The first thing John did upon gaining consciousness was looking to see the state of his soul.
He looked up and found something quite disturbing.
He could no longer see his soul.
"I see... perhaps my brain structure in my last body was changed by the seizure."
"That is truly disappointing."
"But this body was clearly dead... have I acquired the abilities from those creatures?"
Now was not the time to test it out.
A servant came in... and looked at John in shock.
"Xian? You are alright?"
John immediately tried to go through the vague remnants of memories he had inherited.
But it seemed as if they were locked away tightly.
"I'm not alright... where am I?"
"The master is on his way!"
Soon there was a crowd in Xian's room.
John thought secretly.
"So this is my father? The patriarch of the Wang Clan."
Doctors were soon doing various test.
John thought his identity would need to be discarded right away.
Because they had took some of his blood.
He thought they would notice his insane regeneration.
But unexpectedly... nothing happened.
Just like in his previous life.
The abilities seem to be inactive.
"Interesting. I suppose I can keep this identity."
Soon the doctors spoke:
"Your son is in good health! There isn't a single thing wrong with him."
"Why was he in a coma earlier then!?"
"We aren't sure... perhaps he had too much to drink?"
"..."
John spoke:
"Father... my memories are like a fog. I don't remember mu-."
His father then slapped him.
"I am your teacher before your father. Do not disrespect your elders."
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Yes. Teacher."
"It seems you need to be re-educated. I can't wait to find the people who did this to you! Do you remember who you went drinking with?"
"No..."
"It was probably that damn Du family!"
"You are not to leave your room for the next month. I hope that memory problem won't effect your performance on the examination. I will have experts come and teach you to help fill in the gaps. Do not lose us face!"
"Yes..."
John then spent three months relearning how to read and write.
He learned a few facts about the world he was in.
He decided to adopt Xian as his name (for now).
He was originally a scientist in his last life.
So he was quite good at studying.
During the three months he was studying.
He had been constantly trying to control his immortality.
He found out that he may have actually unlocked it in his last life.
He just never 'turned it on'.
He could enable/disable his immortality trait.
It was more then that though.
There was a sort of different level of control to it.
Almost like accessing different parts of your memory.
In theory, he could allow himself to die.
So he could choose when to heal or even the area he wanted to heal.
This made sure he was never exposed.
He may be immortal.
But if every cell is destroyed.
He will be screwed.
In this way, he was able to essentially make a phylactery.
How he did this was by taking a bit of his blood and putting it in a vial.
He wasn't sure if it would work.
But theoretically, if his entire body was vaporized.
He would revive from the cells in the vial that he had hidden.
He didn't make just a single one.
He used his fathers money to buy out three houses.
He made sure to hide a vial in each of them.
This is the emergency back-up.
He could feel a deep connection with the vials.
He could through instinct feel their location.
So he was sure this would work.
He felt he wasn't far off from being able to discard his body whenever he wanted.
Things were going well.
Until the rebels attacked.
The massacred the people in his city.
His father was killed right in front of him.
His entire clan was wiped out.
He wasn't spared either.
They killed him...
But unfortunately for them.
He is deathless!
Immortal!
He had been practicing his abilities.
He had gotten a firm grasp of what he was capable of.
Since he could choose the location to heal.
He could revive at one of the vials that served as a phylactery for him.
The vial burst as he reformed.
"The city is enduring a massacre. I may be immortal. But I have no true power. I can't fight an army."
Xian was just a scientist in his past life.
While he did have a little combat experience from dealing with strangeness.
It was hardly applicable here.
He changed into a set of clothes and put on a mask.
He had prepared for a situation similar to this.
He stayed in his house until night time.
He tried to leave the city through the gateway.
But it was heavily guarded.
He scaled the city walls.
There was no way to the other side without jumping.
Such a fall would kill or seriously injure anyone.
But Xian didn't care.
He jumped, breaking his legs.
His leg bones snapped back in place as he sat down on the ground.
They then completely recovered.
He then began to run.
Thanks to his immortality.
He had endless stamina.
It was just his willpower that was lacking.
He wasn't used to such strenuous exercise.
He made it into the wilderness.
He unfortunately got thoroughly lost.
Like seriously lost.
For six months he wondered alone in the wilderness.
No access to clean water.
Barely any food.
The energy that kept him going came from his very soul.
He didn't know this exactly.
But if energy can neither be created or destroyed.
The energy had to have a limit right?
What if he ran out?
Would he truly die then?
He shook his head dispelling these intrusive thoughts.
He had thoughts of letting this body die and reviving at the city now.
Afterall.
The military wouldn't let the rebels just do whatever they wanted.
Enough time had passed.
But he could feel that his vials were moved.
Somebody had clearly found them.
Who knew what sort of experiment they were doing to them?
Another month passed.
He could no longer feel any connection with his vials.
Something had happened to them.
His clothes were tattered.
His hair was in a mess.
But he found a village.
After months of running and no sleep.
He was completely exhausted.
When he got to the entrance of the village.
He directly passed out.
