2: Chapter 35: The Divergence Department

John was unfortunately not able to edit the calamity realm like a program like he did with other realms and formations. It was a different beast in itself.

However. This realm worked more off 'feelings' then logic. To someone like John, this was a nightmare. Imagine trying to write with your mouth. Imagine trying write using your feet. It may be hard at first. But eventually, you'll be able to pull it off.

So John was randomly adjusting his will. Waving it like one would wave their hands in the dark looking for a switch to turn the lights on. He was hoping to find the proper 'feelings'.

Through his experiments. He developed something he called a 'Death' link.

This allowed him to use a sorting algorithm to retain focus on a diseased body. Basically, it was useful for his next experiment.

You see. The calamity realm was like a massive controller of reality. It could tap into information even overgods didn't have access to.

This is a bit complicated. But it allowed John to see multiple universes. With every decision ever made and every outcome was within this scope.

This is why he was able to see alternate versions of the body's he had taken over. Or even alternate versions of the entities housed in the calamity realm. It was truly infinite.

He was looking at the information of alternate universes.

These universes worked off a calculation. Their beginning and end all happened at once. Time as John knew it operated completely on a different level then a human can perceive it.

If John truly mastered his concept. He could adjust both the past and future through his present. He needed to acquire a perspective that wasn't human.

So John's plan to use a pendant to link souls was flawed from the start. He would just be getting reincarnated into a body that should already exist.

This body would also have infinite versions of itself, versions that weren't born with John's will.

Not to mention he was using the soul of someone else to do this. His logic was very flawed. But he had no idea the true power he was wielding.

Right now, he may be blinded by darkness, feeling around for a light switch.

John wished to create a 'unique' body. A body that had no origin. A body that could also exist outside of the calamity realm.

For that. He would need insights into soul. Insights he could get from this little experiment of his.

He however didn't find that specific switch... yet!

1097's POV:

I have been waiting for this moment since I was a child. Here in the Divergence Department. We are raised to be prepared for such events of destruction.

I had no parents growing up. I was born from a vat.

When I was growing up, I was constantly brainwashed and trained to be the perfect human. From my missions, I have seen all sorts of supernatural phenomenon.

Some of the items left by gods have various odd abilities. Normally all of them have some weird quirk. But also a severe weakness.

I have seen things that would make the strongest go insane.

But never have a seen such an entity of destruction. A portal from another world? This was bordering on the line of fiction.

But I am prepared.

I put on my mechanical suit.

In hidden compartments are artifacts from the times of the great 'divergence'. When Wuji died and communication between the gods and mortals was severed.

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

The satellites were calculating the position of Yz'yze.

In the mechanical suit, 1097 could see various holograms in front of his eyes. Analyzing the state of his suit. As well as the location and possible contingency plans for dealing with this new anomaly.

The ceiling opened up and 1097 took to the skies.

----------------------------------------

Yz'yze was casually going around and looking for the perfect human to pass the pendant to. He had only destroyed a few cities.

It seemed the humans were quite hostile to him.

The military had tried to kill him. But their attacks merely tickled him. He watched in amusement at their antics.

It felt quite good to have a world to himself.

He then saw somebody flying at him. They were covered in some sort of metal suit.

He laughed and was about to flick them into space.

But they vanished, and then when he saw them again. They were already within range to do an attack. Even missiles had hardly done anything to him.

But after getting punched. Yz'yze felt something was weird.

He touched his face and looked on in shock. There was blood on his hands.

"How interesting..."

So began a hidden fight that humanity would never know about. The Divergence Department was a heavily guarded secret after all.

On the surface. They were thought to just be an intelligence agency for the government. But below the that, they were truly the guardians of the world.

All sorts of debuffs and weird curses were launched at Yz'yze.

But Yz'yze seemed resistant to most of the effects.

1097 wasn't alone. He had the hopes of all of humanity on his shoulders. He was only one of many super soldiers grown by the department. He wasn't a scientist. So he didn't have access to the most destructive artifacts.

Soon his back-up arrived.

But the enemy proved to be almost invulnerable. Attacks that should of liquified his organs were brushed off.

1097 had an item called 'D-344'.

It could kill the target regardless of their defenses. All one needed was contact with the other person. The catch was, the user would die as well.

Yz'yze was quite arrogant and didn't even try to dodge a bear hug from 1097.

Yz'yze felt danger for some reason and tried to throw him off him. But it was too late. The intelligence in Yz'yze's eyes faded.

He then dissipated as if he never existed in the first place. A pendant dropped to the ground. 1097 also died.

As his life flashed before his eyes.

He remembered a promise he had made to an old friend.

"I can't die here!"

"One more second. Just one more second!"

He struggled as his allies watched him.

Sadly, willpower alone wasn't enough to stop the effect of D-344.

1097 lost his life and began to fall from the sky. His allies caught him and recovered D-344 as well as as the new artifact from that entity.

It was classified as D-877.

It was classified as too dangerous to be studied. So nobody was allowed contact with it. They even used a special artifact to transport it, so it wouldn't come into contact with any targets.

D-877 was stored in a vault for many years.

Centuries in this world were only seconds in his universe. So John wasn't in too much of a rush. He was instead extremely impressed with the technology he had briefly seen during the transport process.

Three hundred years later. A mythological being had started to cause chaos in some cities. It was originally easily handled by the department.

But what they didn't know was that this beast wasn't a natural creation. It was genetically engineered by another group that hoped to infiltrate the base where they stored such creatures.

There were over 300 artifacts held in the main base of the department. They obviously didn't put all their eggs in one basket. There were multiple bases around the world.

Information was heavily confidential. But an employee with high clearance had carelessly left important documents on the chip in their brain.

They were kidnapped and the chip was hacked. Leaking extremely sensitive information.

There was a item called 'D-010' that reversed the aging process effectively making the person immortal. But it also required the user to have skin to skin contact, always to wear it as a ring.

This item seemed to have no weird influences beside reversing the person's age. So it was heavily coveted.

This was among the first artifacts discovered and it had been studied and was deemed not dangerous. But the leader of the group that wanted to infiltrate the department was after this and a few other items.

The beast's true capabilities was hidden. It was only after it was stored in a special prison that it showed its true power.

It should've been able to break out and cause havoc. But the department had existed for so long, not because of just their strength. But because of how they handled weirdness with utmost caution.

The beast barely caused any damage in the end of the things and became another thing in the department.

Creatures weren't labeled the same way as items. As items generally lasted much longer and didn't change. But creatures on the other hand often died from age.

So they at most were given random names. Security was also less important when it came to them. Because if they escaped they would just be captured again. All members of the divergence department, including the things they captured. Were injected with tracking chips.

You must remember that the base soul used in D-877 was made from a god with 100% comprehension in luck.

This luck caused a chain of reactions with multiple items causing another item in the facility to blow up with over a megaton of force. This was the biggest loss the department had suffered in history.

Not only did so many items get destroyed from the explosion. Almost all the researchers had been killed and everything had become a mess of rubble.

D-877 naturally was perfectly fine. As it was hand crafted by a god.

A fireman unknowingly picked it up in the rubble, The public didn't know what exactly the Divergence Department did. So he didn't suspect anything. He packed it away and planned to give it to his wife. As for stealing? Nobody would notice a simple necklace being gone!
