Vol.1 Chapter 4 - Failure

Vol.1 Chapter 4 - Failure

Part 1 – The training continues.

Its been 3 days since I started the third phrase of the magic training. Haven't had much progress but I'm getting there. The first thing you have to know is that I can perfectly create the second and third light ball and move all of them at the same time now. This resulted in the appearance of the Magic control skill.

Magic Control Passive Skill Beginner Level 1(32%)

Allows you to manipulate and control magic more easily. It does not affect the speed of the magic but it'll increase your ability to control it properly. As this skill increase you will be able to control the range and trajectory of your magic more easily.

After this appeared I could move the light balls around my body with ease. Well as I said before the bracelet probably helped a lot as well. But then my current problem is something the bracelet can't help me with as I found out. I can create and control up to 4 light balls at once and control 3 of them at once but I can't seem to go further than that. I wonder why? It also has been a while since Warlic or Crysero came in to check on me.

BOOOOOOOM

What was that! Damn this is getting scary.

Bang Bang Bang

Now what happened? Wait that was my light balls......did I lose focus?

The room now had a couple of cracks here and there from my training. No wonder why Warlic didn't really want to train me. The training creates a mess.

Another day passed without me making any progress.

Part 2 – The fourth phase

Warlic finally checked in. I wondered where he was and what he was doing. He looked exhausted but seemed fine other than that.

“So how did your training go. How many light balls can you create and control now?”

I'm surprised that he didn't spy on me like before. But that's my own opinion on him.

“I can create 4 balls and can control 3 at once.”

Warlic seemed shocked but regained his calm expression again.

He asked, “Can you show me then.”

So I did. I focused on create one light ball at a time and then tried to move them. My progress on moving the fourth once didn't go any further but 3 light balls flew around freely.

“Are you perhaps a genius or something? Doing this much in days is almost unheard of. It takes months if not years of practise to do this much.”

Wow...it really takes that long to get to this stage. Now how long did he take....

“Warlic how long did it take you to do this?” I said putting up a grin of superiority.

“I could do this much to begin with. I took me...around a day to create around a hundred of them and manipulate them freely. I did this when I was 5 I think.”

Well that killed my confidence. I was kinda depressed now.

“Well I'm different form most people anyway. Those who trained in the arcane ways take a while to make the first step or two. Don't worry. Your progressing faster than I expected.”

Now my confidence went up a bit.

“Well, you passed the third phrase. Now the fourth phrase is a lot easier than the third.”

“Why?”

“Because the third is used to test your limit. The fourth is simply learning spells to use. As you may realised yesterday, me and Crysero finished the adjustments on the monsters you'll face. Now you need an offensive spell to kill them.”

YAY! FINALLY!

“But you need to learn the basic of magic combat.”

…........fuck.

“I'll start now. Also you can continue with the third phrase as long as it doesn't distract you from my lecture.”

“Wait I thought I had to focus to use the magic.”

“Try making a light ball without think much.”

Wait how does someone do that? Its not like a light ball can magically appear out of nowhere in my hand.....HOLY SHIT! It did appear. My god! How the fuck did I do that.

In my hand there was a single light ball floating around and not doing much.

“See. The training also served to help you cast spells without thinking too much. It won't help if you are trying to cast a spell and a goblin starts beating you to death mid way.”

“True.”

I rather not die in such a way.

“Now let my lecture start! First of all what do you know about the elements?”

This was kinda easy.

“Each elements have different properties and they each have individual strengths and weaknesses.”

“Correct but did you know that if used in certain ways the weaknesses can be neglected and bypassed altogether?”

Yeah kind of...I suppose someone stronger can cast a bigger spell to counter another spell. Also a smaller spell may be the same strength as a large one but the smaler one will win.

“Yeah. An attack to a single point will be more powerful than an attack that reaches to a long range.”

“Correct. But you haven't considered the actual strengths of the mages using the spells. Even if you throw a ice bolt to a fireball, it'll still melt completely if the ice is too weak or the fire is too strong.”

“Yeah I know that.”

This is an explanation of the simple stuff.

“Now what happens if you have a ice bolt that is so powerful that the fireball cannot stop it at all and cannot melt it.”

“Umm...you dodge the attack?”

“Yeah but what if you manipulate your fireball to condense when the ice bolt is in it? What will happen next?”

“The ice spike will be affected in some way.”

“How much will it be affected and why?”

“It depends on how much the fireball is condensed because it depends on umm.....the amount of fire blocking it.” I answered. I wasn't too sure about this part.

