Fear (171)

Fear (171)

“Interesting, interesting.” At the moment, Cassie was not truly acting abnormal. She was acting the same way she had been before. Outside of the prisoner she had taken. The way she talked and treated the two was the same.

Though, she was the only one that was normal. For Jessica, it was meddlesome. The difference between the two was day and night. For Cassie, nothing had changed. Yet, Jessica felt like so much had changed when in reality, since she didn’t act different. Not much had really changed.

Saleh, was currently distracted. He was by no means less confused or surprised. His mind was taken over by the news he had just received. Not only was her request to look into tax evasion and stealing inside the tribe. This hid a more sinister problem, there was a traitor inside the tribe.

Taking a glance at Cassie, looking at the man in front of her with great interest. And, to her side, a man that was hard to see in such a state. Saleh was trying to come to terms with the fact that someone had betrayed the tribe to such an extent.

They had experienced it a bit while staying for two months. The Blue Wolf Tribe was dangerous, the people there were all similar to Saleh. With instincts that gave them an edge in combat, powerful physiques and a sense of smell that left her with a relief, that she wasn’t an enemy with such a tribe.

Not only could they track, horrifyingly accurate. Some of them had noises that were so powerful they could find people without sight. The wolf pack that gave them trouble before, with powerful bodies and basic teamwork. Add in intelligence, they were a very terror inducing race in terms of ability and military potential.

Once you added on the insider and outsider perspective that was introduced to them as children. It was an eerie sense of utopia. In human society, this effect is often put into citizens. However, this couldn’t fix the inherent flaws that were part of the human race.

So for Saleh who had that mentality, this blow was rather heavy. For Jessica, as a human who was raised by an elf. She had paid a particularly large amount of time studying human society. As an outsider looking in, she was a bit envious of them. She knew she shared human characteristics.

Which was why she wasn’t able to understand what Saleh was going through. While at the same time, she was quickly coming to terms with Cassie.

“So, what group are you a part of?” Cassie was smiling sweetly to the man kneeling in front of her.

Without looking back, it was possible to see fear in his eyes. But he wasn’t saying anything. Having already tried to bite off his tongue, Cassie gripped the bottom of his chin. Using a large amount of strength, she broke a few of his teeth holding his jaw in place. Thus making it impossible for him to finish what he started.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Having threaten to cut off his tongue, making it so that if he wanted to speak later. She would cut off a finger so he could use the stump and blood to write anything he had to say. Without having to explicitly say what would bring about this change of heart.

Therefore, right now, she didn’t really expect any answers. It was something she was doing just for the fun of it. What he didn’t know, was that Cassie’s identity was a secret. Every time she left Mercury City, her mana was sealed, so that the world believed she was a non-graded being.

Meaning the man would never see the light of day again. Mercury City wouldn’t even allow the Blue Wolf Tribe to question him. Any probability of the news spreading would not be tolerated.

A particular look flashed through her eyes when she turned to look at both Jessica and Saleh. Her vision paused on Saleh before staring at Jessica long enough to draw her attention. To which she just smiled, her dimples started to show, causing Jessica to look away. Thus, a teasing light would flash through her eyes.

Pulling out a firework from her inventory ring, she snapped her finger. With a phrase muttered in a cryptic language, a spark lit the fuse. As soon as the wick met the container, it produced a small whistle that flew into the air before it exploded.

The result was a small pop, there was no larger flash or display of anything. However, Jessica and Saleh could feel a unique wave of mana. If it wasn’t for them being directly underneath, they most likely wouldn’t have felt it.

The trio sat silently for a moment. Saleh was distracted by the obvious implications, the man Cassie had caught, along with the people he had dispatched. They were not Blue Wolf Tribe members. The people that had attacked them were human.

Jessica was feeling more and more uneasy. Every time she looked at Cassie she saw the teasing light in her eyes. However, having experienced how deeply she had hidden herself. Jessica wasn’t willing to allow herself to feel any relief from this seemingly normal Cassie.

Saleh might not have noticed. Cassie’s identity was not a joke. A sealing of her mana so perfectly that to the outside world she was a non-graded being. It was an offhand comment, and yet not even Isabel could see through it. The things they had seen, were by no means things they had any right to see.

As he had the backing of Everblood, it was unlikely they would do anything to him. Her, she had connections to people. The old man was gone, but not dead. Beast was in the process of becoming an Ever. She had Leo, by extension had questionable relationship to Izic.

Soon there were movements in the shadows. A group of people appeared. Not all of them were human. Though they all stood behind the lead figure. Helga was walking towards Cassie with a smile on her face.

Glancing at the two, “Good job.” With only those two words, the people behind her started to take care of the aftermath. Cleaning up traces, disposing of bodies. What caused Jessica’s back to tingle. In the back was a limping figure, it was the snow wolf. It had been treated, still heavily injured.

Listening to Saleh mutter to himself. Jessica felt her heart drop when she finally saw that there was no Everblood. Not even an Azeban, there was just Helga and her people.
