Austyn felt as if he could stare through her eyes and look right at her soul.
Heat rose from the place below his belt, firing up every cell in his body. He swallowed.
Kira's lips were slightly parted.

She was panting from the effort of the attempted jailbreak half a minute ago.
Austyn inclined his head, moving in for a kiss.
Brring, Brring. Brring, brring.
His ringtone cut in.
Austyn frowned at the untimely interruption..
Deborah was calling him again.
Austyn sucked in a deep breath, leaned back in his seat and answered the call.
'Deborah.'
'Austyn, where are you?" She sounded anxious.
""What's wrong?"
"There's...there's a man outside my door. I don't know if it's Liam or someone else. I'm scared. Could you come over, please?'
Austyn sat up straight. 'Is the front door locked?
'Yes.'
'You've checked?
'Yes, I made sure of it."
"Then you have nothing to worry about. Just stay inside and don't open the door. He can't get
in.'
'But...' Deborah bit her lower lip. 'What if he won't go away?"
'I'll text you the number for the condo management office. Call them. Get them to send a couple of security guards to come up and take a look. They'll chase him away if he's not an authorised visitor.' 'I'm still scared. Could you just come and stay with-'
Austyn gasped.
'Austyn? What's wrong?'
After a long moment of silence, he answered, 'Nothing, I'm fine."
'Are you sure? I thought something happened just n-'This belongs to - ©.
"I'm fine.' Austyn cut her off. 'I'm driving now, so I can't talk. Just remember what I said.
Don't open the door. Stay in the bedroom. Turn on the TV if you're still scared. I'll text you the number ASAP.'

Before Deborah coulksay anything else, Austyn hung up..
She held her phone, listening to the busy tone in daze.

Austyn texted her the number and then tossed his phone onto the dashboard.
He looked down. 'What are you doing?"
His voice was hoarse.
Kira had bitten him on the thigh just now.
His muscles clenched on reflex.
Kira pulled back, rubbing at her cheek.
Her teeth hurt.
Did the man have a tree trunk for a thigh?
Austyn was unhurt.
The gasp
wasn't out of pain, but something else.
A strange sensation originated from the place where she bit him and travelled upwards.
Austyn's body shook like he'd been hit by a mild electric current.
'Do you know what you're doing?"
Kira didn't reply.
She was eyeing his leg, looking for a softer spot to sink her teeth into.

'Still denying you were a dog in a previous life?' Austyn poked her forehead. 'I bet you used to be a Chihuahua.
'Hey!' Kira swatted his hand away. 'No poking!"
She averted her eyes.
Austyn caught her reaction.
He tilted her chin up with a finger. 'Recognise me now?"
Kira played dumb.
"Who am I?' He pinched her nose.
Kira was forced to open her mouth to breathe.
She scrunched up
her face.
Austyn let go.

'H-husband,' Kira mumbled.
Austyn heard it. '1 recall a certain someone a
me of being a bad guy earlier.'
'Really?' Kira looked away. 'I don't recall any such thing. You must have heard wrong.
Austyn shook his head and smiled. 'Idiot.'
Kira sat bolt upright in her seat, reached over and grabbed Austyn's collar. 'What did you call me?"
'Are you sober now?"
'I wasn't drunk to begin with!"
'How much wine did you have?' Austyn didn't believe her.
Kira looked up, trying to recall. 'A bottle... Half a bottle... No, one and a half...I don't remember."
She burped suddenly.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
Her face turned scarlet.
The narrow space in the front of the car was filled with the stink of alcohol.
Austyn wrinkled his nose.
