Vol.1 Chapter 3 - The Training Begins

Part 1 – Everything leads to training.

“Wait what do you mean I'm weak because of my age?”

I demanded answers since the two of them seemed to be in a world of their own. In this game age doesn't matter much since all players can level up at the same pace or higher if they played enough.

Although those who are older in appearance are often sought more since they seemed more responsible in finishing a quest. But this isn't the problem. These two are arguing that I'm weak because I'm young. There are many cases this game where young players are in the top 100 in terms of levels.

“Like I said, its natural to be weaker than others older than you since they have more experience.” answered Warlic.

And that's the problem I'm having with you guys right now.

“Don't forget about the fact that your weak in all aspects~”

This guy....he's definitely taunting me.

“So how can I get over this weakness of mine?”

Maybe they have some weird drink that makes me 100 times stronger or something. Or they could alter my body make-up for me to be stronger.

“Training”

“Training~”

Ah they said the same thing. I rather not train since its a pain to do. That's why I decided to be a librarian. It was a simple job and I didn't have to do much.

“Will you train me then?” I asked hoping for them to accept.

“No.”

“Nope~”

Again they have the same answer. The two are polar opposites and yet they agree on this.

I asked, “Why?”

Warlic explained, “The thing is that we don't exactly have the time to do so. Training takes years and is constant. Also both of us are in...you can say the master level in our field of study. Things that you have to think about are as natural as breathing to us.”

“That still doesn't excuse the fact that you can train me. You guys are stuck here for a while right?”

To two of them looked at each other and said at the same time again, “Its a pain.”

So that was the real reason. Its not like you can't be they don't want to....

“If you want to be stronger I can do it for you~”

Eh....what did Crysero just say?

“Crysero.....I believe your planing to experiment on Eden.”

Experiments are fine to me.

“Yep~”

“So what are you going to do?”

I'm wondering that as well.

“Modify him~”

Cool I can be like a guy from Deus Ex.

“No.”

Warlic clearly rejected the idea. Why? Modification seems fine to me.

“Why not Warlic?~”

Yes why not Warlic.

“If you modified Eden....you'll create a monster that will destroy the world.”

That sounds fine being the destroyer of the wor.....wait destroyer of the world?! What kinds of modification he Crysero planing for me?!

“Eh, is that why? Something so minor.~”

Minor?! This is dealing with the fate of the world you know?!

“I could give him the power to fly, the power to shoot lazers out of his eyes even to make claws come out of his hands~”

That does sound cool but I feel like I'm about to cross copyright laws....

“No. Instead I'll teach him a bit. Only a BIT!”

Warlic accepted training me instead of letting Crysero modify me....how much danger does the world have to be in if Warlic wants to train me? Wait if he's training me than am I his apprentice?

“Hey Warlic if I'm training under you am I your apprentice?”

“No.”

Well all my hopes just disappeared.

“Why not?”

“One apprentice is enough. That one is...impatient. Even more so than you...even though she's half dragon.”

Half dragon....there's such a thing? Sounds interesting to me. Maybe I can meet this half dragon one day.

“Eden your thinking you'll like to meet my apprentice someday right? Don't. Believe me, she's a massive hassle.”

A hassle why? What did this apprentice do for Warlic to say this about her?

“Oh you mean the time when she killed you? Or the time she challenged the elemental lords and almost destroyed the world?~”

Wait she killed you? Almost destroyed the world? What is this madness?!

“All of that was worth the effect to teach her patient.”

Warlic calmly remembered it all before me and it was.....awkward. Wait how did he revive? Wasn't he a NPC?

“Warlic how did you revive?” I asked trying to fill in the holes of what I heard from Crysero's mouth.

“Magic~”

That again...

“No not magic Crysero....even though I could...I had a quick chat with Death before reviving when my apprentice realised that she wasn't strong enough to face the avatars.”

Quick chat with death.......and facing the avatars? Is he referring to the blue creatures from the highly overrated movie or the cartoon series with the Asian boy with a terrible movie adaption that portrayed him as a white kid?

“Doesn't death have a issue with people reviving?” I asked. It would be very strange for a creature named after death not to want people to die and stay dead.

