Chapter 10- Beast or Bear?

The beast moved forward at incredible speed; I felt like running away as soon as I saw it approach me. But suddenly, something changed; a voice in my head said Enhanced Skin.

Without thinking, I called up the skill with the beast almost on top of me. In the next instance, I found myself blocking this huge paw with my right arm.

When I realized what had happened, I couldn't help myself. My face said it all, with a grin from ear to ear.

I had just used the skill again!

“I don’t think it can be this strong,” I told myself, “I never practiced or even studied this skill.”

I wasn’t physically fit, implying that I was not very good at sports or any type of physical activity. I have gotten better lately due to all the hunting, but still, compared to the beast's arms, mine looked like toothpicks.

Unbeknownst to me, this version of Enhanced Skin I had mastered was considered a lost art. I only found out about it later in school. It had not been seen in over 500 years. It was only recorded in ancient history books and texts, Diamond Scale Skin or DSS for short.

At that moment, I recalled a lesson we had just learned in school, “Accelerated Power Displacement,” which said that if someone had a high enough transcendent gene count from birth. They could start manifesting powers even before they awakened. The higher the gene count, the more abilities they could display at an earlier age.

This was, in theory, only because APD had never been proven, as nobody nowadays possesses powerful genes from birth anymore.

“Is this what our teacher in school was referring to with APD?” I thought.

But before I could think about it anymore, I felt a terrible pressure fall on me; I turned around in time to see the beast lock his gaze on me again.

The beast’s black eyes seemed to glint with unnatural light. He seemed to realize something just now. He turned to look and pounced again with more force. This time, he used both arms as we exchanged blow after blow.

His paws hitting my forearms produced a muffled sound that rippled through the forest. He wanted to overpower me with brute force, and he probably would have succeeded if I had been anyone else.

After going back and forth for about 10 minutes, I knew I was in trouble.

“Man, I can’t keep doing this,” I said, sweating profusely.

“I’m already starting to tire out. If I can’t get away soon, I might end up badly hurt or killed.”

While thinking this, the beast also noticed how tired I was.

It stopped and retreated about 15 ft. The green eyes on the side of the head started to glow. The green lines running from the back of his head all the way down his back also started glowing incandescent green.

“What new hell am I witnessing here?” I asked myself as I observed this creature.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

He stretched out his arm and opened his paw, palm facing me. Instantly, a small wind vortex started to form in the front of his palm.

“Oh crap, you have to be joking with me?” I exclaimed with wide-open eyes.

I could not figure out what this animal was doing.

“How the hell is this bear able to do that?”

“I’m screwed now for sure.”

But before I could do anything else, the beast flicked his wrist; this reminded me of when Roy did the same thing.

“Oh Shit, Air Blade,” I said in total disbelief. I only had seconds to react and make a lifesaving decision.

I thought about lunging forward and lying flat on the floor to avoid the air blade. Although this would put me at a disadvantage, there was an excellent chance I could do it.

I was about to dive into the ground when, for no reason I could think of, the second TGene DNA Sequence popped into my head.

“GUG CAU GUC AUC…” the DNA pattern flashed before my eyes.

I looked around for a split second, “Where is this freaking pattern coming from?”

I thought about it for what must seem like an eternity, but it wasn’t more than a second or two.

When the air blade was about 3 feet away, I picked up my right arm and screamed, “Wind Wall.”

Those were the only words that popped into his mind without knowing why.

Instantly, a vortex of wind that looked like a cascading waterfall appeared before me.

There was a loud noise as the airblade crashed into the wind wall, but nothing else happened. The air blade dissipated as it hit what seemed to be an impregnable steel wall.

“Wind Wall” was another advanced protection spell not seen in centuries. OWs or Supers, as we are referred to today, need many years of experience only to summon air shields for protection; it was hard to train to use them.

I was shocked and couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear again as I just realized what happened.

“Did I just pick up another power?” I ask myself in a foolish tone.

I look like an idiot just for a moment, with that stupid grin.

"How do I check my skills?" I wondered aloud. I needed to check something about the skill I just picked up.

"Oh, Shit!" I said, almost falling.

I could not believe what I had just seen while mentally checking my skills. I grin mischievously as I look up at this overgrown teddy bear.

Sensing a slight chill on its back, the beast takes a step back to try and run for it, but before he can.

I’m already flying towards him; after casting Wind Walk without thinking.

In the next instance, I’m right in front of this beast. Not even thinking, I punched out with his right hand, still wrapped in DSS, hitting the beast in the chest.

BOOM!

A loud boom is heard as my fist finds its mark in the beast’s chest plate on the left side.

The beast is sent back, flying like it was shot out of a cannon. It goes about 30 feet before it crashes into the ground. It gets up, holding its chest. It cries out in pain and anger as he knows he is hurt.

Its face now contorted in rage. All 6 of its eyes now focus on me. They glow with menacing hues of green and red.

But before the beast can counterattack, I’m already coming in to finish it. Using Wind Walk again, I go up about 20 feet in the air.

This is one of the advantages of the Wind Skill, which I just mastered a few minutes ago. Unlike air blade or air shield, which can only be learned individually due to gene restriction, if you master the wind element, you can learn all the wind techniques. The only thing is that you have a good understanding of the techniques used to switch between the skills.

Now, 20 feet above the beast, I use gravity to accelerate my fall toward the beast. I stick my right arm out as I start to fall. I look like Superman from the historical comic books I had seen in school.

As I get closer, I target the beast's head. As my fist makes contact, I don’t feel any resistance at all. My fist lands squarely on the beast’s skull with so much force that it makes the body spin head over heels several times in the air before crashing down to the ground with his head completely crushed. The beast is instantly killed.

Surprised and scared simultaneously, I study the beast, trying to figure out if it’s dead.

“It’s Dead,” I say as I sigh in relief.

It had to be known that I had spent a lot of energy in this fight. I was dog-dead tired, as they say.

After looking at it for a while longer, I say,

“Damm, I hope Roy has closed shop yet. I need to sell this bear asap!”
