Volume 3 - Chapter 18: Footprints in the mud

As the night drew nearer and the clouds blocked out the moon, JohnWillStab sat under a makeshift tent outside the gates of the town, his fire still hot enough so as not to be extinguished by the relatively light rain.

"Man, I wonder if there are more places like this around the world?" he thought.

He was tossing his dagger at a nearby tree, slowly increasing his perception and weapon skill.

"When I looked at the fat guy's stats, his strength stat was insane... he had to spend ages working out and fighting monsters to get it that high."

"Why don't I ask him about it..." thought JohnWillStab smiling.

Alex was fast asleep, he was excited to fall asleep in a bed for a change, but he didn't have the heart to deprive the villagers of comfortable sleep, so he slept on the floor, it still beat sleeping on the cold ground.

Jordan walked through the rain, he pulled his cloak over his head and went off to see JohnWillStab, he had a feeling John wouldn't be asleep, he lit a cigarette.

That was when he saw the massive footprints in the deep mud forming from the rain, they led out of the town.

Concerned, Jordan made his way down towards where the fat man was chained.

When he made his way to the wall he saw the walls smashed and the broken chains laying on the ground.

"Shit!" he cursed under his breath as he turned to where the footsteps led.

He followed the footprints to the location of the large man, seeing him pummeling JohnWillStab's limp body.

"Splat"

"Splash"

"Splat"

"Squelch"

"Crack"

He stood up, wiping his face with his wrist.

"Ha!" the man laughed.

"I win!" he roared.

"You will not destroy my colony!" he added.

"What the fuck are you doing?!" Jordan demanded, the man jumped a little as he turned around and looked at Jordan.

"Ah... good... I was going to get revenge on you and the blond one..." said the fat man, cracking his knuckles and approaching Jordan.

Jordan looked to the bloodied body of JohnWillStab, it wasn't a matter of broken bones or bruises, John was dead.

"Is this why he chose to stay outside the town? No... he couldn't have predicted the man's escape... unless..."

Jordan remembered JohnWillStab checked the man's stats, he must have known about his ridiculous strength stat, something Jordan could feel during the fight, despite never being hit.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"He knew the bastard would break the chains and go after us!" he realised.

The fat man walked up to Jordan who was ready to char him with his staff as a flame rose from its tip.

"Are you sure you want to use your fire?" laughed the man tossing a sack to Jordan's feet.

Jordan looked at the bloody sack but didn't make a move for it.

"Go ahead, wizard, have a look inside, I'll wait." laughed the man.

Jordan looked inside, the bag was filled with nothing but heads, all belonging to the fat man.

"What did you do?" Jordan demanded.

"I took my own life over and over again, I'm at level one... such a shame, I only have twenty XP left... and my new death penalty is over-thirty thousand... my stats didn't change though..." the man said faking-sadness.

Jordan looked to the man who drew closer.

"Go ahead, wizard... kill me."

He took a step forward.

"It won't be difficult with your fire."

Another step.

"If you don't I'll kill you and your friends over and over and over until there's nothing left of you three."

Another step.

He was now directly above him, his breath visible in cold air.

"I didn't think you could do it." the man said making a swing at Jordan, he dodged the attack with ease, JohnWillStab's blood, which still covered the man's fist spraying on Jordan, dirtying his white robes.

"Go on, keep dodging!"

He made another swing, then another, then another.

Jordan avoided each one effortlessly, each successful dodge angered the man.

"If you don't quit jumping around, I'll get angry!" bellowed the man.

"I can't kill him..."

He dodged another jab from the left.

"I can't really murder someone..."

Another dodge.

"It doesn't matter if he's wearing a shirt and jeans or knight armour, it's still a person!"

The fat man panted.

"You know... what..." he said exhausted.

"Why don't I... make it easier... for you..." he walked over to JohnWillStab's body, grabbing his iron dagger and placing it to his neck.

If you dodge a single hit I will burry this in my neck and drop dead.

"My blood will be on your disgusting hands!" he cried out as he walked up to Jordan slowly.

He pulled his fist back and punched Jordan in the shoulder, he deliberately picked a non-vital spot.

His entire limb bent backwards by over one-eighty degrees, a cry of pain coming from Jordan before he saw the fat man dig the blade into his neck ever so slightly.

"Quiet now, I'll deal with your other friend personally."

"Personally? Isn't he dealing with me per-" he was cut off by a kick to his leg, his bone sticking out as a result of the powerful hit.

"You really aren't going to resist?! Idiot!" he walked up to Jordan and placed his two hands on his shoulders before burying his knee in Jordan so hard his torso snapped in two releasing a shower of blood and guts onto the muddy ground.

The man tossed the blade aside.

"Congratulations, you get to die with some silly ideals, let's see how you go about things when you respawn... How many times can you pull off your heroism..."

Meanwhile, in the town, Eric sat, looking at the rain through one of the windows, the town was lit by fires which were reflected in the puddles.

"Peaceful isn't it?" Alex asked.

Eric spun around seeing Alex standing there, stretching.

"Blond guy!?"

"It's Alex." he reminded him.

Alex sat and looked out a different window.

"I always found rain relaxing." Alex began.

"Y-yeah? Me too..." Eric looked outside.

"It's the sound that really does it for, masks everything going on," he exclaimed.

"What do you mean?" asked Eric hesitantly.

Alex turned to face him, crossing his arms behind his back and resting his back against the wall.

"Like, if someone was beating the crap out of someone else, you couldn't hear it." Alex continued.

"...you weren't sleeping..." Eric said, the look on his face turning grim.

"Oh, I was." Alex began.

"But I had a sudden nightmare, weird since I don't usually get those." he continued.

"And a little metallic demon-birdie told me they sense you using illusion magic this whole time." Alex grinned.

"Insane, isn't it?" Alex laughed again.

"..." Eric didn't reply, he reached into his coat and pulled out a dagger before running at Alex who didn't even move before reciting the first line from the B*e movie.

"According to all known laws of aviation..."

As soon as Alex made it past the word "According" Eric fell to the floor screeching in horror, the blade flying out of his hand and landing on the ground.

"Release the spell, or I'll continue!"

"HOW DID YOU FIND OUT!?" Eric demanded, still keeping his eyes clenched.

"When we first saw the fatass, he told us to 'Buzz off'..." Alex began.

"Besides, why would he kill and torment all magic users but leave you alone?"

"At first we thought it was just a matter of him fearing being attacked... but he left the healers alone, some of which druids... and you were left alone."

"It's almost as if he was afraid another magic-user would discover his tricks... well, your tricks."

"Shit!" exclaimed Eric, moments later Thal spoke up "He released the spell..."

Outside, as JohnWillStab respawned, he saw the fat man fall over backwards as the spell used to control him wore off.

"What... what are you going to do to me now?!" Demanded Eric shaking.

"I won't kill you..." Alex began, giving Eric some false hope.

"Hey, Thal."

"What do you want?"

"How does a thousand years of the B*e movie sound to you for punishment?" he asked grinning.

Eric began to sob violently as he began crawling towards the door, he only now realised was locked.

"That's a decent start..." sighed the sword.