“Not at all. You see death is very complicated since there's a being that represent all death. You see death isn't all fussy with whether people live or die. Whenever someone dies he becomes stronger. Which is why he lets everyone who wants to live revive even though there are some conditions with it.”

Oh that's why. He gets stronger each time someone dies, but won't that mean there will be more and more people living a long life? And what are these conditions.

“Condition such as?”

“Owing him a favour. Of course those who can't will stay dead.”

What?...Death likes people owing him a favour? Ad the next part makes sense. What's the point of making someone owe you a favour when they can't do anything for you.

“Does Death actually check in the favours he gets.” I wouldn't want death knocking on my door and telling me about that favour I owe him...

“Sometimes. When he needs something done.”

Well that makes sense. Death can't exactly go around and do stuff with his job. People will panic and run because 'Death' is here. Though that would be very entertaining to watch.

Part 2 – Magic!

A bit of conversation passed and Warlic was taking me somewhere to start my training. Warlic said that my training would involve me going to the other side of the tower with all the monsters and stuff and fighting them. But I have no means of fighting them. As a level 1 I was the weakest I could be. But I had some stats in intelligence and wisdom which made me more suited to magic than melee combat so Warlic is going to teach me some magic.

We entered some sort of storage room. Well there are a lot of them in this tower. I didn't try to open many of them after the first one....

“So what do I do now” I asked kinda confused.

“Wait. I have to get out the proper tools for you.”

I see, now Crysero had left already to do something that involves the mobs in his side of the tower.

Apparently he was weakening them for me which was nice but since it concerns a madman.....I'm worried.

“Ah! Here it is.”

Warlic had a bracelet in his hand. It was old, rusty and had some writing on it. He handed it to me to wear. After I placed it over my right hand he started talking.

“That bracelet is a ancient tool used when magic was still....well more immature and...more destructive.”

I don't like the sound of that. Why can't everything be peaceful?

“It is used to restrict the wearer by absorbing mana from the body whenever you use a spell. You can say this was also used as punishment for ones that abuse their powers.”

Eh....the training device was used as punishment as well?

“Well it doesn't do much but restrict the amount of mana you can use while casting a spell so don't worry.”

I DO worry! Why am I wearing something that was used as a punishment device?!

“Furthermore I don't want you to destroy or damage this tower too much.”

Ah...so that's the real reason.

“Now for the actual explanation.”

Wait the thing before wasn't the explanation?

“There are two types of mages. The first is the typical stereotype which is the wizard type. They employ powerful magic that wipe out the entire battlefield but they also take a lot of time to cast and need other people to protect them while casting.”

I see...sounds very boring. Staying behind everyone and finishing everything up in one go like a garbage collector.

“The second type is the battle type. While not having as much power as the wizard type, they are much more flexible in combat. They deploy countless small spells in battle to take control of the situation. They are less common since they require more physical ability than most mages would like.”

This class sounds exciting but only having weak spells sounds restrictive. But I can see the lure for some people to run around spamming their spells without worry.

“Now you fall under none of these types since you can't use magic. Yet.”

Yeah thanks...

“Before we decide on your type we need to work on your basics. In short controlling magic.”

I see.

“So how are we going to do this Warlic?” Is he going to make me go through hell or something?

“Simple. We start small and work our way up. One step at a time.”

Wow...that is boring. But its better than Hell training.

“Of course Hell training will be prepared if you fail. Now I'm going to teach you the most basic of the basics now. First focus on making a ball in your hand where the bracelet is.”

Wait what? How am I suppose to do that?! I don't want hell training.

“The bracelet serves to amplify your abilities in focusing so people without talent can train at the same pace.”

So I'm one of the talentless ones. Anyway time to focus. A ball in my hand. A ball in my hand. A ball in my hand.

A ball of light sort of appeared then disappeared in my hand. After seeing it Warlic commented with, “Good! At least you can do that. I have to help Crysero...no check on him for a bit so keep on doing that. Remember the more practice you have the easier it will be later.”

With that Warlic left me to work on my own.

After 2 hours of doing the same thing over and over again. I noticed a couple of things. I gained the stat concentration.

