Vol.4 Chapter 8 - Holy Quest

Part 1 – 3 Months Passed

I was lying pleasantly on a good long chair in the church. Unlike the outside, the inside of the church was quite warm.

“What a bliss day....” I muttered in my extreme boredom.

A person walked up to me who was lying on the chair and kicked me off.

Bang

You took 10 damage

And I landed on my face again....

“Ouch! What the hell was that for?” I demanded.

I looked at this person closer and realised that it was Alexandra. I couldn't tell because ever since 3 months ago, I haven't seen her much and she was blending in with the other paladins much more.

Viv has also been going somewhere as well, trying to find a High Ranked Ice Spirit to make a contract with although he had no such luck at all. I think the old priest said something like the spirits don't like people who want a contract with them but already have one of a higher quality then them.

And Viv had to be in contract with one of the highest beings....a God.

As I was thinking all of this, Alexandra glared at me with some hostility.

“Eden, shouldn't you be training?” asked Alexandra in a kind voice that also meant that she was very angry at me.

I found out a while back that her being kind means a lot of bad things for me.

“Yeah I did.” I answered while lying on the floor.

“Didn't llyfr say you have to have at least 15 level ups for your skills per month?” she asked with suspicion.

“Yeah, I levelled all of my skills by 1 level per month beside the Body Transformation which I am not allowed to use at all. I already raised all of my skills by 3 levels overall. I don't see the problem” I answered.

Though my tone might make it seem easy, it was really hard to level them up properly and it was more of a pain to try and level up Magic King Drive since it only last a few seconds per day.

“You are lazy! Ever since we reached level 200, you've been so lazy! Both me and Viv are way passed you in levels now. Anyway what level are you?!” shouted Alexandra.

Isn't level only a general outline of the strength of a character? I mean, all three of us are way more powerful then other players at the same level.

I thought about it for a bit and said, “Two Hundred and....was it ten or twelve. Its one or the other.”

“...”

I thought I saw a vein pop just then. Alexandra grabbed me and started dragging me by the legs. With one pull she lifted me up and onto her shoulders.

“That's it! We are taking the Holy trial now!” she said while walking to the office of the old priest.

Well back then he didn't have an office but ever since the new renovation, a lot of people have gotten new stuff. She kicked down the door and threw me on the ground...hard.

The old priest stared at both of us and said with a smile, “Oh its nice to see you two. Alexandra, why are you treating Eden so badly?”

Yes, why are you treating me badly?

“We are taking the trial NOW! At least that will get this bum off its feet!” she shouted.

The old priest was taken back by her statement. He looked at both of us and sighed...deeply. Hey, I want to sigh as well! I was kicked off while sleeping for God's sake!

“Well if you wish. You all did reach the one and only requirement I had. Get Viv and I will explain everything from the start so the other two and you, yes you too Alexandra will know everything you need to know for the Holy Trial. I believe Viv is just outside the church. If not there Viv should be with one of the patrols. Don't bother with that whispering thing you freemen have. Alexandra go get her...I mean him. Why is that telling gender is so hard for you three?”

Alexandra stormed out of the room which left me and the old priest together. When the old priest checked that no one was near us he started talking.

“This is bad.” he bluntly stated.

“Yeah I know this is bad” I replied in almost a whisper.

“How is the seal? How much time left now?”

I looked at the 5 rings on my right hand. Each ring has a stone on it symbolising the elemental powers it contains. The red on is fire, blue one is water and so on. The rings themselves without the stones don't do jack but it allows the power of the stones to be transmitted into me to prevent more of me from changing. But this plan is imperfect since the power of only five stones. Five elements isn't enough to prevent my body from changing or something like that.

Its a very long story that involved Warlic appearing to tell me a way to stop my....change in exchange that I would gather some rare stones for him to use or whatever to stabilise the area in spacial and time distortion.

Long story short, I completed it and he taught me a method to help prolong my life.

Every day, all five stones will break in total but one my one. When one stone breaks, I have to create another one to replace it using creation magic.

Thanks to that, my skills using Creation Magic greatly increased and levelled up quite nicely in the first month of usage. Well I wasn't going to get the materials to make a new one manually even if the quality of the stones decrease a bit when I recreate one using Creation Magic. I had enough trouble the first time round getting those stones.

