She Doesn't Want Him To Meet Liam
thought he'd put the episode earlier out of his mind, just like she had.
Austyn spoke to the director for a minute.
Then Snee was off to create his blacklist.
He had subordinates who could do it for him, but this order came directly from the big boss and he wanted to make sure it was done right.
Austyn returned to the ward.
Dr Morrison was asking Kira about the swelling on her cheek.
She fibbed and said she walked into a wall.
There was no point in airing her dirty laundry in public.
The perceptive doctor just nodded and dropped the subject. I see your wounds have been tended to. As for your eyes, you can try some home remedies. I'd recommend cucumber slices or tea bags. Or you can apply a cool compress. Just wet a clean towel with cool water and hold it gently to the area
under your eyes. Five minutes should do the trick."
"I'll give it a try. Thank you, Doctor.
"What's wrong with her eyes? Austyn asked.
Dr Morrison pointed to Kira's puffy eyes, still showing traces of red. 'Oh, it's nothing. Just a bit of swelling from crying too much yesterday.'
"You cried?" Austyn studied her face.
When he saw her red eyes earlier, he thought they were from a bad night's sleep.
Kira pursed her lips.
"And how!' Dr Morrison said. "Luckily, she had someone with her who lent her a shoulder. A friend in need is a friend indeed."
Austyn narrowed his eyes. 'Someone was with you? Who was it?"This is property © of .
The doctor, sensing the vibe in the room had changed, pointed to a non-existent watch on his wrist and said, 'Oh, look at the time. I need to go and check on some patients. Mr McCarthy, please call me if
you've any questions. Now if you'll excuse me."
He made a beeline for the door.
Kira gawked at the doctor's back in disbelief.
He was fleeing the scene after digging a hole for her!
Austyn kept up his interrogative stare.
Kira racked her brain for a way to describe Liam,
'He's, uh, he's just a friend. More of an acquaintance, actually, I was mugged on the street the other day. He happened by and helped me chase down the mugger. He got stabbed in the process. I ran into him at The hospital yesterday. He was here to change the bandage on his wound. I was waiting for the doctors to finish their tests on Dad. We got to talking. He left after a while. That's it."
'So he's just a Good Samaritan?'
""Yes."
'Who saved you."
"Yes."
"And gave you a shoulder to cry on."
'It's just...a friendly gesture."
Kira silently berated Dr Morrison who landed her in this pickle.
She thought doctors were supposed to be more professional and less gossipy.
'So, it seems that the man is your knight in shining armour."
Austyn said it with a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.
'I wouldn't go that far,' she replied carefully. "He's just a kind stranger."
A woman's intuition told Kira something she said had rubbed him up the wrong way.
She wasn't exactly sure what it was, but it was best not to poke the bear.
'As your husband, I should probably meet this "kind stranger" who seems to keep running into you." Austyn's eyes bore into her. 'Give him a call. Invite him to dinner. I'll pick up the tab. You do have his number, don't you?' Kira shuffled her feet. 'Um, is that really necessary?'
"Why not? Don't you think I-we should thank him?"
'I've already thanked him."
'But I haven't."
'It's really not that big of a deal. Besides, it happened quite some time ago... You know what they say, a good deed is its own reward.. Maybe he doesn't want to be thanked repeatedly."
'Or maybe you don't want me to meet him."
'No! It's not that! I just don't think it's something worthy of your time. You must have your hands full with running the company. I don't think you should trouble yourself over such trifles." Austyn's lips formed a thin, hard line.
She was bending over backwards to talk him out of meeting the man.
Why?
Kira knew her answer would not be well-received.
She hung her head, but decided to stick to her guns.
Liam did save her, but she left out the part about her returning the favour at the karaoke lounge.
Liam was being pursued by some hard-looking men.
To throw them off the track, he kissed Kira.
She made light of it at that time, but was still feeling awkward.
She did not want to see Liam, much less let Austyn meet him.
But she couldn't share her reason with Austyn-that would be digging her own grave.
She Doesn't Wait rien To Meet Liam
The couple stood intense silence, which was broken by a knock from the door.
'Come in!" Austyn said coldly.
Kai came through the door with a transparent baggie in hand. 'Boss, I filled Young Madam's prescription."
Austyn took the ointment with one hand before tossing it to Kira. 'Do it yourself."
Then he spun on his heel and walked out of the room.
In the smoking lounge.
Austyn lit up a Sobranie Black Russian and inhaled. 'Got it?
'Yes, Boss."
In under an hour, the versatile and ever-efficient assistant had run background checks on the two names his boss gave him.
'Fill me in.'
'Young Madam's biological mother is Helen Raynor. She's married to Michael Vaughn, president of Veron Enterprise. The two of them seem to have a long history going back, maybe even before Helen married Young Madam's father. Georgina Vaughn is their oldest daughter. I'm still working on getting her birth date and year. Without that, I can't say for sure if she was born before Helen's marriage to Mr Hewitt, or during.
Which would make her the product of an extra-marital affair.
Austyn blew out smoke.
After meeting Helen, he had a feeling that the probability leaned towards the latter.