Concentration

The ability to focus on a task. As this stat increase, it becomes easier to do certain actions without being distracted. Increases the speed of casting magic and success rate of spells.

The second thing was that I gained magic mastery.

Magic mastery Beginner Level 1(3%)

The ability to manipulate mana. It serves to increase the ability to cast and learn magic of all kinds.

Increase casting speed by 3%

Increase magic strength by 10%

And the third thing was making these balls of light was getting easier as I go. Now I think about it, how long has it been since I been back at the good old sleeping sheep centre? Is Dan worried? No, rag probably informed him already. Now back to training or I get Hell training.

“Eden I'm back....”

Warlic appeared again after another 2 hours and he was burnt? His longish white hair was turned black and his blue robes were also the colour black now.

“What the hell happened there?” I asked suddenly due to his appearance.

“Don't ask.” So it was that bad eh. You have it rough.

Warlic frowned at the memory of something happening. It was probably Crysero's fault. But on another note what do I do now? I can make this ball of light appear pretty easily now.

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

“It looks like you got the basic down.”

Yeah I noticed that as well. Oh, I have to inform him about the other things I gained as well.

“Yeah I even gained the concentration stat and the skill magic mastery.”

Warlic looked confused. He asked, “What are these things you're talking about?”

Eh? He doesn't know?

“Umm.....its the things you gain after using magic for a bit.”

I really have no idea how I got these things. They just appeared out of nowhere.

“I see....but I still don't get it. How do these things appear. What effects does it have on you. And so on.”

“Well say open status window first...”

I think that was first thing you learn since it was the basic of the basic.

“Open Status Window!”

After Warlic said that he had a couple of expressions passing through his face. Shock, interest, understanding and confusion.

“What is this window that I see with my name on it?”

Ah so it worked for him.

“It tells you your stats.”

“I see....can you see this thing hovering in front of me?”

Not at all. Is there a way to?

“Not unless you share it with me.”

“How do I do that?”

…....I really have no idea. Maybe say share with Eden or allow access to status window or something?

Warlic tried a couple of phases and eventually he got his status window to appear for me.

Status WindowNameWarlicTypeGoodLevelMaximumClassWizardFameN/AInfamyN/ATitleBlue MageStrengthN/AAgilityN/AWisdomInfiniteIntelligenceMaximumStaminaInfiniteVitalityN/AConcentrationInfiniteUnknownN/AOffenceN/ADefenseN/AMagic Resistance99%

What the fuck......seriously......I.....no. I have so much to say about this....

“Warlic your stats seems so weird...”

Man if I take a screenshot of this and post it on the internet...no, people will thing I'm trolling them.

“Yeah I know. How come there's so many N/A for my stats?”

I'm more concerned about why your level is considered maximum. Are you at the point where you can't get stronger or something is stopping you form levelling?

“I think its because your not suppose to be in this world and so it doesn't know what to do with your stats.”

That was the best explanation I had.

“That makes sense but what is this unknown stat?”

How would I know? It says Unknown does it not.

“No idea. Something we can't comprehend perhaps?”

Another one of my small theories.

“Well what does your one look like?”

So he wants to compare his one with mind. Well I don't exactly mind but he may get the wrong impression if I do. I opened my status window which was very very pale in comparison with Warlic's to show it to him.

Status WindowNameEdenTypeNeutralLevel1ClassNoneFame30Infamy0TitleNoneHealth100Mana300Strength11Agility11Wisdom41Intelligence39Vitality10Stamina10Concentration10Offence10Defense10Magic ResistanceNone

“This looks very plain. Except that you have more intelligence and wisdom.”

I know. I've done nothing but read for 3 weeks. Don't blame me. I was lazy.

“Well now we have to get back with the training. Now I want you to move the ball around.”

Great how am I suppose to do that. Imagine it. I better try at least.

I focused on creating the ball first before anything else. After I thought the ball of light was stabilised, I imagined it moving around my hand. Not much happened. The ball of light flickered but stayed at the exact same position.

“Its not working.”

“True. Focus some more. It will eventually move.”

“When?”

“The moment you can focus enough to move it.”