But the problem still remains that my body was being corrupted by llyfr's power because I kinda overused it 3 months ago for some reason which still is kinda blurry to me. Back then, I used too much power from llyfr and....well quite a bit happened. llyfr is mainly trying to stop the corruption from spreading as much as he can from the inside while I do the same for the outside but things aren't that simple.

Now back to the main story and less backtracking!

“At this rate.....I have around 5 months. Perhaps more if I find a way to reduce the corruption as much as possible. I'm planning to add another 5 rings, in total 10 rings in total on each hand to amplify the seal. That will give me some more time.” I explained.

“And if that doesn't work? What if it breaks in battle?” he asked worryingly.

“Then I'll make sure that doesn't happen. I'll add...safety preclusion later. Anyway, the main problem is with the trial correct?” I said changing the subject.

To be honest, with all of this stuff happening, I don't think I have time to upgrade my safety preclusion any time soon. Well, everything will be fine as long as I don't need Alexandra to kill me.

The old priest made a distressed look and said, “Yes. Its....umm.....kinda broken at the moment.”

“Broken? What do you mean broken?!” I said in an outrage. How the hell does a Holy quest become broken?

The old priest took a moment to calm me and continued explaining.

“The Holy Quest.....is essentially facing your darkness. Well to be more precise the shadow of the strongest person there in hopes they cooperate and such. Which means your darkness. In any shape or form. Well sometimes its three different entities and other times its the combination of all three people at the same time but we have predicted that it is most likely the strongest person's shadow since you three are a bit stronger then the last ones that tried to complete the trial” he said regretfully.

“And what happened to them?”

“Oh, they came out insane and I think there was a baby as well.....”

“This is bad. Really bad!”

I don't want that to happen to me! I seriously not want that to happen to me!

“Yes! But even if you don't take it with her, things will still end up the same with the young girl....I mean boy. Damn your genders are so hard to get sometimes. It must be because of old age. Anyway, you said 3 months ago that Alexandra was not needed in your journey to collect....the mana fragments right?” asked the old priest.

“Yes.” I answered coldly.

It was the truth and frankly if Viv wasn't there was well, it wouldn't be that much harder since the difficulty is and will always be beyond what I can normally be able to do.

“And it was because you were strong enough to do so by yourself.” he asked again.

“Not really.” I answered again.

“So....can you collect them by yourself?” he asked a bit confused now.

“Yeah.....I was conscripted into collecting them, plus I can die as many times as I want so its all fine”

Well I have to grind back the levels every time I die though.

“And either you or Viv could've finished the quest I gave you three months ago by yourself as well?” he asked once more.

“Pretty much. Unlike Alexandra, both me and Viv have some large scale magic that can blow up the dungeon and anything in it in one go. Especially Viv since I don't have the power to do so without using everything up at once and die. Having a contract with the highest level nature spirit helps though”

“So is there any real reason why you two keep Alexandra around?”

“Not really....besides safety in numbers plus she's the only good melee fighter among as and Viv follows her not me as well.”

“Why is it like that then?” he asked again.

Why the hell is he asking so many questions?!

“Because of Alexandra. She is though I hate to admit this”, I paused for a bit to think about saying this, “the most normal person between the three of us. She gets scared of strong foes and has bad feelings about things that are dangerous. I don't because....well I have something much more dangerous in me and its killing me right now”, I pointed to my chest, “and Viv is....I have no idea what Viv experienced but have you heard of witches making contracts with spirits or ancient Gods?”

“Yes...I have in fact. There are legends about them though kinda hard to find. Why?”

“Because Viv is one of them. Honestly I don't even know his limit after he made the contract and now he wants to make more of them. He already practically rules over one element which is nature by the way and he is going to get stronger. Stronger than me eventually. Well if I survive that is by then. We're lucky Viv actually has enough common sense to not...do what Alexandra does though I fear she is influencing him. The other day I saw him use his magic to hang a man upside down when he started hitting on him.”

The old priest made a grim look thinking of what I said. After a couple of seconds I asked, “So what are we going to do?”

