Volume 3 - Chapter 29: A town in the pit

Bonifacius, Bromy and Revenberry (still passed out) stood outside the gates to Levelgreen, hiding in a nearby bush.

"We know not what to expect, perhaps we may be forced to fight our way inside..." said Bonifacius looking tense.

"Perhaps..." Bromy replied holding his scalpel out.

"Hey, bird-brains, are you up?" asked Bromy.

"I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE!" Revenberry finally exploded beating on Bromy's back with closed fists.

"AH! YOU..." he turned around with his scalpel, this seemingly brought her back to her senses.

"Y-you wouldn't hit a lady, would you?"

"No, I would stab one though..." he threatened.

"O-ok... noted..." she replied taking a step back.

He let out an irritated sighed and reached into his sleeve before pulling out a dark-wood half-staff, like a mix between a wand and a staff.

It had a large purple gem shaped like a rabbit for some reason.

"This is the biggest thing I could smuggle out of the armoury, it should be of some use," he explained.

Revenberry caught the staff in mid-air.

"Aw, you smuggled this out for me? Could it be that Bromy has a conscience?" she asked playfully.

"I will use your spine as a baseball bat if you do not leave me alone!" he threatened.

"C-can I help you, folks?" asked the large man in charge of the town of Levelgreen.

The noise must have brought him here.

"..."

"..."

"..."

Bonifacius was the first to speak up, with the confidence of a king he exclaimed:

"We have come to liberate your town from the tyranny of the rogue illusionist!" Bonifacius exclaimed.

"Oh, Eric? He's already been dealt with." replied the man.

Once again the four fell silent.

"Are you the one in charge of this town?" asked Bromy.

"Right, you can call me Ed, my in-game name is... not that great... so Ed will do." the large man explained.

The man led them into the town, the roads were cleaned up and the "training pit" was converted into an animal pen.

Slowly the homes were being fixed, most having some sort of improvised doors.

"This place... looks messy," Bromy said looking around.

"I know, we've only gotten around to fixing it up recently, thanks to the three saviours of this town!" Ed explained.

"Saviours?" asked Bonifacius.

They stepped into the cleanest of the homes, it was raised of the ground slightly and was missing most of the furniture.

"Yes! The pale woman wielding a dagger, a dark-skinned man with a staff and the blond cat-eared guy with the gold sword."

Bromy and Bonifacius exchanged a knowing look.

"Alex!?" Revenberry exclaimed causing both Bonifacius and Bromy to face-palm.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"That's what the other two called him," Ed replied.

Bromy let out a sigh.

"There goes the idea of keep this on the down-low..." he thought.

"Wait, are you three friends of the saviours?" Ed inquired.

"This dagger woman..." Bromy began.

"What was the name of this pale rogue?" asked Bonifacius.

"Why does he talk like that?" asked Ed looking over to Bromy.

"He's roleplaying," they explained.

"I see, well her name was... ehhh..." he scratched his balding head.

"I believe it was JaneWillStab?" the man replied.

Bonfifacus let out a sigh.

"Oh well... I thought it might have been-" he was smacked over the head by Bromy.

"It is him, dumbass."

"It is? But he said this person's name is JaneWillStab." Bonifacius exclaimed.

"Am I the only person who sees the similarity between JohnWillStab, JohnWillNotStab and JaneWillStab?" Bromy asked defeated.

"I don't see how they're related," replied Revenberry.

"Yes, I don't see any similarity..." Ed agreed.

Bromy let out a sigh and lay down on the ground, "I died twice today and now everyone is stupid..." he mumbled before lighting a cigarette.

The dry floorboard below him feeling surprisingly nice.

"Anyway, what do you guys plan to do now?" asked Ed.

"We are still planning to retrieve Eric and return him to the jGuardian base," he explained.

"The jGuardians? Fascinating..." Ed remarked twirling his moustache,

"Yeah, we're Log Frog-" they began but were cut off by Revenberry.

"L.F.T.O - they're the L.F.T.O!" she exclaimed sparing them the embarrassment.

"The L.F.T.O?" asked Ed.

"Y-yes..." Bonifacius replied uncertainly.

"We're a part of the jGuardians... consider us like... the special forces!" Bromy exclaimed.

"I do not think that is how that witch Curstl described our job!" Bonifacius thought glaring at Bromy.

"Oh! That sound cool!" exclaimed Ed.

"I know right!?" Bromy laughed.

He sat up and turned to face Ed.

"So, could you bring Eric to us?" he asked.

"We'd like to get going as soon a possible."

