Chapter 42 Interrogation
"Do you mean my husband when you said another man?" I rose to my feet directly and stared at the female reporter. I had found her familiar just now. Now, it occurred to me that I had seen her in one of Lily's Instagram stories before.
Back then, the gossip chasers had taken a screenshot of Lily's Instagram stories. It just so happened that it was a picture of Lily and this female reporter having lunch at a high-end restaurant.
I lowered my head and looked at the nameplate on her chest. "Vera Bates? Aren't you a good friend of my husband's mistress?"
Everyone fixed their gazes on Vera the moment they heard what I had said. Her face turned red immediately, but she asked stubbornly, "So what if I am? That doesn't deny the fact that I'm an upstanding reporter."
Vera noticed that all cameras were pointed at her, and she fixed her hair. "It's exactly because I'm Lily's friend that I know the truth about the situation.
"Eva Green shamelessly did everything she could to marry herself to Leonard Harmon, but he doesn't love her at all. Now, he wants to divorce her, but she has brazenly rejected it for the sake of money. Shouldn't we expose women like her?
"Eva is a homewrecker who's intervened in someone else's relationship. How could she show herself in front of everyone without an ounce of shame?"
Vera sounded so righteous, but I merely burst into laughter in response.
"Did you just say that I'd shamelessly married Leonard? Don't you need to get your facts straight before you interview someone? He's the one who wouldn't let me go.
"Also, I'm the one who proposed the divorce. Go ahead and ask him to divorce me now if you can." I was done talking to someone like Vera.
By then, the restaurant's security guard had also run over and stopped the reporters.
The people from Brightwave Group saw the commotion and rushed back to the table. Jean glared at the reporters angrily.
"What is wrong with you reporters? Are you going to take pictures of a meal between colleagues? There are so many of us. Why don't you guys snap more pictures?"
Some Brightwave Group employees stood up for me as well. "We had a meeting about the collaboration today, and we're having a meal now that it's over. Are you guys here to make us lose our appetite with your presence?"
"Who are you calling a pretty boy? That's the CEO of Brightwave Group. Maybe you need to visit the eye doctor!"
"You're all bringing down the actual wife and supporting the homewrecker. What the heck is wrong with you?"
The young ladies working at Brightwave Group spoke so harshly that the reporters ran with their tails tucked between their legs in no time.
Meanwhile, I stared at everyone somewhat awkwardly. We shared a look and exchanged smiles before we laughed out loudly.
I had a good time during the meal, but the same couldn't be said for what happened later that night. Although the reporters could piece together the truth, none of them were willing to write articles about it.
After all, the netizens weren't interested in the truth. They just wanted to watch the drama happening within a wealthy and powerful household.
So, Leonard and I appeared on the trending topics once again. All kinds of things had been written the Harmon couple was headed for divorce, the reporters were sinisterly called homewreckers in their past life, the former Mrs. Harmon took the Harmon Group's share for herself, and more.
In any case, each searchable keyword was more ridiculous than the last. The articles were getting more and more colorful as well. I also had a good time reading up on some theories the conspiracists had cooked up.
These posters were quite creative. It took them only one night to almost piece together a complete truth about me and Leonard.
There was one glaring mistake though. I wasn't a lady who was holding onto a wealthy supermodel and crying my eyes out. Instead, I was a poor sap who was holding onto my medications and awaiting my next chemotherapy treatment.
The next day, I received a call from Leonard first thing in the morning. I knew it. He wasn't going to let me off the hook so easily. The same went for the Harmon family.
As expected, Mr. Harmon Senior had seen the news on the internet as well. He ordered us to return to the Harmon residence immediately.
"I'll give you a ride. We'll head back together." Leonard sounded a little helpless. It looked like he was having a headache over what had happened yesterday.
I pulled out my phone and noticed that a lot of the trending topics had been suppressed. From the looks of things, the Harmon family had done something.
I didn't reject Leonard this time. If I were to show up at the Harmon residence separately from Leonard, I was afraid that Mr. Harmon Senior would get so upset that he might die on
the spot.
When we arrived at the place, Mr. Harmon Senior was beside himself with rage. He even struck Leonard several times with his cane, and Leonard took the beating wordlessly. Bob, Darius, and their families didn't make a peep as they watched the drama unfold.
"Look at what the two of you have done! What was all that crap on the internet? The stock
price is falling as we speak. Do you both even care about it?"
Leonard might have set up a branch company, but his actions had affected the entire Harmon Group. Naturally, Mr. Harmon Senior was mad at him.
It seemed like Ivy couldn't take it anymore. She walked toward me leisurely and said, " You're also inexcusable, Eva. You had pictures taken when you were having a meal with another man. How could you be so careless?"
I nodded solemnly. "You're right. I was out for a meal with about eight people, but I was misunderstood all the same. It is kind of strange."
Only a handful of people knew that Zack and I had gone out for a meal. Then, Lily's closest friend had shown up at the restaurant as well. I didn't have to spell out who had exposed it.
Mr. Harmon Senior glared at Leonard angrily before he looked at me. "That young man represents Brightwave Group. Isn't that right, Eva?"
"Yeah. He's Zack Boyd, and he's also our senior at college."
"He's not my senior!" Leonard responded furiously, only to receive another beating from Mr. Harmon Senior and his cane.
"If he's your senior at college and your current business partner, then just clarify the whole thing openly. He's a Boyd, you said. That means he's taken his mother's family name. So, it turns out that it's him."
I didn't think that Mr. Harmon Senior knew Zack. I was about to ask further about it, but Leonard glared at me. Mr. Harmon Senior saw that and didn't like it. So, he whackedMaterial © of .
Leonard again.
"What's that look on your face? The two of you have to get a handle on this mess. Starting
today, you'll be staying here until the company's anniversary party is over. I won't take no for an answer. It's already been decided."