“Nothing. I can't. We can't. The church can't. This whole continent can't change the Holy Trial!”

“Really? The Holy Trial is the same even if you don't want to? What if we make Alexandra do it on her own?”

“Impossible. The trial is set for 3 people....in order to create chaos between them. One, you can trust yourself. Two you can trust the other. But three, three you may trust one but maybe not the other and that slight feeling will create chaos. The trial will do that.” he explained.

“Then other people. Other players can!”

“Nope. It has to be done with similar power or more than her and....”, the old priest looked down in sadness.

“And?”

“Those she trust the most to the very end. That is the Holy Trial for the greatest of all Templars!” he had a grim look on his face when he said that.

I looked around and saw Alexandra and Viv. To be more precise their souls. Well this ability came back when the seal casted by those guys back in the forest. But...something else was lost instead, well almost lost but.....very restricted.

“Anyway she's coming. Start preparing your speech on...what ever you were about to say.” I said hurryingly and moved away from the old priest.

BANG

Alexandra kicked the door to the office of the old priest down breaking the lock to it.

“Viv wasn't near the church at all! Nor was he on patrol! I had to contact him manually to tell him to come here!” shouted Alexandra in rage.

Oh boy, here it goes again.

“Yes, yes. A common mistake on my part. Old age must be getting to me. Anyway if you calm down and be quiet, I will explain the Holy Trial to you three at once.” the old priest said.

Alexandra soon calmed down when the old priest said that he will explain the thing she was thinking about for so long which resulted on me and Viv being recruited. The Holy Trial. The great Holy Trial which will definitely will be a pain in the ass to complete because Alexandra chose the two worse candidates as companions.

“Before I tell you three where the Trial is since I know that a certain someone will rush there. I'll tell you about it first.” the old priest eyed at Alexandra.

“The Holy Trial otherwise known as the Wise Trial, Testing Trials or Painfully horrible torturous Death Trap is something that will test the will of those who enter and mind you, not many come out. You cannot cheat in the trial since its nature is not of....well you can't cheat since the trial will probably kill you if you do. The objective of the trail....well the trial will give you it in plain sight but it is simply to defeat the foe in front of you. This will be the most painful thing you three will experience...until now. The prize of finishing the trial is....unknown. It is different for every person and each of you will get one. The location of the Trial is.....where the late King of this land drew his last breath. The castle that he and his most loyal Knight lured countless monsters in to trap and give time for his people to escape. It is the location of a great battle many months ago when the curse of an ancient King spread all over the continent. It is the place where the....Embinyu church used as their base. Deep in the Valley of Death is where you'll find the entrance of the Holy Trial. Now go prepared for Death even though it is not the end for you Freeman but it will be the end if you fail. You only have one chance. Remember that.”

Quest: Complete Holy Trial with Alexandra has been updated

Learning of the Holy Trial from the Senior Priest of Freya, you learn that the Holy Trial is at the abandoned castle deep in the Sendeim Valleys otherwise known as the Valley of Death. Go there and complete the Holy Trial to obtain your prize.

Rank: Holy Quest

Requirements: Companion of Alexandra

Reward: Unknown

Quest will fail automatically if the you fail the Holy Trial

Well its about time it shows up. The details that would only appear when it is time, but I don't get why this kind of system was required. Well if everyone knew of such a quest then the said person would be overwhelmed with people and the quest would never start.

“Now then, get your supplies and warm clothes. Eden I have some equipment you may need. I don't really want you going out....in that.” said the old priest pushing Alexandra and Viv away.

I looked at my clothing which was pretty much the same for a very long time. The same Cyclops shirt and pants all worn out and about to break soon. Something that didn't really have much use for me right now. Well I had other equipment but they seem to disappear one way or another.

The old priest took out a large chest from under his table. It was one of those classic treasure chests.

“I believe you may need some new gear.” he said while handing me the chest. I opened it to find new equipment. Everything I needed was here. I checked each and every one of them before putting them on.

The first was some sort of shirt...but I could feel something was different with this one as if it was made with some special sort of material or an enchanter placed something on it.

