Chapter 56
That’s right, I’m a werewolf now…
Rain mused inwardly as his lips curved into a wry smile.
This was so sudden… he never thought how or why he had become such a monster of legend. He can basically shift to a large wolf whenever he wanted, though the shifting takes quite a long time. And it hurts like hell. Like every part of your body, your bone shifting…it’s never a good experience. Though, Rain must admit, turning into a wolf was a fun and interesting power itself.
And most of all, it was now one of his incredibly OP trump cards, due to the fact that whenever he shifted into a Werewolf, he became larger than a normal Wolf, and also he was faster, stronger, more powerful, and more animal than he originally was.
In simple terms, when he was in his wolf form, he had already bypassed the Lv2 realm, and even much stronger than ordinary Lv2 human beings. Just that, there’s a troublesome effect, as it slowly changed him into someone else, influencing him, especially when he was in his Wolf form.
According to Sylphy or Zarda, the wolf inside of him, one that sometimes let out a voice in his subconscious was the true him without any kind of restrictions, such as moral, principle, or reason. It was him in an animalistic manner, so to speak. Which is really hard to believe, and somewhat awkward to know.
It has been three days since he had woken up from that hellish awakening. And when he woke, everything is never the same as before. His perception of the world change and his power skyrocketed as well. As if some sort of a limiter has been broken within him. Now, all his physical status entered the D rank and some even reach the C rank, beyond his original status.
His strength and speed increased so much, and his senses were beyond what he had before. Sharper. Stronger.
The best part, he can turn into a wolf.
[Wolf Shift] was another skill appearing alongside his other Unique Skills. And what made it even more confusing, he can shift anytime he wanted.
As for how or why Rain didn’t know. Zarda and the others guess that he had some lineage with the Wolves, Werebeasts. And that he just didn’t know of it because he had lost his memories—but sadly, he knows for himself that he did not. His memories are intact as ever, and he had never known he had such power in the past. More like, do Werewolves even truly existed on Earth?
This makes Rain even more doubtful and confused.
Zarda watched Rain and her eyes clouded with concern.
“Rain?”
Rain shook his head with a bitter smile; “I’m just a bit confused… how did it become like this? How did I become a werewolf?”
“Well, although this might be new to you, it was not actually as confusing as you make it out to be. Trust me.” Zarda smiled wryly.
“…??”
“You always thought you are a human, but actually it’s not something surprising. Not at all. For countless years, mortals, humans as you call them, they had changed differently from what they were before.”
Zarda came over and placed a hot, still steaming medicinal tea-like drink on the table in front of him.
“…There are no longer pure humans, so to speak,”
Well, that’s what I thought at first before I met you… but Zarda didn’t say that as she was still bewildered like the others of Rain’s true identity. Everything about him seemed to be covered by a veil of mystery that they just couldn’t understand or unveil. And this makes them curious about him. Very curious.
“What do you mean? There are no humans in this world?”
“That’s not what I meant. There is, but they are not…well, what can I say, pure-blood humans anymore. According to many ancient texts left behind by our ancestors, to protect the Humans who were loved by God against many races that had appeared a long, long, time ago in this world. He let humans mated with different creatures, beings. And most children from those unions were mortals, but they now retained some latent powers of the creatures humans mated with. Their parents. This made them become stronger and able to use magic and many magical skills. Though weak compared to natural magical beings, they have their own potentials unearthed. And this is where your powers came from…”
Though this is just a theory, Zarda believed and never doubted that Rain was a Pure-blood Human.
An extinct race so to speak, due to how pure his blood was. Even now, him becoming a werewolf, his blood undergone mutation—unlike true werewolves, or magical wolves capable of shifting into humans, it’s much denser and rich in magical power, much more addicting so to speak.
Zarda had tasted his blood before, as some sort of test if the pure blood he had, contained some differences from before due to his awakening, and shapeshifting. After all, it was the most important aspect of their survival. And if it suddenly changed, and lost its pureness, they would have a very big problem.
But the outcome was beyond what she expected. He had retained his pureness, but even more incredible than before, it was much richer in magic energy, though not the amount but density. It’s as if, unlike his human ancestry, he had become a magical being himself. He’s still a human, but clearly, beyond normal human being—something like evolution had undergone and changed him into something else entirely.
Although he can shift into a wolf, it didn’t turn him into a pure Werewolf. And instead, it apparently turned into some kind of power, or ability, or a gift.
His blood remaining pure, but now richer in magical power.