"Oh... Eric... the problem with that is... he escaped..." Ed explained.

"Escaped?!" demanded Bromy.

"Well, we didn't want to kill the poor fool, since all he did was run around and scream nonsense about bees we decided to just let him run around."

"Last night he just... left." he shrugged,

"You might still be able to follow him." he continued.

"Guess we failed our first mission already." Bromy sighed.

"Well, the thing is, as he left he stole a whole load of our herbs, there's a trail of flowers leading off into the distance, you may be able to follow them."

"A trail... that's something..." Bromy said finishing off his cigarette.

"We happen to have someone in the town with the tracker skill..." Ed began.

"The tracker skill? Guess he's a decent hunter..." Bromy assumed.

"Indeed, it looks like people with certain skills on earth are more likely to develop a similar skill in-game," Ed explained.

"He's only level thirteen, you shouldn't be able to develop skills like tracking without days of grinding," Bromy noted.

"The problem is, because of what went on at the town recently, his death penalty is extremely high..."

"There is no way he'd survive another death," Ed said breathing a deep sigh, he didn't feel it necessary to mention that he was responsible for bringing the death penalty that high, but it still weighed down on his conscience.

"I understand..." Bonifacius replied.

"We will not bring danger to someone in such a way," Bonifacius said before standing up.

"Yeah." Bromy agreed.

"Could you show us where the trail starts?" asked Bromy looking at Ed who gave him a quiet nod.

As soon as they stepped out of the building, Bonifacius was greeted with a frog-man, or rather a frog-woman standing with their back pressed up against the back of the house they were in.

She had long blond hair and a white hood with rabbit ears.

A long black scarf and white cloak.

"Curstl wanted me to check your progress." replied the rabbit-frog in mono-tone.

At first, Bromy and Bonifacius were somewhat surprised by the frog-person, but they quickly realised this was a messenger from the jGuardians.

"Erm... we have just reached the town of Levelgreen, Eric escaped so we shall follow his trail, it would also appear Alex was in this town recently!" Bonifacius reported.

"Right, I was also meant to deliver these to you." she handed Bromy and Bonifacius little metallic badges that read "jGuardian" with "L.F.T.O" written below.

The badge was gold in colour.

"Nice! Now about the uniforms?" Bromy asked placing the badge in his pocket.

"We found a tailor and a leather-worker, Curstl says the uniform should be done in the next few days." replied the frog-rabbit.

"That's all." with that the frog-rabbit disappeared in a small puff of smoke.

Everyone looked around for where she went but they couldn't find a single trace of her.

"Is it just me or did the smoke kind of smell like cherries?" asked Bromy.

"Smelled like smoke to me." Revenberry shrugged.

"Indeed, is this another one of thy John and Jane situations?" asked Bonifacius looking concerned.

Bromy let out a peaceful smile.

"I will fucking stab them in their sleep..."

Ed brought the group to where the trail started, a few white-pettled flowers lay in the green grass.

"This is it, I suggest you hurry before the wind blows the flowers away," Ed advised.

"Yes, I thank you for your help!" Bonifacius exclaimed before turning to the flower-trail and starting to follow it.

"Wait up! I can help you guys out!" a fish-person ran up behind them, he was an earth-mage by class but wore generic clothes, not unlike that of a hunter.

"Hm?" Bonifacius turned to the Fishman.

"This is the one I told you about, the tracker perk person, MrFinland," Ed explained.

"MrFinland?" asked Bromy.

"It's short for Mister Fish On Land," explained MrFinland.

"Plus 'fin' which is like a fish thing," he added.

"...right..." Bromy turned to the flower trail and began walking.

"Wait! I want to help you guys! I can't stand the thought that Eric is out there living the life of a free man after what he has done!" exclaimed MrFinland.

"Look, we appreciate your dedication, but you will die," Bromy explained.

"It's not like I'd survive all that long in a fantasy world with essentially one life!" he exclaimed.

"..." Bromy couldn't argue with that, he could have said "no, look, you had one life back on earth? right?" but that wasn't a fair comparison, Bromy died twice today alone, and that was just him screwing around.

"Look, you're a grown man, I can't force you to stay." Bromy began.

"But we will find Eric."

"Indeed, thou should think of a plan to earn more experience! If thou had enough XP not to die permanently it means thou still has a reasonable chance of surviving!" Bonifacius exclaimed.

"I've made my mind up! If I die then I can try and take that bastard, Eric, down with me!" he exclaimed.

"..."

Bonifacius looked to Bromy and Bromy looked to Revenberry who looked back at Bonifacius.

"What now?!"
