The Last Man Standing

Solum (14.12.9978 AS)

Ai was standing next to the walls of the barrier erected by Tristan, as soon as the fight had started. She was holding her shaking hands in front of her chest, trying to contain the trembling of her body. Her eyes were filled with tears, but she wouldn’t allow herself to cry. No, she couldn’t cry if her friends were fighting the fight of their lives, a fight to live and death, a fight like the one she hoped never to be part of.

Ai didn’t know what was going on, all she knew was that the ones fighting were using magic beyond someone their age should be able to use, especially Tristan and the new comer girl. Both of them were using high end spells to move faster than anything Ai knew. Every swing of their swords filled the air with as much mana as needed to cast her Fire-Octopus-Spell.

The fight in front of her was finally reaching its climax, when the guy Tristan had killed a few times already stood up and ran with all his might towards his companions.

-But he was too late.

“Princess!!!” Ai heard the young man cry out as Tristan appeared in front of the girl lying next to her friend. As Tristan was setting up for the last swing of his sword during the battle, Ai felt the air rapidly change around the Princess.

“Get out of there!” She roared, trying to get the attention of her friends, but they didn’t seem to have noticed her warnings. Without thinking a second time she activated her Fire-Octupus-Spell and tentacles made out of blue flames, shoot from under her legs.

Her fiery tentacles moved as fast as they possibly could, almost matching Tristan’s earlier speed. They flew past Viktor who was trying to prevent Tristan from taking Clair’s head and finally reached Laura’s left leg.

Once Ai had caught Laura she pulled her friend with all her might, putting all her efforts of not burning her, towards her.

“Whatttt?!” Laura screamed as she was being pulled towards Ai with an immense speed. Soon she realized what was going on and started complaining towards her friend. “Hey, I wasn’t done with-“

A deafening sound interrupted Laura’s complains.

“Tristan!!” Ai screamed at the cloud of dust in front of her, while slowly falling on her knees not being able to contain her tears anymore. “I. am. sorry. I. could. not. reach. you. in. time.” she whispered only for her and Laura to hear.

The earsplitting sound came from the magic, Clair had activated trying fend off Tristan. A mass of lightning had struck were Laura and Tristan were standing ready to end the live of the two girls.

Clair used this opportunity take Sariel’s body out of the battlefield to a secure position, soon joined there by the pale Viktor.

“Your majesty, are you ok?” He asked while panting, although, he was immortal and posed an unnatural amount of mana, he had reached his limit. He had never had to use so many high level spells and also have to regenerate his complete body in one fight.

“Yes, can I entrust Sariel to you?” Clair asked mindlessly trying to look past the cloud of dust she had just created, with one of her strongest spells.

‘Kyaaahh, I feel so stupid! I came here to save him, and then he tries to kill me! - And in the end, I was the one who killed him. I bet Bella knew he wasn’t an innocent Wild Elder but a Demon, that’s why she reacted that way back in then. So stupid, just so stupid of me! And now I’ll probably also be punished for this! – SO STUPID! – But thanks to me coming here, those two are still alive.’

Clair smiled bitterly, being able to sve her ‘friends’ was nice and all, but having to kill the one she had set out to safe was a hard for her to take in.

“Hey!”

Clair froze as she heard a male voice coming from the cloud of dust. ‘Impossible no one should be able to survive such an attack – unless they are on the same level as that magic, or even higher.’ Clair held her breath as she was trying to find the owner of the voice inside of the cloud of dust and dirt.

“Don’t you know you aren’t supposed to use magic above Super Devil level in Terra?” Tristan voice pointed out with a bored tone.

“-” Clair didn’t know how to answer. She knew she was at the disadvantage, both her friends weren’t able to fight anymore, and wasn’t confident she could win against that monster, being able to keep his calm after receiving such an attack.

“Trist, you’re ok?” She could hear two female voices in chorus. ‘Shit, shit, shit! The other girl is ok too? This is bad! Maybe, mom was right and I shouldn’t have been allowed to leave the palace yet! But I can’t let this end, not yet!’ Clair stood up and started to chant the most complex spell she had up her sleeve. It wasn’t her strongest spell, but it was still stronger and its area of effect was bigger than the one she had used to safe Sariel and herself earlier.

“Yeah, I’m fine!” Tristan said as he jumped backwards. ‘Sorry partner, I let you get hit by such a spell.’ Schattenklinge apologized. ‘It’s just it’s been so long since I had such a formidable opponent and I made the rookie mistake of not counting on the possibility of a magic spell.’

‘No problem, but be more careful next time, my body feels all sore thanks to you now.’ Tristan responded as she leapt towards his companions. ‘Yeah, I’m sorry I had to use shadow’s magic to protect your body back there. Who would have thought that someone so formidable with the sword could chant a spell of that caliber in such a situation’ Schattenklinge pointed out with admiration.

“Can you still go?” Tristan asked Laura without paying attention to Schattenklinge’s cheap excuses for his carelessness.

“Yes.” Laura gave a short answer.