If Gods existed in this world, then surely, Rain was certainly not less inferior to them—or at least, that’s what Threia had concluded. Although Rain was a pure-blood human, his blood contains thick and dense magical power, so refined it almost rivaling that of a true Magical race, like a Lamian.
… And to a Wolf Clan, he’s none other than an Alpha-kind of existence.
Much more special than an ordinary Alpha, in fact.
Zarda believed what Threia said. Rain was an extinct race of pureblood humans, but with the power of the Wolf Mark left in his soul, or perhaps something else, either way, it mutated him. Perhaps this is also an after-effect of the seal done to his body.
Corrosion and Reconstruction—or as what Sarete had concluded. The seal corroded his body, little by little as he grows up. But this, Wolf Mark or other powers whatsoever existing in his body, was keeping him alive. And over the years, the wolf mark had integrated into his core, or soul to protect him, and save him from the corrosion of the seal.
But there are too many contrasting aspects to this theory and so, she could only treat it as an assumption for now. And what’s more, if Rain knows of his bewildering identity, he might start to wonder or become interested in who he was, and set out to look for the truth of who he truly is. And it’s not something they cannot allow…she cannot allow it happening under her watch. Hence, she lied.
Well, at least, left out important things.
“…well, like what I mentioned, you might have possessed the power of the wolf within you, from your ancestors a long time ago. And because the Magic Awakening Stone you had used was made for our race, it completely differs from what humans used, as ours not only awaken magic power but also the hidden blood within us. This is much more important to us than be able to use magic. Because to us Lamians, the denser our blood was, the more power we could obtain…”
Zarda said as she walks over.
She lied, but some of it was true. Though, Zarda was certain that Rain was a pure-blood, so even if he uses the Tribe’s Magic Awakening Stone, there would be nothing that would occur to him. This is was also why she didn’t have any worries about letting him use their Magic Awakening Stone, despite its specific usage. Because she was certain that Rain was a Pure-blood Human… an extinct race. One that is known as loved by the Gods. Untainted. A pure soul.
But who would have known there would be an accident…?
To think he was far simpler than he let on the surface.
Rain who was listening solemnly felt a small pressure on his shoulder and turned at her. Zarda smiled comfortingly and petted his head.
It makes sense…
Rain mused.
I think good ‘ol Darwin will be happy with her words.
“So, you think that within my blood is the blood of the werewolf or at least a Wolf-type DNA?”
Zarda nodded her head.
“I don’t know what you mean by DNA, but indeed you have the blood of the Werewolf,” she lied. “…I told you, it’s not a surprising matter. There were many humans who had awakened unique abilities that were almost similar to specific monsters. Even comparable to unique skills that we Lamians use. Though, their blood is not as dense as we have, hence their appearance never changes, and remained normal mortals. Nevertheless, they shared the same bloodline with us. They always call it Gifts or Blessings. Of course, completely different from God’s Blessings—the latter tends to be unique and more powerful. Thus, most humans often call it; [Special Skills], or Bloodline Ability.”
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
“I just wanted Magic, but to think I gained more than I bargained for,”
Rain smiled wryly, not knowing if he should be happy about it or not.
Zarda laughed sweetly, “Well, don’t you think this is best as well. You cannot only use magic now but also gained more power,”
Rain shrugged.
“But the transformation hurts…and it always makes my body sore after returning to my human form.”
“You’ll get used to it. Give it time,” she said with a grin. “The problem now is your magic affinity…” when she said that, her expression turned somewhat unnatural. “Truthfully, I haven’t seen anything like that before…but I think it must have been one of the variants- Lightning or Storm.”
But the color of lightning is golden… not blue.
In this world, due to not knowing any scientific explanation, those who possess the power affinity of Lightning regarded the lightning in the sky as a reference. Hence, most of their power came out as golden. Not bluish, like electricity…most magic was a reflection of what the user understands, or imagined after witnessing a natural phenomenon.
Basically, they are restricted by what they saw, hear, or witness personally, which was used as the reference of their power.
As for Storm—this kind of power can only be found in Legends and Myths. And even if there was in this era, they are only possessed uniquely by Dragons…not humans, not even Monsters like us.
Storm, is, after all, a Chaos-type power.
A power that is only possessed by a higher-level of existence…for Rain to be able to possess it would be incredibly suspicious.
Zarda thought as she watched Rain frowning, perhaps thinking of his newly obtained powers.
