“Does someone know what ‘Magic Catalysts’ are and how they work?” the teacher asked towards her class. It seemed like just someone knew the answer. The girl in the second row was frantically waving her hands, so the teacher would ask her to answer the question. Miss Doctri looked bored. “As usual, only Abigail knows the answer. Come on guys! Does someone else want to give it a try?” None of the students reacted to her pleas. “Fine, Abigail please enlighten us,” she said, waving her hand at Abigail.
The school term had started a little more than one month ago. During this period only Abigail had always enthusiastically answered the questions from Miss Doctri. The rest of the students didn’t seem to know the answers or just didn’t want to answer. Like a certain five years old boy, whose only concern right now was to make as much money as fast as possible.
Abigail stood up gave a superior smile towards Tristan and started talking. “Magic Catalysts are supporting elements that help us casting spells. There are three types of catalysts. ‘Gemstones’, ‘Magic Circles’ and ‘Chants’. If it weren’t for the proficiency the three ‘Catalysts’ would be equal. You see, as a demon you can only be truly proficient with one of the three ‘Catalysts’, because the catalysts harmonize with one’s passives.
The reason behind it, is unknown, but Demons with ‘Death Magic’ harmonize the best with ‘Chants’, Demons with ‘Shadows Magic’ harmonize with ‘Gemstones’ as ‘Catalysts’ and finally ‘Chaos Magic’ does harmonize the best with ‘Magic Circles’. Therefore, all three Clans ‘Tod’, ‘Schatten’ and ‘Zerstörung’ have the broadest knowledge about their specific ‘Catalysts’.
‘Catalysts’ filter out unwanted elements from your mana, often those elements hinder you in casting spells out side of your passive’s spectrum.” Abigail went quiet signalizing she was done with her explanation and sat down.
“As always, great job, Abigail.” Miss Doctri said. Abigail had a bright smile on her face as she always did when she was being praised. In her moment of glory Abigail didn’t notice the people in the first row glaring at her. “But what about ‘Elixirs’? Aren’t those Catalysts as well? Miss Doctri asked the class.
As Abigail was about to stand up again and give the answer, Miss Doctri called the name of the boy Abigail hated the most, because no matter what she did to show him her superiority, he wouldn’t be bothered by it. “Say Tristan, are the trees outside more interesting than my magical theory class? Or can you give us an answer to my question?”
Tristan sighed, looked towards Miss Doctri and started his explanation. “’Elixirs’ don’t count as ‘Catalysts’ because ‘Elixirs’ store the mana you have poured into them during their creation. ‘Catalysts’ don’t save anything they are just plain mana filters. This means when you are out of mana a ‘Catalyst’ is useless, but an ‘Elixir’ is still useful. The only down to the ‘Elixirs’ is that they are difficult, pricy and draining to create.” Tristan continued in his thoughts ‘And to answer your last questions, yes, the trees outside are way more interesting than this theory class.’
“See you all can do it if you just try! Very well done Tristan!” Miss Doctri said without realizing who the four people in the first row were glaring at Tristan and Abigail. ‘And she still has no clue why Laura and I don’t want to participate in her class?’ Tristan smiled at the four students in front of him.
Miss Doctri clapped with her hands. “That concludes the theoretical part of today’s lesson. Now let’s move to the practical part. Follow me!” Miss Doctri pointed towards the door and started heading towards the trainings field. “Finally!” Laura said with a wide smile on her face.
“Every single one of these books here contains ‘Demon Level’ spells.” Miss Doctri said while pointing at the shelves full of books on the sides of the trainings field. “You have time till lunch break to find a book with spells you want to learn from. By the way, you aren’t allowed to pick spells that harmonize with your passives.” When she was done speaking all the children started to run towards the shelves. “Abigail and Tristan, can you both come here for a bit?” Miss Doctri walked towards the door of the training room followed by the two.

Once they were outside of the trainings room Miss Doctri started “As you said earlier the reason why we Demons can only specialize with one ‘Catalyst’ is because our passives, but Elders are different in that regard. Elders don’t have a passive, which means no restrictions in choosing a passive. There are even Elders that are proficient with more than one type of ‘Catalysts’. I personally would try to master one type first before going to the next type, but it is up to you.”