“Good, and thanks Ai, for warning me there, without you I would have been a goner.” He showed a thumbs up to Ai, who wiped her tears from her face and answered him with a bright smile. “You bet I did! You can count on me and leave me cover your back!”

“Sorry, I don’t have time for explanations, but would you mind staying behind a little bit? Our enemy isn’t someone to be underestimated and to be honest, your capabilities aren’t on par with hers.” Tristan said with a serious voice, while Ai looked a little disappointed, but still acknowledged Tristan’s warning and nodded silently.

Tristan smiled at her satisfied and created a barrier around Ai, using the same crystal he had used at the start of the fight. Then he turned towards Laura. “I have reason to believe we’re fighting against Princess Clair Licht, the daughter of Empress Clarisse Licht, the ruler of Lunae.”

“Isn’t that claim a little too far fetched? I mean what would the Princess of the Seraphs be here in Terra fighting against us? I don’t know much about Seraphs, but I don’t think they would let the heir of their Empress roam freely through Terra.” Laura answered.

“I know, but… Well, never mind, then, just be careful around her, earlier she used Low Demon Lord tier magic, when she defended herself and her companion.” Tristan answered with a serious voice.

“Demon Lord level? Isn’t it forbidden to use that type of magic here in Terra?”

“Yeah, I hope she doesn’t use it again or the barrier won’t hold and we might end up exposed and you know what that would mean?”

“Yeah, so should I cover you? I’m not confident I can keep up with her movement for a melee fight” Laura looked at her crushed left leg.

“Good, I’m counting on you.” Tristan smiled. “Can you speed me up, I got a bad feeling about the amount of mana she’s gathering up there.”

Laura nodded and activated her active and changed the gravity of the air around Tristan, allowing him to move more aerodynamically through the room.

“Ready?” She asked Tristan, who gave her the thumbs up. After receiving the signal she once again activated her active creating a magic circle that would suck Tristan towards the place where Clair and her companions were.

‘I’m counting on you!’ Tristan said to Schattenklinge, who once again took control of Tristan’s body allowing Tristan even faster than before.

Clair finally ended the chant of her spell, and smiled satisfied at the spell she was about to activate, when she suddenly saw Tristan shadow shooting through the cloud of dust towards her, his swords pointed at her.

“What?!”

Luckily for Clair, her spell activated before Tristan could reach them.

The last thing Tristan saw, the gigantic magic circle on the ground-

**BOOOOM**

Once again, Clair’s view was filled with a cloud of dust. Just now she had performed a High Serpah Lord spell that had consumed almost all of her mana. She had used it as a last resort to make sure she and her friends survived the battle. She smiled received as she fell exhausted to her knees.

The barrier around them was blinking in blue and red at some parts even allowing her to see the real world.

“Cheats! I call cheats!” Tristan, who was hidden by Schattenklinge in a cocoon of shadows exclaimed before using his magic to dissolve the cloud of dust. “Like I said, you aren’t allowed to use magic above Super Devil tier in Terra!” He once again roared at Clair, who started trembling all over, tears dropping down her pale cheeks.

Tristan looked behind and found the trembling Ai inside the barrier he had created earlier. She looked even more confused than earlier. In front of her was the unconscious body of Laura. With the new skill he had learned he quickly checked if she was still alive before once again turning towards the helpless Seraphs in front of him.

“Look at the barrier she won’t hold any longer and then some humans might witness me killing your highness’ friends.” Tristan said and marched towards the three seraphs.

“How do you know?” Clair asked curious.

“I know everything.” Tristan smiled confidently. “And also that idiot over there gave it away calling you princess.”

“Oh.” Clair stopped trembling, for some strange reason she felt at ease while talking to this demon, even though he was about to kill her and her friends.

“So, you really are Clair the Holly princess, to be honest, I’m impressed by your strength.” Tristan said. ‘If it wasn’t for Schattenklinge, you would have been killed at least three times… I have still have ways to go and a lot to train if one day I want to be able to fight against Fors.’

“May I have the honor of knowing the name of my killer?” Clair asked resigning herself to her death.

“Tristan, Tristan Halblicht.” Tristan said, continuing the walk that felt for him almost like an eternity.

“Tristan, what a nice name, nice to meet you. My name is Clair Licht, but you already know it…” Clair smiled coy, completely forgetting the situation she was in.

“Well, I read about you in a book about the society of the other races.” Tristan answered. “And don’t worry, I won’t kill you, having someone in your position owe me her life is more worth than killing you and turning an entire race against me.”

“So you’ll also spare my friends?”

“I’m sorry” Tristan finally reached them and got ready to kill the defenseless Viktor and Sariel.

“Oh.” Clair covered her mouth with both her hands.

“GET AWAY FROM THE PRINCESS!” Tristan heard a deep manly voice say, causing him to violently turn towards the owner of the voice and scream “WHAT NOW?”

“Dietrich!” Clair exclaimed happily as she saw the big beardy man trotting towards her.
