Chapter 40: Choice

Chapter 40: Choice

“What do you have to say for yourself, huh! I just got beaten up because of you! Answer me, Miki!” Daisuke shouted.

I was let out rather quickly, the previous time took longer. Apparently the second years didn’t have the cleanest record. This wasn’t the first time they were involved in something like this.

Unfortunately for Raymond, he still faced punishment for destroying school property. I was also about to be included in this. Luckily I was again left on the hook because Mitsugi, Raymond, Daisuke, and the female student vouched for my innocence.

It was definitely unexpected for them to take their opinions into account. Look I’m not saying it isn’t valid, but I thought there was more taken into consideration when deciding the verdict.

However, at the same time it could have very well been because of the second year students. Plus my injuries suggested my innocence. After all, four students ganged up on me. The disciplinary committee witnessed it firsthand.

Anyways, I'm currently hearing how an angry Daisuke shouts at Mitsugi. Mitsugi sighed, which pissed Daisuke even more.

“Why the fuck are you acting like it doesn’t concern you!? I—“

“Clam down, we’re still near the disciplinary committee,” I said, letting my hand rest on his shoulder.

“…”

Daisuke soon backed down, but not before cursing under his breath. The reason for us standing around here was because we were waiting for Raymond to return.

“You know, as much as I want to apologize—I won’t. There were benefits of this fight,” said Mitsugi, cracking his finger bones.

“What? How could you possibly think that?” Daisuke shook his head in frustration yet kept his voice down. All of a sudden he glared at me.

“It’s because of you Chaim! If it wasn’t for you then I would’ve been fine with this outcome! But no, you had to open that fucking mouth of yours! Now what am I supposed to do? That motherfucker will tell her of my resignation! Worst of all it wasn’t by my own free will! Fuck!”

Daisuke almost kicked the wall, restraining himself at the last second. But his words were more clear than ever. He had a point, I blurted out unnecessary words which will make their lives harder.

It was a miscalculation on my part. It was the heat of the moment so I let my emotions get the better of me.

As if.

Surely that’s far from the case. I had every reason to say what I said. I’m not backing down or even going to regret my own words.

“It seems like you’re misunderstanding something,” I said, gaining his attention.

“What?”

I walked towards him, and punched him right in his face. He stumbled to the ground, surprised by the sudden attack. Mitsugi was about to restrain me before I shook my head.

“Would you really like to go back to her? Didn’t I hear all of your complaints back when we were hiding? Where is the attitude now? Don’t tell me you’re scared from the thought alone?” I said, crouching down to face him.

“Is your self worth low enough for you to bow to a bitch?” I asked.

“That’s besides the point! Someone like you won’t understand the situation!”

“Are you stupid?”

“Huh?”

“You’re the one who doesn’t understand the situation,” I said, standing back up.

“What do you mean?” Daisuke asked, clearly confused.

Daisuke stood back up, wanting answers. Out of nowhere, I felt the presence of someone. A familiar student appeared, scratching his head

“I’m back—huh? What is going on here?” Raymond inquired, stopping in his tracks.

“Well, just here; watching your friend having a mental breakdown. Apparently he’s terrified of a female,” I said, fully knowing the implication of my words.

“Is that so?” he muttered, not taking the bait.

Raymond approached Daisuke, Daisuke quickly explaining the situation. Raymond nodded his head, whispering something back. I was about to make a certain comment, but I refrain from doing so.

“Daisuke has a point. How are we supposed to deal with the consequences of your own words?” Raymond spoke to me, more composed than expected.

“Look, it’s not the consequences of my own words since it carries a negative connotation. You guys are benefiting from this,” I elaborated, checking my surroundings.

“Mitsugi,” I called Mitsugi, who was still beside me.

“Hm?” Mitsugi tilted his head.

“Go check if anyone is nearby. I don’t want any eavesdropping. By the way, I suggest you comb your hair. The pompadour is looking pretty bad.”

“Oh shit, really? Okay!”

Immediately convinced, Mitsugi headed out of our location. This left me alone with Raymond and Daisuke. I headed a bit closer to them to decrease any chances of anyone hearing our conversation.

I took precautions to not make the situation even more complicated. I don’t want anyone else hearing me. Raymond quickly realized my obvious tactic of getting rid of Mitsugi. Daisuke still glared at me as he rubbed his cheek in pain.

“You’re following her order because of the hierarchy, right? Mind telling me what class she’s in?” I whispered, deliberately lowering the loudness of my voice.

“2-A,” he replied, skeptical.

“As such, she has a lot of connections. You wouldn’t want to anger someone who holds more power than you. Isn’t that the case?” I asked, pacing around them.

“Yes, and?” Daisuke said.

Daisuke was getting impatient with me dragging the conversation, but I had no choice. I needed to know their stance on their predicament. Plus getting information about older students is always helpful. Raymond taped his foot on the ground repeatedly.

“Does the name David Barnett sound familiar?” I innocently asked.

“…Huh…?”

Raymond’s eyes widened as his face got pale. Daisuke on the other hand remained the same, giving me a vital clue.

“If so, then the name “The Neighbor’s Phantom” should be recognizable, no?”

“…I…H-how…? No…” Raymond gulped.

“Raymond, you okay?” Daisuke asked, genuinely concerned for his friend.

“Now, what will be your choice? Surely the answer is obvious.”

I no longer needed to hear his answer as I walked away from the location.

The answer is obvious.

Right?
