B5, Chapter 11: Devil Possession

The onlookers were utterly astounded. They now look at Kairos flummoxed and with veneration. Such powerful ways are unseen and unheard of.

Aura may be infused into words that kill, but it is through overwhelming the opponent and frightening them to death.

Even the Aura of the King that can make lesser men obey can be resisted if the person tries hard enough.

What Kairos did is an absolute command that ignored the limits of Auras and had reached into the domain of gods.

His ‘God’s Tongue’ ability is really the tongue of God, and the words he uttered turns into reality.

Unfortunately, the next moment, the golden glow in Kairos’ eyes dimmed and he returned to normal.

Kairos felt the rush of power slip away from him, but there wasn’t any disappointment. Instead, his eyes are burning with excitement.

Although it was a fluke, he had activated God’s Tongue. He felt an urge to quickly go into close-door cultivation and reflect on the process.

By the time the burly man woke up, he had been untied and is seated next to Kairos.

He jumped up, looking around.

The knights had all been tied up while his people are mostly unharmed. The mercenaries he hired had sustained injuries, but they all survived.

Nearby, Relestia is helping by tending to their wounds and serving everyone some food and drinks; even the captured knights were not excluded. Everyone is taking glances at the princess, because even with her scarf, her beauty is barely hidden. Still, it was enough to prevent unnecessary provocations, besides everyone is too busy being injured.

The man thanked Kairos profusely after hearing everything that happened. When he found out that the young man was killed, his expressions became grim.

The young man came from a wealthy family that has connections with royalty.

“Sir, he had no intention of letting you off even if the debts were returned,” the mercenary he hired interjected.

The merchant furrowed his brows for a moment, then as if he made a decision, he stood up.

“I will bring my family to another city. Someplace that they couldn’t reach.

Kairos nodded. There’s no point in repaying the debt now that the young man is dead. The only way to protect his family will be to move.

“Why don’t you join us? We are heading towards the Dwarven Kingdoms, over there not even the royalty could reach you.”

Kairos had already studied the situation on Axis Mundi. The land is separated into three regions for the humans, the gnomes and dwarves, and the elves.

The humans and elves are often hunting each other, while the Gnome-Dwarf alliance is neutral. Instead, because they provide their invaluable skills to all who can pay, the other races formed a dependency on them.

Many merchants travel to and fro the dwarven forges and gnomish gardens. To prevent disruptions to their trade, there are strict regulations against killing.

If a murder happens, the Gnome-Dwarf Alliance will come down so heavily on the criminal that not even the Jarls can withstand their wrath.

If the merchant’s family relocate there, it will definitely be safer.

The man quickly sent the mercenaries back to fetch his children. He has seven sons and a daughter, to locate them and flee in time will be a challenge.

As the hired men left, Kairos secretly sent them aid. A few shadows left his side disappearing into the skies.

While they waited, Kairos noticed that Relestia had been busy.

He couldn’t feel the devil’s presence but something seemed odd that she had been so actively nursing the wounded.

When he walked over he saw a disturbing scene that caused his pupils to constrict. There was a pile of fingers are on the ground and the merchant’s servants are all bleeding profusely. The merchant’s wife is doing the cutting with a sharp pair of scissors but she and her victims did not appear to notice.

Kairos’ eyes flashed dangerously.

He is certain that this is the work of the devil although Relestia did not seem possessed.

The princess had a smile on her face as the group were chatting like nothing was happening.

He closed his eyes, calling forth his Veritable Sight and when he reopened them, they are already glowing.

Nothing can hide before his eyes in this state.

A dark cloud loomed above the group with wicked energies swirling violently.

“ENOUGH!”

The clouds dispersed like mist as a powerful Aura rolled out from Kairos and knocked out everyone.

“You don’t have to pretend anymore,” Kairos said coldly.

A single person stirred from the middle of the unconscious bodies, very slowly picking herself up.

The princess calmly adjusted her clothes and looked at Kairos with a smile, “What’s wrong boy?”

The one speaking now is definitely the devil.

This foul perverse creature feeds on evil. The young man Kairos previously killed must have generated enough dark energy that helped the devil regain some of its powers.

“How did you do it? How did you make them do all these?”

“Do you think…,” the devil had a gloating look, but before it finished, a searing bright light enveloped it. Kairos decided he had already heard enough.

“Salt of the earth, reverse defilement. Turn Undead! Utnr Dea Un’ Vah!”

“AHHHHHHHHHHH! You dare…”

“Cast out the impure, restore the defiled. Sanctification!”

“NOOOOOOO!”

“Sanctification!”

“IT BURNS!”

“Sanctification!”

“PLEASEEEE!”

Finally, the devil curled into a tiny ball and dashed back into the seal within Relestia, and the princess fell unconscious. Kairos quickly went forward and caught her, then brought her to the side to rest.

This time, he had managed to cast two different spells on the devil and greatly weakened it. The Turn Undead spell is extremely potent against evil, and can vanquish most dark creatures. The Sanctification spell is weaker, mainly used to purify curses and bless places, but its incantation is also shorter.

