Chapter 70: The Eye Stealers

Klumpkrump was making her way down the path on the inside left (directly to the right of the leftmost tunnel). It was a very long and winding path and it took her about 4 minutes to reach anything noteworthy. The path opened up into a large, tall, rectangular room. It opened on the long side of the rectangle and it was not on the bottom - instead, it was suspended about 6 meters above the floor on a very weak and crumbly-looking path. Walking on it was probably not the smartest idea.

On the ground below was a very long table that stretched from one end of the room to the other. At the table were 22 bear-sized chairs. At that exact moment, a door opened and 22 bears began filing in. Klumpkrump retreated further into the tunnel to avoid being seen.

What the heck are a bunch of bears doing in this abandoned Lizard Fortress?? wondered Klumpkrump.

Now, before you say anything, I must admit that these bears were not like normal bears. For, you see, each one stood on its hind legs and had one eye. They were cyclops bears! Additionally, they had very fair, nearly square hair.

Upon the table, one of the bears began placing many things, including pears, meat cooked rare, flares, and a game of truth or dare.

The bears soon began eating the pears and meat cooked rare, and they also began to play truth or dare. A conversation quickly began among them.

“Hmm, what fine pears these pears be,” said Bear #1.

“I would know,” said Bear #2, “because I am also eating one of those pears.”

“Thank me,” said Bear #3, “for I am he who made those pears.”

“How does one make a pear?” asked Bear #4.

“By growing them, Bear #4,” said Bear #3.

“Whose turn is it?” asked Ber #1.

“Yours!” said Ber #4.

“Truth or dare, Bear #12?” asked Ber #1.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

“Dare,” said Bear #12.

“Your dare,” began Ber #1, “is to go up on that crumbling path, yes, and walk all the way to the end and all the way back.”

All the bears in the room looked up at the crumbling stone path.

“Easy!” said Bear #12. “It’s easy, easy! Your dares are too easy, I say!”

Bear #12 picked up a flare gun from the table and walked out through the door from whence the bears came. Klumpkrump retreated far down into the tunnel as to not be seen. However, what she didn’t expect was that the way up to the tunnel she was in from the room with the bears was through a door in the tunnel. And that door… was directly behind Klumpkrump!!

“Ahoy!” shouted Bear #12 from behind Klumpkrump, nearly giving her a heart attack. “We have an intruder!”

Klumpkrump ran from Bear #12 in the only direction she could, which was towards the dining room. Soon enough, all 22 bears were surrounding her at the edge of the crumbling path.

“Who be you?” asked Ber #4.

“Uh, I’m allied with the bears!” exclaimed Klumpkrump. “The ones from Bear Stone Planet?”

“You mean those bears?” asked Bear #7.

“The bears who banished us from Bear Stone Planet forever?” asked Bear #6.

“What? Why would they do that?” asked Klumpkrump inquisitively.

“Well, you see,” began Bear #15. “We were members of a secret group known as the Eye Stealers.”

“We stole eyes,” said Bear #12.

“Because we thought that if we stole enough eyes, we could see all the evil in the world and banish it,” explained Bear #9.

“What the heck sort of logic is that??” asked Klumpkrump.

“So then they stole an eye from each of us,” said Bear #4, pointing at his cyclops eye. “Then, the next time the Bearmy went on a mission into space, they took us and abandoned us on a random planet.”

“Which just so happened to be this one!” said Bear #20. “And the lizards saw us and let us live in their fortress.”

“But then they all died off!” said Ber #1.

“And now you are here and we’d be fine with that if you weren’t allied with the bears,” said Bear #12. “So we shall steal your eyes.”

Each one of the 22 bears held up a spoon (for eye stealing) and enclosed upon Klumpkrump. She had no choice but to retreat across the crumbling stone bridge of death.