I replaced my Cyclops shirt with this. It was pure white in colour and sparkled a bit when light is shone on it. However when it was put in the light it turned black instead. Was this shirt covered in the highly valued Mithril? I looked closer to see that the smallest lines were protected by a piece of metal.

Reinforced Mithril Silk Unicorn Shirt   Durability: 50/50   Defence: 25

Made from combining silk and the tail of a Unicorn with some Mithril. It is extremely light and will repel attacks as well to a certain extent from mixing Mithril into the shirt. Extremely rare and powerful as it processes the property of purity and will repel most curses. Made from the skills of a high levelled master, this piece of clothing while has lower Durability and Defence, has much more options to it.

Has the Symbol of the Church of Freya on it.

Restriction:

- Level 200

Options:

- Repels Curses and Purifies the Body

- Blade and Blunt damage reduced by 10%

- Agility increases by 20

- Charm increases by 40

- Fire damage will be reduced by 35%

- Water and Nature affinity will increase

- Mana Regeneration increase by 23%

Next was the pants that would replace my Cyclops pants. Unlike the shirt it was pure black in colour. Like the shirt it had Mithril on it as well so it shone a bit.

Reinforced Mithril Ivory Pants   Durability: 50/50   Defence: 30

Made from combining Ivory with Mithril and other materials to create a strong flexible set of pants that while processing lower Durability and Defence, has much more options. It is the work of a high levelled master and was extremely difficult to make without mistakes on the orders of the Church of Freya. It is meant to be worn with the shirt that was made with it.

Has the Symbol of the Church of Freya on it.

Restrictions:

- Level 200

Options:

- Repels Curses and Purifies the Body

- Kicks will be twice as effective

- Strength increases by 28

- Fall Damage will reduced by 13%

- Lightning Damage will be reduced by 29%

- Fire and Lightning affinity will increase

Both of them while being weaker in the defence department was much more better in the other options which would be worth a fortune if I sold them and it only had a small restriction of level 200 and nothing else. I looked at the old priest in astonishment. Who the hell did this old man know for such things to be created.

“Eden don't be shocked yet. Tell me....have you ever worn shoes in this world before?” he looked down at my bare feet which never had shoes on them for some reason.

I took the shoes or rather boots that the old priest gave me. They were quite light like the shirt and pants. Black in colour as well but has some sort of spikes at the bottom.

Flexible Mithril Boots of Speed and Purity   Durability: 80/80   Defence: 38

Made in a way that it does not hinder the movements of the user. Made from the hands if the highest master, it processes high Durability and defence despite the low amount of Mithril used and other materials that have special properties.

Has the Symbol of the Church of Freya on it.

Restrictions:

- Level 200

Options:

- Repels Curses and Purifies the Body

- Movement Speed increase by 15%

- Fall Damage reduced by 32%

- Agility increases by 70

- Strength increases by 30

- Increase speed on rough terrain

Next was some sort of armour that was to go over the shirt and pants which extended over my arms and thighs. It was made of leather and some metal. The leather covered my chest similar to one of those things females wear when doing archery. The parts on my arms and thighs were half open, only covering the outside part of my limbs. There was also shoulder pads as well but were quite thin compared to the rest of the armour piece. I put this one with great difficulty since it was really hard to put on.

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Full Body Leather Armour Belt  Durability: 78/78   Defence: 23

Made from mostly leather, this has surprisingly high Durability and will not break even under large stress. Fitted to be a mobile defence for high speed battles and has some hidden weapons to be used here and there. The left arm piece is fitted to hold a weapon in place.

Has the Symbol of the Church of Freya on it.

Restrictions:

- Level 200

Options:

- Repels Curses and Purifies the Body

- Able to store a large number of Hidden Weapons in it

- Able to store potions and other substances in the pockets

- Strength increase by 10

- Agility increase by 15

“And finally the last one. The cloak that would ultimately the most important treasure for you.”

The old priest took out a piece of cloth from the chest. It was shining several colours at once and was beautiful. The old priest handed it to me to wear but not before I checked it.

Rainbow Silk Cloak   Durability: 150/150   Defence: 0

Made from the rare and almost illusionary material known as Rainbow Silk. It shines in the 7 colours of the Rainbow and as such is able to adapt itself to any colour imaginable. While it processes no physical defence, it is able to deflected most magicks and curses off it.