She looked towards Tristan. “I know, you aren’t an Elder, but you are a special case since you don’t have a magic type as a passive. Therefore, we will treat you as an Elder in that regard.” ‘You don’t have to rub it in, you know…’ Tristan thought hearing his teacher’s voice. “As I always say try to take things head on. If you do so you might end up changing your fate.” She smiled at Tristan trying to cheer him up. “Now, let’s go back in and choose a book with spells with the ‘Catalyst’ you want to learn for now!” She clapped on her hands like she always did when she wanted the children to do what she had told them.

“Finally!” Laura said, waving her fork around. “We finally are going to learn spells! I thought we would be doing mana concentration exercises for the whole first year!” The past month they had been busy learning how to control the mana flow in one’s body. All they had done during the practical magic lessons had been meditating. Obviously the students disliked the idea of sitting still for ours, so they had were dying to learn real spells.
“I know right!” Abigail answered happily. It was lunch break and the trio was having lunch as they had been doing since the first school day. “I’m also really excited, but Laura, darling would you mind eating a little more like a civilized being instead of a wild beast?” Tristan added with a disgusted voice looking towards Laura, who was busy stuffing pasta into her mouth. Laura swallowed the pasta and blushed. “Shut up! I need the energy for today’s lesson! Anyways, what did that woman want from you this morning?”Tristan, who had recently discovered how fun it was to tease Laura, replied her question.
“You know, the others made jokes on how you two are treated in a special way, when you were gone. You should try and avoid that kind of situations” Laura said with a serious voice. “Yeah, I know.” Tristan said while looking at Abigail. “And you! Try not to stand out so much in class. Even if you know the answer sometimes it is ok not give an answer. I have a really bad feeling about those four.”
“You are just jelly because I’m being praised more by the teacher than you.” Abigail answered without giving Tristan’s warning a second thought. ‘How can be someone so smart, but so stupid at the same time!’ Tristan thought “Yeah, you totally got me, I’m so jealous.” He added with a sarcastic tone. “See, you can’t hide anything from me!” Abigail proclaimed with a wide smile.
---------
After the lunch break the children assembled in the training room. Each of them had already chosen their spells and the catalysts they wanted to specialize in. Four students had chosen to start with ‘Gemstones’ two with ‘Magic Circles’ and one with ‘Chants’.
The only one learning the use of ‘Chants’, was Abigail because she belonged to the ‘Tod’ clan. The main reason why she decided on learning ‘Chants’ was because she didn’t want to feel as an outcast in her own family.
Although, Tristan didn’t like the idea of being a ‘Schatten’ he still learned the use of ‘Gemstones’. The ‘Catalyst’ his clan specialized in. Even if the chances were slim, he still hoped one day to be able to return to his family. Those feelings had grown larger, since he had heard Lamia’s words.
The others had chosen their ‘Catalysts’ according their ‘passives’. Laura and Annemarie had gone with ‘Magic Circles’ and the Lucifer twins and Leo had also gone with ‘Gemstones’.
“Has every one chosen for a book with spells to learn from?” Miss Doctri asked every student nodded. “That’s awesome. In five months you will have a test about the contents of the book you’ve chosen. The test will not only be practical but also theoretical, so please use the time you are given to practice as hard as you can.” She clapped with her hand. “Well then don’t waste your time! If you have any questions you can come to me.” She summoned a novel and a chair, sat down and started to read. While the students started to work through their books.
Although, Bella had told Tristan to learn ‘Telekinetic Magic’ and ‘Resonance Magic’, he had decided to learn ‘Illusion Magic’. Right now he was more in need of a deceiving spell, then spells that would increase his fire power. He had concluded, he needed the ‘Illusion Magic’ to start his own business and make money and to be able to sneak out of the house during the nights, to train himself in his one of his dimensions. He had already tried a few times to sneak out at nights, but Nana had always asked questions on the next morning.