“No! The reason why you condense it is to increase the heat. Fire is made from vibrations in the air. So the more vibrations the larger and hotter the fire. If you condense the amount of space the fire can spread, it'll increase the temperature in the space because the vibrations have nowhere to go. Ice on the other hand is the opposite. The air is frozen and the same vibrations cease to be.”

I see....but what does this have to do with the elements.

“This shows that it doesn't matter what element you use if you know how to use it. But if you change the properties then it'll be affected by the other elements differently as well.”

“So...will you get to the point?”

“Ah yes...There are 5 main elements of this world. Fire, wind, lightning, earth and water.”

“What about ice?”

“That is the polar opposite of fire and they affect each other at the same rate as it is made of water and wind magic. Anyway the elements are strong against the other in the same order. Fire>Wind>Lightning>Earth>Water>Fire. There are a couple other elements made from the five main ones. Ice is combination of water and wind. Lava is made from fire and earth. There are also the elements of light and dark which are polar opposites and are unaffected by the other elements in terms of strengths and weaknesses.”

“What about healing spells? Are they considered light element? And are curses considered dark element.”

“Yes and no. They are part of the series but are not directly part of it. There are other factors as well such as life. Necromancy is a combination of dark elements and the life factor. Healing is a combination of light element and the life factor. Besides the life factor there is also the death factor, wild factor, berserk factor, dragon factor, demonic factor and so on...”

“So what are these factors?”

They seem more interesting then how some elements are stronger than others.

“There are twelve main ones that are commonly used. Each one is an opposite to another in a circle format.”

Warlic drew a circle and wrote down the names of these factors.

- Life and Death

- Demonic and Divine

- Push and Pull

- Berserk and Dragon

- Bluff and Curse

- Create and Consume

“Most magic fall under the Create factor. Of course there's a lot more that don't and some that are a combination of others but these 12 are the most commonly seen and used, at least where I came from. Now lets continue...”

Part 3 -  Combat training

After a couple of hours of how each element works and how to use them which I found very boring besides the fact there's apparently a 'good' and 'evil' element as well. They are apparently made from all the elements and the good and evil factor. Warlic then proceeded to pound the mastery skills of all the elements into me.

“Well I won't go as far to pound every one into you but these are the basic 8. Now you'll be using fire magic against the foes. With the exception of one they are weak to fire. The other one is weak to light magic. Figure it out.”

So its up to me again. Man hell training is coming closer and closer.

“Why didn't you teach me a spell like fire ball?”

“Why would I?”

Because you're responsible for me dragging me into this mess but I can't say that. I made a different answer.

“Because that's how you learn new spells. You get a fireball book and read it to learn the magic.”

Is it done differently in his world?

“Hmm...how interesting. What I taught you is the basic of the basic. It'll allow you to manipulate the elements itself. It depends on you to learn and master the spells you want whether its through a book or experimenting. My magic seems to be much more flexible than your world's magic.”

So you won't teach me either way.

With that we walked to the next and final phrase of the training. The moment we got near the yellow line that separated the tower into two I saw there was a massive number of the Bugbear,  Laundry Golem and the dirty sockmonkey. I couldn't even count the number of enemies I had to face.

“You can begin any time. For your benefit you can cast one spell before crossing the yellow line.”

Well I've be damned. What spell do I use...hmm...fire will work but I need a lot of it.

I thought of creating a big fire that would push the enemies away enough for me to get in. Using my knowledge which came from Warlic pounding it into me I imagined a large fire spreading and consuming all of them.

“Flamethrower.”

In an instant a massive fire came out of my hands and burnt back the countless foes in front of me. This will be easy.

I checked my experience bar to see it rapidly increasing as well. It was literally increasing by 3% per monster I killed but I was killing so many of them at once that I would level up quickly. As fire was coming out of my hands I walked over the yellow line and continue the massacre.

You have levelled up

You have levelled up

“Eden! These monsters have infinity respawn capabilities so be careful”

No need to worry I have plenty of mana to spare wait what?! My mana was less then 200 in a matter of a couple of seconds?! Shit! I have to stop before I run out.

I stopped the flames coming out of my hands and I saw the remains of the monsters. However the bugbears were mostly unaffected by my fire. It seems it was the monster without the weakness to fire.

For now I have to stall for time. They shouldn't respawn so quickly. But such thoughts were quickly killed off.