Has the Symbol of the Church of Freya on it.

Restrictions:

- Friendly with the Church of Freya

Option:

- Repels Curses and Purifies the Body

- Able to change the colour of the cloak

- Able to turn the cloak transparent with the user

- Deflect most minor magic and curses

I wore it over my new equipment which nicely hid it when it turned into a plain looking cloak with only the symbol of the church of Freya on the side with the rest of my equipment. I looked at the symbol with curiosity and asked, “Why did you put the symbol of your church on all of them?”

“Its simple. Alexandra over the last 3 months have learnt many many new skills and one of them involves repairing the equipment that has the symbol of the church on it. This way, unless Alexandra is very far away and you can't get to her, your equipment is pretty much won't break from the lack of durability. Now off with you. The other two are waiting and I suspect they know that I have given you all of this.” he said with a smile.

I looked at the slot where my sword would be. If I put it in then a long blade would be stuck at the end of my arm.

“What about this? I rather not have a blade stuck on the end of my arm.” I pointed at my sword and at the slot.

“You'll get used to it. It is designed so you can draw your sword much faster and makes sure it won't get stolen....again. That was a real hassle you know? Keep it on and you'll get used to it. Also there is a hidden blade at the end of it as well. Let me show you.”

The old priest moved closer and pointed at a place and a blade did come out. It was not even 30 cm long but it would do for a hidden weapon.

“I doubt you will need this or will remember to use it but its there. Anyway you can go now. I actually have work to do.” he said before sitting at his chair again sorting through some paperwork.”

I walked out of the church knowing that all of the equipment had one thing in common. It was to counter the corruption happening in my body. The corruption is similar to a curse and so it should have some effects on it. 5 pieces of equipment that leaves no place unturned for the corruption to spread, but even that isn't enough.

I sighed as I looked at my skills. They were good enough at this level but compared to how high my stats had grown it was quite pitiful. Thankfully one of the bonuses of llyfr was that none of my skills or spell fail which leaves the skill level to determine the damage of my skills.

I look back at Morata one last time before stepping to the Valley of Death.

Part 2 – The Beginning of the Holy Trial

Alexandra was charging straight at the enemy statues waving her big sword around while at the same time shooting Holy Bolts, a basic Holy Skill at them at the same time.

“Alexandra, calm down.” I said to the raging woman.

She crushed another statue using the side of her sword and said to me, “How can I be calm?! We have been destroying these damnable things for days now! And we're no closer to finishing the Holy Trial!”

“I can assure you that 'this' is not the Holy Trial. I don't think statues....which are golems mind you count as the darkness we have to face. It's far worse....we'll find the location soon enough.” I said to her.

“But we have searched this place over and over again and more of these things pop up! Holy Bolt!” she complained shooting another Holy Bolt at a statue shattering it in one go.

“There must be some hidden entrance somewhere since others have ransacked the place and yet none of them found the entrance to the Holy Trial. Anyway how is Viv doing? Did he find something yet?”

“Not yet. He's still searching at the edges of the place just in case and is working inwards. On the other hand, there's another wave coming out again.”

As she said, there were a dozen or so more statues coming at us. The statues were human shaped and could swing a sword but they were slow and brittle in design or with time. We don't know where they come from or how they function but I suspect that they are Golems set up by someone to protect whatever is left here and....its probably the church's doing. But I better not tell her that or the church might be destroyed.

“Well then, let's get rid of this lot before we discuss where in this ice hell is the entrance! Dance of Water!” I shouted while moving around the statues that lack any kind of imagination.

As I was wandering around the attacks of the statues Alexandra asked, “Why are you doing that?”

I looked at her with disbelief.

“How can you not tell?! I am training my skills here and frankly I'm interested in what happens when Dance of Water reaches Intermediate Level.”

Several Minutes later....

Dance of Water has levelled up

Dance of Water has been converted from Beginner Level 10 to Intermediate Level 1

- Skill will cost only half

- Skill Six Strike Form has been integrated into 'Dance of Water'

- Able to use Six Strike Form in Dance of Water passively

“Oh good!” I said while we were completely surrounded by statues that numbered in the hundreds.