Warlic left to do stuff. And so the second phrase of the training begun. It was even more boring than the first. But with this I could potentially train my concentration stat and magic mastery at the same time. But the problem was moving the damn light ball in my hand. It just won't move. In my rage and impatient I threw my hand to the wall.

Bang

What? Why is the wall damaged. Did I do that? Oh shit. Warlic is going to kill me....or maybe he isn't. My training is progressing due to that and he might prai-

“What was that Eden?! What was that loud noi-”

The two of us stayed silence for a bit. Warlic sighed, pointed his staff to the wall and it fixed itself.

“How did you do that?”

A wall fixing spell would be very useful I imagine.

“Simple magic that involves turning back time.”

That's not simple at all. I still remember how you manipulated time and space at the same time. God damnit. Why is he that powerful?

“It looks like you have made some progress in the training. Keep it up. I still need to adjust the monsters for you. Making them significantly weaker is quite difficult.”

I get it. I'm weak. Now let me torment myself in peace Warlic. God I hope Crysero doesn't come over.

“Did someone think about me?~”

God damnit. This can't any worse.

“Hey Hey what are you doing with the basics of magic?~”

And it just did.

“I'm trying to make the ball of light move. But I have no idea how to do it.”

“Have you tried forcing it to move?~”

Forcing it? Don't you have to imagine it moving?

“Magic doesn't work through imagination alone~”

“I see...thanks.”

“Cya~”

Crysero ran out of the room and I just realised that Warlic was gone as well. Well that doesn't really matter right now. Time to figure out how to use Crysero's advice. How do I force the ball to move. It doesn't work with me imagining it. So I have to use mana to move it? Wait doesn't this bracelet help me control my mana? In that case....

I imagined a force pushing on the ball and it moving left a bit.

Move move move move move move move move. Ah it moved. I finally moved the damn light ball.

“Ah good you finally moved it. That finishes phrase two of the training.”

Wait what?! When and how did Warlic get here.

“Mind you, I didn't leave this room. I simply moved out of your sights. You focusing on the task helped as well.”

So he was spying on me....great.

“What's the next part of the training?”

“Making several of them at one and controlling them at the same time. Simple to say but much  more difficult than you think. I suggest you focus on making two light balls at once first before trying to move them. This task requires you to focus on multiple things at once. Something not many can do without failure. Now then I have to do stuff again.”

Warlic left me to the current task which would take me a while to complete. First of all I tried making two light balls instead of one. The results was two very unstable things floating that doesn't resemble light balls.

This is pretty hard to do. I bet the bracelet is helping a lot. Maybe if I try to make one after the other it would be easier.

I focused on making one light ball and after it appeared I focused on making the other.

BOOM

The first light ball became unstable and exploded in my hand when I tried to make the second one.

You have lost 10 health.

Shit. If things don't do well I might die. Well I can still go on but after a couple more tries I have to rest. Speaking of rest I have to eat. I took out another rye bread which I promptly brought in stacks before and ate two of them to restore my Satisfaction metre back to max. I also took out one of several canteens of water which I also brought and drink a bit of water from one of them. The reason why I brought so much supplies is so if anything happens I won't starve to death. Well at least not immediately. Dan also gave me a free meal occasionally so I won't get sick of the taste of rye bread.

Anyway I have to get back in task. If I lose focus on one ball it'll explode. That's great information for me. It'll serve as a reminder to not lose focus on one of them. I created another light ball in my hand and started to try and create another one without letting the first one explode. The results was the same.

You have lost 10 health.

Really....this is going to take a while.

Author's Notes:

- After several hours of sleep, I'm finally awake. This chapter was 3675 words long.

- Also I decided two things. I'll post once a day and I'll lock each topic after each new chapter is posted. Why I'm doing this when I've already written a whole volume you say? Writing this stuff takes time and sometimes I don't have enough time to write a chapter a day and I already decided to write volume by volume before posting each one.

- On another note a certain ninnin wanted me to post part by part. You know how this series doesn't have the page break in the middle of the story right? I replaced it with sub-headings which are the parts. Imagine waiting a whole day to see a couple of lines posted as the next part.
