Chapter 65: Style

Chapter 65: Style

Once Rick finished healing me, he went and healed Leon. By the end he was wiped the cold sweat on hisforehead. Rick’s mana capacity has to be on another level compared to the average person.

Unfortunately compared to his peers he doesn’t come close, no, he might rival them in mana capacity however his other abilities are for a lack of a better word lackluster.

It’s obvious his lack of athleticism is conceding, but there’s also the fact other students in this academy have the same amount of mana capacity yet all the other fields are better.

There’s a major misconception when it comes to athleticism. You might think you can simply enhance your body to increase speed, bypassing the body’s limitations.

This is wrong.

You cannot change your physical ability by enhancing the body with mana. When you see us seemingly teleport and move at high speeds it’s because we enhance the foot right when we start moving which gives the illusion of moving fast.

If we could increase our body speed then this would be different, building houses would be way easier.

It’s also a matter of practice, you need to be precise when using the technique or you might find yourself going through a wall and things of that sort.

So in the end you still have to move, but a question may be brought up, why does a mage have to be athletic?

First of all, it would be nice to defend yourself when you're being targeted, mages tend to be the first target in any battle. Second of all, how are you going to use magic when you’re already worn out by walking?

Keep in mind Rick’s athletic ability isn’t average. It's so bad I might start to believe he has some illness that makes his body frail.

“Rick, how come you can’t do any physical activity?”

I might as well ask since he’s right in front of me. Rick made a sour expression as he stopped healing me. His eyes widened open then he immediately continued casting the healing spell.

“I guess it’s because I always neglected physical activity since I was too invested in magic, hahaha?” he said, awkwardly laughing.

“I see.”

Rick’s comment made things way better, my original assumption was far from correct. Going back to the original topic, when it comes to enhancing our body it’s better for it to be trained to a certain extent.

Most people don’t build too much muscle as most find it inconvenient when fighting, only a select few people choose strength over everything, not considering balance.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

There’s also how different people build muscle at different rates, for example women gain less muscle than men so they don’t look as well built as some men.

You have to take into consideration how people don’t generally care about muscle gain all too much aside from the obvious benefits. We don’t have any specific diets or workouts we follow, we generally eat what’s considered to be relatively healthy and our exercise is weapon training.

Typically when we enhance our body with mana, our normal body is added towards the end result, in some cases multiplication.

Take these numbers for example, disclaimer the numbers don’t mean anything other than to help the user to understand.

0.2 (0.4, 0.6) and 0.3 (0.6, 0.9) at first the number may be insignificant since it’s only a tiny decimal however when we apply it to our everyday life a single decimal is enough to change the outcome of life and death situations.

So why exert body and mind when you train both without much consequences. It’s a win-win situation for the person.

Although there are spells that can increase speed those are more in the debuff, buff, and curses category. Even then, the same rules still apply.

With training we’re able to combine this with our attacks to fight to our fullest strength, in my case swordsmanship.

There are three types of swordsmanship, Offensio Sword Style, Aequipondium Sword Style, and Praesidium Sword Style.

These are the technical terms used in verbals to documents. Still, it’s more common to refer to them as Offensive, Balance, Defensive, sword styles respectively.

As the names suggest, one is centered about offensive, another about defense, and the last one about finding a balance between the two.

Offensio Sword Style is a style which emphasizes speed and aggression above anything else. The main focus is to strike down the opponent first. In order to be able to react swiftly, there is discouragement for practitioners to wear heavy armor and instead opt for light clothing for maximum mobility.

The main focus of the Aequipondium style is finding a method on how to stay alive and approach a battle with the highest chance of winning whether that means relieving heavily on the practitioner's adaptability and usage of one's surroundings.

Lastly is the Praesidium Sword Style. The swordsmanship specializes in defensive, such as techniques which emphasize parrying and counter-attacking oncoming attacks. Due to this there are only a few ways to attack, the solution is the art of provocation, which makes the opponent take the initiative. A skilled practitioner would be able to read the flow of Magic and use their senses to block and counter any attack, including magic and projectiles.

Offensio Sword Style is considered to be the strongest and most popular one due to the aggressive nature. Aequipondium Sword Style follows next in popularity, the style is a divided opinion, some say the Praesidium Sword Style is better while others say it’s Aequipondium Sword Style.

Praesidium Sword Style is the least popular due to its passive nature. The ability to be able to attack sounds like a better idea than only defending. As such not many people chose this particular style.

Well, that doesn’t mean nobody chooses the style because if that was the case then this’ll be left in the history books as a style who never got the popularity to flourish. Since each style has the upsides and downsides many choose to learn all of them, focusing on the one they have a better grasp on.

From what I’ve seen Rona is primarily a Offensio Sword Style user, the final slash at the monster was a clear indicator if we ignored her battle style.