“What is it?!” screamed Alexandra while holding off most of the army of statues.

I looked at her with glee and answered, “My skill levelled up!”

She made a face of disbelief and shouted, “So?”

“I can now fight without holding back!” I answered happily.

“What?”

If the previous face was one of disbelief then this one was of utter despair. It was a fun kind of face and I really needed fun since I'm stuck here in the middle of a statue army! Jeez....I need some way to relieve my stress.....like destroying the army in front of me.

I ran up to Alexandra while using my new upgraded skill to smash my way through the statues...quite easily if I say so myself and it was so much easier to fight this way than before thankfully.

“Alexandra, Alexandra!” I called.

“What is it?! Are you going to destroy the army or something?” she shouted while piercing her sword into another statue.

“Yep!” I replied.

“There are over a hundred of them. I doubt that you can defeat them all.” she said with great confidences.

This person.....did she forget that I destroyed an entire army that numbered 500 and they were moving towards me as at high speeds as well. I took out one of the stones on the rings and prepared to use a large scale spell.

“What are you doing?” asked Alexandra who was confused and afraid since she knows this was my life-line.

I explained it to her.

“For me to use large scale magic now, I need to break one of these since they also restrict my use of magic. I can of course use minor spells but I'm the kind of person who goes with a very big bang. Fortunately I can replace these once in a while so I can use say 3 of them per day.”

I pressed the stone harder and harder trying to break it.

BANG

Just when I was about to do my part....why does this keep on happening? I looked to see that massive roots coming from the ground was destroying the statue army easily. It looks like I'm not needed yet...

I placed the stone back in the ring and went with Alexandra to meet with Viv who was for the last couple of days searching for the entrance we need.

When we saw Viv he was pounding his head on the wall. Why was he pounding his head on the wall?

“Viv?”

“It was just there.” he pointed at the staircase down and went to it and pushed a brick and a giant hole appeared on the wall.....

With great displeasure, all three of us walked through the hole that was much bigger the further we went in. Though there was no light sources, the whole place was strangely lit enough for us to see. This place also screamed Boss Monster at the end....well there was one and I don't want to face it.

After a long hike we reached the end where there was a 10 metre tall door that looked very very old and most likely housed the Holy Trial.

Alexandra went over to the writing on the door and read it aloud, “When there is a Bright Light there is a Dark Shadow. To face the Darkness means becoming Darkness itself. But to be the Darkness you must be the light as well. You the bringer of Light have a great darkness you must face. You the bringer of peace have a great war to face. You the bringer of destruction have the greatest darkness to face. Do not fear the Darkness for it is yourself. But fear it because it is you. Destroy the Darkness to complete the Trial. When the Darkness dies so will you.”

“Is there anything else?” I asked.

“No, besides the instructions to open the door, nothing at all” she replied.

“What's with this polar opposite connection? From what I know, we have to kill something but something else dies as well. Most of this doesn't make sense right now. I wonder if there is something else written on the other side.” said Viv.

Well...that was very uncomfortable since I know what's coming now. There were further instructions making us go to one of these slates on the wall. There were three of them. One had the symbol of a shining sun which was most likely Alexandra, another had the symbol of a moon which by default was Viv since the last one was definitely mine. The last one had the symbol of a Dragon. Also known as bringer of destruction to many and all extremely powerful and dangerous.

We all placed our hand onto the symbol and the door slowly opened with great noise as if it was rusting....well it was made of stone and has to slide on stone so of course it makes a lot of noise. We walked in and the door closed on us as expected.

“So its a one way ticket eh” said Alexandra excitingly to the challenge.

We walked some more not talking but observing around us to find whatever we need to fight. There was no words nor instructions at all in this room. The room was a 30 by 30 metre one and was around 5 metres tall. It was quite big and there was nothing in here at all which shouldn't happen at all....

Tap....tap....tap....tap....tap....

Something was walking to us. We all turned and saw....me. It was a shadow version of me. I knew of this before but it was quite....disturbing to see it myself.

Did I really look that much like a girl?