Behind the group of Bugbears that numbered in the 20s was another group of 40 which were made of Laundry Golems and the dirt Sockmonkeys.

Shit! Why are they respawn so fast?! Damnit I have to make a wall.

I focused my thoughts on making a sturdy wall. It was a mix of Earth and ice elements which were both solid. This strengthened the wall I made but it took a total of 50 mana to make it.

“Earth-Ice Wall.”

I looked back at Warlic who was calmly looking at my current situation without any care.

“Warlic! Why are they respawning so fast?!”

“Well they are weaker so we made so they could come back more easily then before and this is the results. Don't worry. You can deal with them at with your abilities.”

No I can't! I'm already down 100 mana in the first 20 seconds and I have no way to get it back fast enough.

Before I could complain the wall started to break down. The bugbears were hitting it, the laundry golems were smacking it and the sockmonkeys were kicking it. With so little mana left I have no choice but to use smaller spells to deal with them.

First I waited for them to break a big enough hole that I could run into. After a bit they managed that. I imagined lightning shocking and stunning them all and waited for my chance.

Now!

“Chain Lightning.”

I used a chain lightning attack for a split second which stunned them for 2 seconds. It used up 30 mana just for that but I managed to run through and get to the other side.

Good now I can push them to the corner.

I then used a wind magic to push them back into the right corner of the wall.

“Wind Gust.”

This costed 15 mana. Less than I expected but it did not last long and was not complicated to use. With the monsters in the corner I could either burn them or freeze them.

Which one do I use now...

Freezing them won't kill them but it'll give me time to regain some mana. So I casted an ice magic that went deep into the foes' bones and froze them.

“Freeze.”

This too up a massive 50 mana since it took a while to freeze them all.

Good now I have some time....wait what are those shadowy figures I see? It can't be...no way...more of them.

Opposite to the wall came another group of 40 monsters this time containing bugbears as well. With a little over 100 mana left and no plan I had to do something quick.

Wait! I can hide from them. There should be a couple of storage rooms and they can't get me there...at least for a while.

With a new plan and 40 monsters to get through I used some of the ice I made and converted it to water onto the floor. It wasn't a lot of water but it would allow electricity to flow through it well enough instead of air.

“Flood”

Casting the water magic costed 20 mana which was still kinda expensive but I'll have all the time I need after this. With water under their feet, I casted a lightning spell with the image of a lightning bolt coming out of my fingers.

“Lightning Bolt”

They should be stunned enough for me to pass them. Now to find a storage room...

And they were stunned. But only for 3 seconds. With this time I managed to get a 10 metre gap between us but they were closing in quick. To my left I saw a door that I probably could get into if I tried.

In there!

I ran straight to it, opened the door, got in and slammed the door shut.

Few....good now I can rest.

Bang Bang Bang

Or not.

The mobs outside the door were pounding on it. The door would probably last only for 10 minutes or so at this rate.

Damnit I don't have the mediate skill because I'm not a mage...despite the fact I can use magic as easily as a mage. I doubt Warlic knows that he could give me a class in the first place but what the hell?! Anyway this is a storage room right?

I scanned the small room I was in and thankfully found that it was a normal storage...a side from the numerous unspeakable things in here with me. I sat down trying to conserve some energy and allowed my mana to increase. As the banging of the door increased, so did the time until I had to get out shortened.

Wait didn't I level up twice before? Yeah I did! I should have 10 points to spend now! Lets see I have no need for strength for now but the agility would be useful. I have more than enough intelligence and wisdom for now so 10 points in agility should be fine right?

I opened up my status window and placed 10 points in agility.

Status WindowNameEdenTypeNeutralLevel3ClassNoneFame30Infamy0TitleNoneHealth120Mana320Strength11Agility21Wisdom42Intelligence43Vitality12Stamina11Concentration23Offence10Defense10Magic Resistance1%

My stats are a bit different from before. My intelligence and wisdom increased a bit when I was training with the light balls. Stamina for some reason increased by 1 as well. I guess it was about time it increased in the weeks I played. Health and mana increased by 20....oh my magic resistance increased by 1%. Was it because of the element masteries I have? Well it doesn't do much for now.

After 10 minutes and regaining around 200 mana to my maximum the door was about to give out. Planning my escape from the room I prepared a couple of things. First was to use both lightning and wind magic to make my escape. Then to stall a bit of time I would then make Earth spikes come from the ground and  kill a couple of them for the experience.

Come on.....when will they break down the door.....or I can just blast it away. That sound fine to me. Have to thin them out first.

