"I'm sure." Giana patted the side of the bed. 'I was just.. surprised."

That was too mild a word to describe what she was feeling.

She took a deep breath, then another, and another.

When she finally calmed down, she said, 'Okay, I'm good. Carry on. Any more bombshells you want to drop? Don't tell me you have kids."

'No, no kids,' Kira said hurriedly. "Just the marriage."

'Okay. When did it happen?'

'A year ago."

'A year?!" Giana raised her voice.

'Watch your stomach, Kira placated her friend by stroking her back. 'Please don't get too excited."

"You've been married for a year and you didn't tell me? Giana swatted Kira's hand away.

Glana pursed her lips.

'No wonder he came to your rescue, Giana said. 'I should've known the M Group's president is not the type to help a random stranger out of the goodness of his heart. So you're married to him? Or is he your man on the side? "I'm married to him."

'How long have you known each other? When did you two start dating?"

'It's not like that.' Kira looked away. 'Do you remember a year ago, I told you a Good Samaritan had donated enough money to save my father?"

"That's right. The actress,' Giana knitted her brows. "I remember reading somewhere that she has a thing going with Mr McCarthy, Is it true?"

Kira plucked a speck of lint off the sheet. 'I don't know what kind of relationship the two of them have."

She didn't want Giana to worry about her.

Giana would blow a casket if she knew Austyn was cheating on Kira.

She would stand up for Kira, just like Kira tried to stand up for her.

A confrontation with Austyn would be inevitable.

Kira didn't want that.

It was more important for Glana to rest and recuperate

'Then why did she want to meet you? Giana asked. "And why did you get into her car? When I got there, she looked like she was ready to stomp you to death."

Kira bore the sharp stab of pain in her heart.

When she saw Kayleigh's stiletto heel coming towards her, she'd prayed for a miracle..

She prayed for Austyn to be there.

'She wanted me to leave Austyn,' Kira said quietly, forcing a smile. 'She even tried to copy from idol drama and offered me money."

'Pfft, 'cos that's all she knows." Glana scoffed. 'She's played nothing but rich, pampered ingénues who think the world revolves around them and who only know how to solve a problem with a chequebook. Her acting sucks, by the way." Kira smiled, genuinely this time.

"I asked for ten million dollars, as a joke of course. But she took it seriously. Yesterday, she came to me and said she agreed to pay."

Kira withdrew the folded-up cheque from her pants pocket.

She smoothed it out on the bed. 'This is for a hundred thousand dollars. She said it was a deposit. She would give me the rest of the money after I leave Stamford."

Giana's eyes grew round with shock. 'Wow, she was serious."

Kira nodded.

Giana picked up the cheque and examined both sides. 'Doesn't look like a counterfeit. She's one rich bitch."

Kira hid a smile.

'Wait, does this mean you've accepted her terms?' Giana looked up. "You're going to leave Austyn?"

Kira evaded the question. "I took the cheque as evidence."

'Evidence for what?'

To show to Austyn." Kira folded the cheque and put it back in her pocket. 'It wasn't the first time she'd come to me. At first, I just wanted to get rid of her, so demanded ten million. It was a number I plucked out of the air. I didn't expect she would actually whip out her chequebook."

'Then I decided to turn her trick to my own use. I accepted the cheque, planning to show it to Austyn later. I don't have the power or connections to go up against an A-list celebrity, but he does. Then I can wash my hands of the whole thing."

Kira was still filled with self-reproach.

Giana was being kind and understanding, but there was no denying that her injury was caused, albeit indirectly, by Kira.