However, if he truly had the Storm-type power of Chaos—
I would not be able to see him as a mere human anymore…
Ignorant of Zarda’s worries, Rain had a somewhat hard-to-understand expression as he looked at his hand, which was now crackling in pale-bluish electric sparks. Actually, unlike Zarda and the others, he knows what his ability is—and it’s not just mere Lightning like Zarda had thought.
[Weather Magic]
That’s right, he can control the weather over a certain range just like a certain white-haired mutant. But because of how hard and difficult it is to control, Rain was scared of doing any damage to the tribe and he cannot display all its power. He doesn't dare to.
In fact, he had tried once before. When Zarda had let him display what he can do, lightning struck the village and destroying some of the houses, much to his and the dismay of the others. Because of that, Rain was somewhat scared of using his newfound powers and can only seal the majority of them.
Most weather phenomenon he can create was Lightning Storm, wind storm, fog, or rain- and for some unknown reason, it seemed to have some connections with his emotions. Just like one time, when he was down and sad, which he did, after knowing his ridiculous magic affinity, the rain suddenly appeared, washing over the tribe. When he calmed down, with Lafitte’s help and comfort, the skies went clear the next hour. But of course, it only happens a few times. It's not clear.
However, if it's not, it’s just too much of a coincidence, said Sylphy. Though the desolate cave has erratic and unpredictable weather, it's not to the point that it would suddenly rain and sunny an hour after. Well, there are still a lot of things he needs to discover and learn about his magic.
Rain confided to Zarda about his true powers, wanting to ask for some kind of help, support, or anything that can use as his reference. However, this only made Zarda even more astonished.
“Well, what can I say…you’ve truly earned your spot among the monsters I know, Rain,”
Zarda who heard about Rain’s understanding of his power smiled wryly and a helpless expression appeared on her face.
To think it’s really a Storm-type power… perhaps this would be the first in history that a human possesses the power to destroy the world? Just this alone, made him qualified to enter the ranks of Dragons. Basing on this power, it's difficult to imagine what he would become in the future…
Even Zarda felt horror for what would Rain could become the moment he matured.
An ability to controlling the Weather- although most people might perhaps not be able to understand what kind of implications it has, Zarda could. His power is basically a disaster in nutshell. And it can destroy a country or two if done right, without any problem. Even an entire continent would be at his mercy.
It’s a very dangerous power.
It’s the power that made, most races fearful of Dragons, because of the power that can call storms and disaster at will.
And to think Rain would have it…!
This power had made him completely detached from human beings.
Is this why someone had tried to kill Rain? Or at least, sealed his power?
Is this the true blessing that Rain’s God Parent; the Goddess Atria had bestowed to him? What is she trying to do? Why would a God like her bestow the power of Chaos to a mere Human? If the followers of the God of Light and the other Gods knows about this, Rain would be in great trouble!
He basically is a Mortal with the power of a God!
Zarda felt another huge headache coming to her. And her heart couldn’t help but fall. However, after a few minutes of thinking, she could only let out a sigh. For now, since she can’t basically do anything about it, she can only brace herself for the future. In any case, there are also incredible uses as well. And in this place, where the weather is erratic and unpredictable, being able to control the weather would surely make the life of the tribe so much better than before.
Not knowing the complicated feelings of the medusa in front of him, Rain let out a sigh.
“It would have been better if it’s just normal magic. I can live with it, and I can even experiment with it with all I have, without you know, causing trouble,”
Zarda's expression softened.
“Well, Magic reflects one’s nature… and also, most often related to the Gods who had been watching you over. You can’t choose what you have, and can only brace for what you get. Sometimes, we just couldn't understand what the Gods are thinking, or doing on a whim. They do things in an unpredictable manner. And they just watch at you, laugh at you. Well, they do have nasty characters so you might as well just ignore it, and embrace what you have. In any case, magic is not really something important. You can use it as you wanted, but I think you prefer fighting without it.”
Zarda consoled him with those words, which Rain could only agree. He would need a long time to get used to his magic, and he would need a really good and vast place for it, far away from the village if possible.
The Medusa stared at Rain with a gentle expression and said. “Just like Drova and Lafetti, they have good potential in magic, but they prefer fighting with swords…and I think you are like them.”
“Well, yeah… moving one’s body is much better than using easily-to-cause friendly-fire magic. Well, I guess it’s too late to say anything now,”
Zarda chuckled in amusement.
“You’ll do better. I had a hard time controlling my magic once as well. It went to the point that I basically freeze everything I touch, and I was sent into isolation for a while. My magic power is greater than average and thus, so easy to lose control. I thought of it once as a curse, you see… according to our history, our Ancestor had also been ostracized and regarded as a dreadful monster because of her power to make everything she stared into a stone.”
