Chapter 29-How Strong is he?

“That went better than I thought,” said Yara with a slight grin.

“No, no, it did not. That’s not what I wanted at all,” said Cora, slightly irritated.

“We were looking for answers about the body enhancement skill, but instead, you got us a free ticket for Khyrum,” said Cora disappointedly.

“And to make matters worse, now I owe Nox a favor of sorts,” she sighed.

“It would have been fine if he said he didn’t know or had no answers. We could have just walked away after that. But not now…” she said while starting down Yara.

Yara could tell her sister was not very happy at the moment.

“Cora, yes, it might have been my fault that Nox misunderstood, but isn’t this for the better?” she said, trying to spin the results in her favor.

“I mean, now Khy doesn’t have to worry about overworking himself to try and get into the strike team. With his spot already secured, he might even have more time to spend with you,” she said as she tried to convince Cora.

Cora looked at her sister. She could tell what she was trying to do but felt she might have a point.

With the spot already secured, Khyrum did not have to work extra hard; maybe he would be so happy that he would agree to go out with her, she thought.

“Hmm, I know you're just trying to weasel yourself out of this situation, but there might be some truth to what you are saying,” she said thoughtfully.

“Let's go talk to Khyrum tomorrow and see what he says. Then I’ll tell you if you're off the hook or not,” she said to her sister with a light smile.

Yara felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up when she heard Cora. She wanted to speak, but no words came out.

As the twins walked away from Training Ground 1, in a weight room inside an abandoned training bldg, a young man set Indian style on the floor.

A dazzling green light spun clockwise on his chest. The light looked like a bunch of green-colored sparklers spinning in unison in the middle of the chest.

Khyrum sat on the floor, holding the angels’ wings. If anyone else was present, they could tell the wings seemed to produce a very light golden hue. It was faint but visible in the dark room.

“I’ve been sitting here and going over this skill sequence for the last hour or so. I wonder if anything has been passed on to the wings,” I thought.

With that, he brought his concentration to a halt. He then opened his eyes and peered down at the angel wings he had in his hand.

It was dark in the room, so he could only see the shimmer of the silver wings, but even looking at it, he could tell something was different.

“It might be as dark as night in here, but I can see a slight golden shimmer on these wings,” I said.

He started walking towards the main training area. He was still wondering how he would test out the charm.

“I don’t recall ever hearing of charms or enchantments, so I doubt we would have any way to test them,” I thought.

Thinking of this, he could only pull out his PLE and try to do some research on this matter.

“Let me see what I can find.”

I was researching through several websites on government and school databases but needed help.

“Just as I thought, I have not seen any such charms announced or found anywhere. Maybe if they do exist, the person or institution that found them is keeping the information extremely private.”

“When I return to Rayong, I will get with Roy and see if he can help.”

It was 6:45 p.m., so Khyrum packed his things and returned to the guesthouse.

Walking back, I could only think of what this charm could do.

“Man, I hope there is a way to check on this thing,” I kept thinking.

I wasn’t completely dumb to the idea of making money with this new technique, considering that it would work, of course. This was one of the reasons why I decided to try it.

I told myself, “If I can’t make money on the strike team anymore, this may be the replacement. If I can make charms with enhanced skills, man, I could make a killing selling them.”

Once I got home, I put away my things and hid the wings in a safe place—the freezer in his kitchen refrigerator, somewhere no one would look.

“That should keep it safe for now,” I said.

As I got to school the next day, two girls with almost identical faces were already waiting for me inside the classroom.

“Khy, good morning,” said Yara, yawning.

Cora looked at her and couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed by her sister.

“Really, Yara, you didn’t get enough sleep last night,” she said in a questioning tone.

“Ahh, I only got about eight hrs. of sleep last night, sis. Leave me alone. I usually need about 10 to 12 hours of beauty sleep,” she answered.

“Beauty, sleep, huh,” said a female voice from the doorway.

All three turned to look, only to find Eva standing at the door.

“I can vouch for that, Yara; we beautiful girls need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep every night,” she said while looking at Khyrum.

"For God's sake, I didn’t say anything to begin with, so why is she looking at me?" I told myself.

There was no way I was going to start right now.

I returned to my desk, sat down, and opened my PLE.

“Khyrum, don’t ignore me; that is so rude,” said Eva, glancing my way.

“I’m not ignoring anyone; I just don’t want to be part of this conversation,” I said.

“What! You don’t want to be in a conversation with the three most beautiful girls in the first-year class,” she said incredulously.

“You know how many guys would die to be in your shows right now, Khyrum,” she said in a haughty tone.

“Well, maybe you should throw them a lifeline and have them take my place. I said it before; I’m not interested in having this conversation,” I said, tuning her out.

Eva's face went from Red to Maroon to Purple in anger as she couldn’t believe Khyrum’s attitude. Every guy was nice to her and wanted to be friends with her, so why not him?

As she tried to reign the conversation back to her, she found that Khyrum was no longer paying attention to her.

“This can't be!” she said as she walked to her desk.

Meanwhile, the twins were laughing inside at how things had turned out between Eva and Khyrum.

“Serves her right,” whispered Yara to Cora.

“Yeah,” she also whispered.

“Let's head over and let him know what Nox said. I’m sure that will brighten his day,” said Yara.

Cora just nodded as both twins got up from their desks and approached Khyrum.

As the twins moved, Eva couldn’t help but watch.

“Hey Khyrum, we have some news for you,” said Cora in a caring tone.

“News?” I said.

“Yeah, we talked to Nox yesterday about, you know what, and he agreed to put you on the freshmen strike team,” said Cora while watching Khyrum to gauge his reaction.

“He said that?” I questioned.

“I haven’t heard anything about being asked to be on the strike team. Are you sure he was not just pulling your chain?” I said.

“I’m sure he is not kidding. He said to let you know to report to him after the holiday break,” continued Cora.

“Yeah, he said you would join him on strike team three,” added Yara.

I couldn’t fathom what these girls had done to pull this off if it was true. I hadn’t heard anything about this, so it still had to be seen.

But even if it was true, there was no way I could join the strike team now, but I could say that. That would make me look like a hypocrite in front of the girls.

“Girls, let's see what happens after the holiday break, okay?” I said with a slight smile.

Both twins could only nod as they could not understand my nonchalant demeanor.

Seating in the corner, Eva had overheard the entire conversation.

“Wow, he already got offered a spot, and the tryouts haven’t even happened yet,” she said in total surprise.

“Is he that strong? You couldn’t tell by the way he acts,” she continued.

“I know I’ll ask Brandon; as they both live in the same household, he should know how strong Khyrum is,” she said while staring at Khyrum with a gleam of interest in her eyes.