Furthermore, after learning Chantless Spellcasting, he managed to compact the entire incantation into a single word, further increasing the speed but at a drop in power.

Considering Kairos’ bloodline… eighteen generations of pig farmers with the exception of one pet shop owner… he already did his best.

However, his comprehension ability is top-notched. He already learned everything there is about Chantless Spellcasting and could even adjust it to his liking, but being about to use it is another thing.

Just like all combat skills in Gaia have different stages of mastery – from Initial to Perfected – Kairos had achieved Initial Mastery over Chantless Spellcasting.

If the other summoned heroes had his level of comprehension, they will have reached the second or third stage by now – Basic or Core Mastery – and will be able to instantly unleash spells at the cost of a drop in power.

Being struck by so many holy spells, the devil’s soul had been weakened once again but the energy it gathered from the previous wickedness had not been dispersed. This is just like an injured person who is well-fed and well-rested.

Kairos made a mental note to be aware of the darkness in people’s heart that might call forth the devil once again. Although souls are indestructible - even the devil’s - holy spells can grind it down until it becomes an impotent speck. At that time, it will be easy to separate it from Relestia.

However, if the devil managed to gather too much energy from the wicked people around, it will regenerate quickly and can completely take over Relestia’s body.

It is obvious that this time, making use of the energy it gathered from the revolting young man, it can influence the people around the princess to do evil deeds.

No doubt when the merchant’s wife wakes up and found out what she had done, the negative energy she unleash will be tremendous.

As the chosen champion to vanquish the devils, Kairos knows a thing or two about them.

Devils thrive on the wickedness of souls. Evil isn’t just malevolence but a twisted perversion of all that is right and true.

For these foul creatures, the greater the good of something, the bigger the potential of evil.

The young man’s soul had already Blacken long ago, and while it gave the devil some energy, it wasn’t much.

That was why it casted its dark influence on Relestia and the people around her. When innocent folk commits appealing acts, the resulting evil is far juicier.

Kairos quickly picked up the appendages and sorted them out. Fortunately the scissors was rather sharp and had made clean cuts. Sharing a silver of his life force, he managed to reattach them to their owners.

Kairos’ face turned pale instantly. Both his life force and Ki had dropped to a dangerous level. He felt the injuries he had been supressing reopen and a mouthful of blood surged up his throat.

He already figured out that everything was part of the devil’s plan. If Kairos wants to protect Relestia, he must heal the wounded and stop them from falling into depravity.

This isn’t an insidious plan but an open pitfall trap, yet Kairos have to jump right in if he wants to prevent it from absorbing dark energies.

As for why the devil got struck by the Turn Undead and Sanctification spells, it was merely a mistake; one with terrible cost.

It had wanted to gloat Kairos into despair, letting him know just how much it can do, yet the devil had sorely underestimated how swiftly the retaliation came.

Most people will pause to bargain, or at least let it finish its words.

Not Kairos.

He saw an opportunity and tried to bash the devil to death with it.

It was merciless… The devil nearly failed to escape.

Moments later, the men and women woke up.

They looked at each other with horrified expressions. The scissors had been cleaned and there are no signs of injuries on anyone’s fingers, but the memories of the hellish scene persisted.

The merchant’s wife remembered the thrill… the power to do whatever she wanted to these lesser humans, no… they were mere animals for her to butcher.

The servants as well remembered the immense pain and their lives completely in the hands of another, and yet it felt good.

The princess too was not excluded. She saw the people around her turning strange and became very frightened, but she did nothing. She smiled and pretended that there wasn’t anything wrong.

The devil hiding within the princess shrieked triumphantly as dark strands of energy appeared that it greedily sucked in.

As these negative thoughts attempted to overwhelm them and turn into deep seeded traumas or secret fetishes, a purifying light shrouded the people.

There was at once quiet peace. A comforting warmth, and an assurance they sorely needed. They no longer have to do anything to feel a thrill nor was there a frightful mire of emotions out of their control.

This was no spell of Kairos’.

People react differently when facing their weakness.

In her anxiety, the princess taken a path few would, but everyone that had taken this step was of the noblest spirit. Relestia picked up the courage to look away from herself, from all the things that could hurt her, and she saw that there are things which she can do for another.

The princess placed her hands together and took a shattering breath. And then, she sang.

A bright glow enveloped Relestia. Hugging her like she was a radiant angel on earth. Her long eyelashes fluttering as she poured out her heart with her voice.

“Soul healer…” Kairos whispered in awe. Covered in this light, even his wounds are showing signs of recovery.

After a while the purifying light dimmed, and the men and women still bathed in the song broke out in smiles. The previous nightmare faded away like a distant memory.

“Lady Relestia… She is the new maiden of light…,” someone gasped in adoration.

The eyes of everyone around grew wide and they also mouthed, “The maiden of light has returned!”
