Confrontation (148)

Confrontation (148)

Now that the enemy pack had fallen into disarray. Jessica and Saleh had a clean cut path to march forward.

The difficulty before was a team effort. Moving in waves allowed them to protect each other.

Now, each wolf was individually separated. Dealing with at most two at a time. Those not in their path followed a similar trajectory as the Grade F snow wolves.

As one came from the front with many behind it. They moved in from the back, two to three shadows followed them in batches.

By the time the Grade E pack leader realized its predicament, it was already too late. Sensing the mana being given off by the two, this pack leader decided to confront the monstrosity of its own kind.

Having given up on retreating, it let out a howl before the wolves in front of Jessica and Saleh grouped up in a bundle of five, in an attempt to slow them down. Without much of a chance to maneuver, the Grade F snow wolf made it to its proximity.

As if having no conception of what it means to be a snow wolf, Cassie’s snow wolf didn’t bite or claw at the pack leader. Instead, it didn’t stop running and ran straight into the body of the leader.

Being of considerable size, this pack leader was not as large as the other side. That didn’t mean it was small, being around a seventh of the size of the other, it was sleeker and appeared to have an easier time moving around without all that bulk.

This allowed it to avoid a full on collision straight on. So the bulk of the hit wasn’t head or chest first. Protecting the majority of its organs, the Grade E leader seemed to realize it would take damage, opting for a less serious injury.

A huge wall of flesh and muscle rammed into the tail end, causing major damage to the back where the hips and legs connected. Momentum alone caused the pack leader to tumble around in the snow a few times.

Being of considerable size, it was hard to compare the two when one ran on the few feet of snow while the other stood about a foot above the ground as snow packed underneath its paws. Adding to Cassie’s snow wolf already mysterious abilities, it had dipped slightly, as if using its connect to the snow to gain added traction.

Mana was radiating off its body as it tumbled through the snow. As its movements came to an end, a soft cry left its mouth as it stood on its front two paws, dragging half its body to an upright position. However, its target had already fled.

Jessica and Saleh had no choice but to slow down and start to back pedal. The mana coming off the pack leader was no joke, clearly readying to use an innate magic. The wolves, behind, didn’t want to be taken down in friendly fire and scattered in fear.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

As for the culprit of the whole ordeal, it had passed both of them and ran towards the carriage. Soon disappearing into a hill of snow. Unknown if it was fine or injured from its collision with the enemy pack leader. Neither side knew if it would return to fight.

At that moment, the mana seemed to dissipate. Distance between both parties meant it was a waste of mana. However, enough damage had been done that it was clearly in bad shape. Growling intensely, its eyes glowed with angry intent.

Unable or unwilling to drag itself through the snow, it howled to release its pent-up feelings. Those that had fled returned before circling around them.

“We can’t stay in here, you want to break out or will you follow me?” Saleh didn’t take his eyes off the surrounding wolves as he asked.

“You lead, I will take care of the retreat. See if you can ready any magic before they get around me.” Jessica spoke, regretting her lack of ability.

Her ability to cast magic had never been strong. Lacking the ability to cast properly during a fight, she could at least cast a spell or two at the beginning or the end. That was until a period that even her magic abilities had seemed to disappear.

Knowing clearly it had something to do with her dragon blood, that was where her ability to cast mana came from to begin with. As a very powerful ability, her premonitions were something she depended on a lot. It was obvious to her that something had happened to her dragon blood.

The old man, Beast, and Leo never spoke about the incident. She was close to asking a few times. In the end, she too realized that something was wrong. Before and after that incident, she lost her ability to sense premonitions and cast magic.

As a whole, it was a net win. For only after it was gone, so too were the side effects of the dragon blood. The old man was both overprotective and unwilling to allow her to go through something that serious without information to know what was going on.

Therefore, she knew for a long time how she would die. Ever since she entered the laboratory and caused an evolution of her dragon blood premonitions, she had come to terms with killing herself before she turned thirty. If she lost control and started to release blood magic indiscriminately.

Blood magic was something that could allow her to reach Grade A in less than a year. That was by killing and draining ever living thing she came across. Something that could very possibly happen when her dragon blood reached maturity at the age of thirty.

Though, she had underestimated the physiological effects of dragon blood. After a while, she had forgotten the cause. As if her self-preservation had overwritten the memories. The entire world had started to spin beneath her feet.

Soon after, everything disappeared. The world once again had color dripped onto its surface, lighting up everything. Nobody said anything about it, however, after that incident she could feel Leo watching her to ensure that there were no side effects.

Coming to the conclusion that speaking about it could cause whatever done to her to be reverted, she tried not to think about it. Only times like this she felt it a shame she lost it. Which at first wasn’t completely gone, now, she couldn’t even make a magic circle let alone cast a complete spell.

Ducking behind her, Saleh ran past her to her left, slightly behind her. Taking a step back, she followed without turning her back on those in front of her.

Just as Saleh was about to reach a small group of three wolves grouping up to block their path, there was another howl.
