Each aisle was labeled with a symbol. Once inside, one could see small signs at the top of the bookshelves. Finding the sign with the second character, she quickly moved to that section. With a bit of searching, she was able to find what she was looking for.
After picking out three out of the six books. Leo finally came back. She had noticed but ignored it. It had been a while since the last time he found something interesting. Lately he had been oddly quiet. A bit too quiet.
Knowing he would tell her when the time was right, she didn’t ask. Only seeing his expression looking around, she was a bit startled by how strange he was acting.
Feeling like ages since the last time they had held a meaningless conversation, she couldn’t help but whisper, “What has got you so bewildered?”
“Hah, you don’t get it. The world I came from was infinitely different from this world. So how could I not be surprised, seeing things from my old world here.”
“What?” She didn’t whisper this and drew a bit of attention, mostly negative.
“Calm down, it’s not stuff from my old world, it is similar. Though I must say that it surprises me because of how similar it is. There has always been similarities, but magic always changed things, so while they worked the same they were always different in their own ways.”
With a bit of a lapsed expression, she soon turned around and just ignored him. While a bit surprised, it wasn’t the first time he had said such things. Strange as it was, Jessica knew he was telling the truth. Even being able to tell that the similarities this time were really close.
Without knowing exactly what was the stuff from his old world, it gave her nothing to compare the two. If their world had something, why was it strange for another world to have it. As someone who had only been in one world, she didn’t understand his amazement.
“So you had things similar to the information crystal?” She was a bit interested in that. While, she had seen crystals that allowed one to store and display information.
Adventurer’s Guild always had such crystals. They could edit information on crystals, what surprised her was using it herself. Never had she been able to use a complex formation in a crystal that allowed one to interact and search for information that was stored inside.
“It is a computer…” When he saw her expression, he could only pause, “Think of it as a mechanical brain. In the way that you draw in information given to you from your eyes, nose, ears, and even touch. And be able to identify it as something you had seen before from memory.”
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
Seeing that she wasn’t really that impressed, he tried to think. As she was looking up the creatures in the requests, he remembered one gadget that was groundbreaking.
“The thing here is too basic. Imagine, if you will, a crystal that can record your voice.”
Before he could continue, she tried to cut him down, “We have those.”
“To listen to the recorded voice, one needs to have access to that crystal. What if you could connect a number of crystals. Therefore, they all share one database of information.”
Seeing she wasn’t following, he couldn’t help but smile. “That would mean that if you make a recording, it would be supplied to the database, or otherwise be accessible to anyone connected to the same database.”
By now she looked up as she frowned slightly, “I think something like that exist, but I am not certain.”
Seeing him continue to smile wider, she paid more attention, “Now, can you even imagine if that database was accessible by anyone on the continent?”
“That would be amazing, it would allow information to be shared very long distance. In a much faster and more efficient method.”
Seeing him frown, she couldn’t understand, “No… Think about it in a different way. If you record your voice, then send it to a single individual, without any delays…” Seeing her not following, he spelled it out, “In response they record their voice, and it is sent back to you.”
Her frown deepened as she realized his point, her voice was quiet and sounded a bit disturbed, “Long distance communication… That. That would be crazy…”
For the first time, she actually couldn’t even fathom the type of world Leo came from. She had heard many times him mentioning things, though most of which they had with the use of magic. For the first time, something she didn’t believe was possible had been brought to her attention, and it completely bewildered her.
“How?” Her question was understandable. They had talked about it a bit, and she knew there was no mana, therefore no magic in his old world.
“I don’t know. Though, it wasn’t like it was some crazy unknown concept. I just never found the concept interesting. Knowledge was theoretically out there to learn.”
“Theoretically?”
“Yes, even if one found the information. Learned it, comprehended it… Let me ask you this, can you compress your mana? Similarly, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean it will be efficient. There were also trademarks.”
“What are those?”
Pausing, “They were like seals on information. It was the concept of privatizing personal information that is used for the greater good.”
Seeing the confused expression, Leo could only shrug, “Trademarks in general were confusing. It was simply a way to protect your intellectual property. While it wasn’t absolute, it can be seen as an attempt to protect the individual.”
Giving him a look, “Why do I feel like there are a lot of gold mines in your old world. Only you never cared to pay attention to them.”
Seeing her sigh, so heavily, Leo returned a pointed comment back, “As the daughter of an Ever, with unrestricted access to his library. How is it that you know so little?”
As if ignoring him, she continued to look over the information on the creatures on the requests. Currently, she was reading a book that contained information on a creature called a basilisk.
Jessica didn’t have high hopes. The book previous talked about the features of a minotaur. There were also some creatures that there was no information on. For that, she would need to look at the article 3F.