I prepared a earth spike spell in my mind said, “Earth Spike” and spike made of the floor of the tower came out and impaled a couple of the monsters.

Now to get out of this room. But can I use two spells at once? I'm pretty sure its the same concept as making several light balls at once.

In my right hand I imagined a sharp blade and in my left I imagined a wall of wind. The air around my hands moved a bit before becoming what I wanted it to be.

“Wind Blade. Wind Gust. Contain”

Good, now how much mana did I lose with that? Lets see I lost 20 mana from the Earth spikes and another 30 from the two spells I casted just now. Time to get started.

I cut the the bolts of the door with the wind blade which meant that the monsters can push in now, but I also used the wall gust to stop them. It seems that the wind gust drains my mana at a constant rate as well so I just pushed the monsters and mob to the opposite wall quickly.

I just used up half the mana I gained. Well might as well kill some more of them.

I imagined a ball of fire in front of me, being throw at the stack of monsters at the wall.

“Fireball.”

30 mana from taken from me and a sort of big fire ball flew and burnt the monsters to a crisp. After that more monsters started to spawn at a rapid rate.

Do these monsters spawn after I kill some of them? Wait didn't they spawn when I just froze some of them? But none of them spawned when I was in the storage room. So....I better get in another storage room before more get created.

I quickly ran and found another storage room to hide now for a while. I tried not to look into the actual content of the stuff since I might lose something important or worse to those unspeakable things.

How much more do I have to do......no rest.....constant danger.....man I regret this.....

Part 4 – At the limit

Its been I think 2 days or was it 3 days since the fourth phrase of the training started. And I barely got any sleep in this period. Seriously! Every 10 minutes I had to run to a new room! At one stage I got a message that told me to go to sleep! How can I sleep! If I sleep then I'll be killed.

During this period that I like to call hell training, I gained a total of 22 levels leaving me at level 25 which was pretty good for 2 or 3 days of killing monsters. One thing I noticed is that the experienced I gained in percentage hasn't changed even though I levelled up so many times. Wait! Did those two rig this so the monsters scale up to my level?! That explains why they've been getting faster and stronger recently.

Bang Bang Bang

Was it time for me to run into another room again? For some reason, despite their increase in power, it still takes them 10 minutes to break down a door. Did those two take pity on me and strengthened the door for me as well? Its like they gave me the antidote to the poison they feed me. Damnit! How many times it this happen? Did I reach 100 already? I can't really think....but my concentration stat leaped a lot during this phrase for some reason. The same thing happened with my intelligence stat as well. Shit I have to prepare a spell.....damn I can't think of one right now.....my consciousness is fading.....

Part 5 - Extra Training!

I woke up not to a warm soft bed but to the cold hard stone floor.....was I still in the fourth phrase of the training?

“Oh your awake Eden.”

Warlic is that you? What happened? I can't really remember well.

“Rest some more. Your body and mind are exhausted. Well that's the point of the training so don't worry.”

Don't worry....shit I so tired that I can't even complain now.

“By the way....you failed the fourth phrase.”

Wait What?!

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN I FAILED?!”

“Ah your energy came back.”

Really now?! I spent god knows how long being chased around by things that could easily rip me apart.

“Now now. Calm down. The test was one of endurance. I say you failed in that aspect. In my calculations you should have lasted around a week but you only lasted 2 and a half days.”

Wait...I had to last for a week?

“To fix this I have to give you some Hell training.”

No not the Hell Training

“Wait why do I need Hell training? Mages use magic so what's the point of having anything involving moving our bodies to the point where we will die.”

“A healthy mind lies in a healthy body. I heard that the Church of Freya has a new training method and require some test subje...no volunteers. I'll see you in a week.”

A magic circle appeared under me and I felt some deja vu. Shit! Why does everyone force me to do stuff for them?! I felt my body being pulled a part and reconstructed as I was teleported to an unknown place.

Author's Notes:

- Well true hell is about to appear in the next chapter. A certain 'training tool' will once more appear. Muhahahahahahahahahahahhaha

- I like how I can just troll the main character in every way. It relieves my stress

- Something I realized is that my pace in writing the series is decreasing for some reason :( That means it might take a while before posting the second volume. So from the second volume onwards this will be a weekly series not a daily one.

- Text box spam.....I really had to put a lot of those in this series didn't I....more work for me when posting.

- Word count this chapter is 4346

EDIT: Whoops! Used the wrong title for the chapter. Fixed it.