“Yeah, that sucks,”
Rain commented as he took a sip of his hot medicine drink. He doesn’t know which he thinks really sucks- a loss of control on your power, or the taste of the medicine he was drinking. Which tasted like rotten lettuce by the way. But beggars can’t be choosers; it was made especially for him.
It has a great calming effect, which he really needs right now, for this massive information—rather, power overload. He hated to lose control of his emotions, and well, change the weather that would surely disturb the others. A storm is a troublesome event when it was just a clear, beautiful sky.
Zarda nodded with a wry smile.
“I thought I would live the same as her. But I didn’t give up and tried to control my power…and as you can see, I got used to it, and now it doesn’t really affect me anymore.”
“And you think I could do it as well?”
Isolation is the last thing he should worry about. His magic not only affects him but those around him as well. He basically is a very dangerous monster at the moment…a walking time bomb.
“You could…if it’s you, it would be easy.”
Zarda said with a confident expression. It somehow calms him down and made him feel grateful and happy she was there.
“...And besides, with you being a Werewolf now, I think your strength increased by several folds, your magic doesn’t matter at all.”
“Yeah, I totally obtained bizarre and completely unexpected powers at the same time. I wonder what it could make me become…”
Rain tilted his head in wonder. There’s already [Predation] that had torn him apart from humans. But now, he had truly had become something different—A Werewolf.
His heart raced. His inner wolf trembled, ecstatic somehow. And although it felt strange, Rain can feel it, his heart beating wildly and a loud howl resounded inside his mind, which even Sylphy was not hearing, only him. Whether it was his imagination or not, it felt completely real.
But what made it worse, is that Rain felt the urge to transform.
Damn. He can’t let it do what he wants, or else, it would become its thing, and transforming him into a wolf anytime it wanted, and with him saying good-bye to control.
According to Sylphy, and even Zarda and Threia, Werewolves in this world have many restrictions. However, Rain was special, unlike the true ones he doesn’t have any restrictions. Perhaps this was what brought his Pureblood status into effect- that unlike other Werewolves with many different ancestries within them, it became a natural seal.
But Rain was a pureblood, just like how other colors can easily taint a pure white sheet, the Werewolf-blood within him became too pure as well and he turned into something special—almost without any limits. Or also perhaps, because of other factors within him, including the seal, or just his true potential, which were still completely unknown to them, he became something unique.
Nevertheless, Rain’s transformation can easily be triggered through strong emotions just like his magic. And this makes things even harder for him, double trouble if ever he loses control. Fortunately, Rain has always been calm and steady. And he was not so easily angered, his patience too long, it’s hard to believe. Not to mention, there was Sylphy in his mind that always calms him down when his emotion reaches a certain degree.
Rain groaned softly, his breathing fast as he fought harder than he’d ever fought before to gain control of his emotions. He knew what would happen if he lost the battle and he would become a wolf. A rabid wolf to be exact. He heard how he almost bite Lafetti the night before he became one. Fortunately, his body at that time was still undergoing the change, sore and heavy, and with the calming effect of the medicine, he fell unconscious.
Zarda furrowed his brows upon seeing Rain’s pained expression that seemed to be enduring something. With her keen eyes, she could see that his muscle was flexed and stiffen, and all the hair on his body was standing erect. He was transforming…and he was fighting against it. That would be harsh…
Zarda came over and suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Calm yourself,” she said with a soft whisper.
“I know nothing about Shape-shifters, but I had seen some. Calm yourself, breathe deeply, and don’t fight it. Follow the current. I heard that the more you fight against it, the more it will transform you,”
Rain was startled by the sudden embrace of the medusa. However, her familiar scent calmed his nerves and he felt relaxing.
I want more… something inside of him cried out. And he did. Rain moved his arms around her waist and urges her closer. Zarda didn’t repel and instead let herself be pulled towards him and she hugged him tightly, all while stroking his back with another hand, as if wanting to calm him down.
“Deep breathe, and try to think of all your emotions pouring out of you like water,” she said as she continued massaging his back with her gentle hands. Rain obeyed, and closed his eyes, and sighed as some of the tension left. He did as he told her and felt some of the emotion wash away.
Her familiar and calming scent…with a soft smile, he tightened his grip around her. However, suddenly, felt twinges in his heart, pleasant little bursts of lust that passed quickly, but this—this was a strong surge that swept over his entire body and clung to him, refusing to let go.
This was a desire that went past the physical.
It was seeping into his soul.
