, as we were just as confused about what to do next. Thus, Lily only told them to brace and defend Edelweiss.
I looked toward the seal and fired a small fireball at it. I didn't expect any reaction; however, Death overreacted. He quickly sent several dark spears to parry my shot. We both grinned as we now knew what must be done to defeat him.
Our clash began anew. Dark spears were cast one after another. My mana was exhausted, so I refrained from firing any spells toward the circle, but the soldiers understood my meaning. They prepared arrows, and their formation changed. Three of them disengaged while the other five still held their shields. Arrows were fired one after another, and everything was met with either an intentional sacrifice from the undead or dark spears parrying them.
Edelweiss also recovered faster than I thought. She stepped forward and raised her staff as she fired multiple ice arrows toward the circle, and now even Death was using his own body to shield the seal. The battle reached a stalemate. Even with such an enormous advantage, his defense was too tight. His summons were many, and his mana was abundant. We couldn't beat him.
"Lily! Edelweiss!" A sound of hope shone through like a light in the dark. Like sunshine peeking through a cloudy sky. Alistar emerged from the top of the stairs, huffing.
"Alistar!" Edelweiss shouted as she ran towards him, but her guards didn't allow her. The enemy was still in sight. It was their duty to protect her.
"I knew he wouldn't die so easily," I said.
Meanwhile, Alistar jumped from the stairs and landed right in front of us. His shield was battered, and his axe was chipped, but he was healthy. Then he screamed an order to all of us.
"Attack! Destroy the circle! Charge!" He started rushing towards the seal, and every skeleton that came before him was sent aside. Like a bull charging toward a matador, his charge was unstoppable. Even two vargmuth were helpless before him.
Death quickly took action. He positioned himself in front of Alistar, and a booming sound ensued as Alistar's superhuman strength clashed against Death's unbreakable barrier. This stopped Alistar in his tracks. However, Edelweiss, his lifelong partner, already knew this was all according to his plan. She immediately prepared her spells, and multiple ice arrows flew toward the seals.
The ice arrows reached the circle and struck a barrier around the seal. Like the wight's, the barrier around the circle cracked, and Edelweiss applied even greater pressure with an even bigger stone pillar. The pillar crashed into the barrier, and it shattered.
As it shattered, the purple seal was crushed, and the purple glow changed into motes of white light, reminiscent of a normal leyline leakage. Before us, Death stood, watching his ambition shatter into tiny pieces.
