Chapter 15: Auction

Chapter 15: Auction

To say the nobles present were ecstatic was an understatement, they had awaited this event for a year. Although slaves were being sold every day, the quality was quite lacking since most of nobles who sold slaves put price tags on the leftovers. This meant the customers had little options to choose from, this lack of quality was best described by the saying ‘quantity over quality.’

The reality of situation was because of the abundance of slaves in the country, the price for most were comparable to livestock. Some went for even lower, depending on their history of past injuries, diseases, and more important factors taken into account when evaluating the price of a slave.

Of course, there were other auctions like this scattered around the event, but this one is the largest and most trustworthy one. Countless auctions have occurred on the same day years ago. It would be best to compare it to an annual event.

Due to the magnitude of the event, not everyone could attend the auction. In fact, you had to be invited or else you wouldn’t be let in. All the nobles here were personally invited by the organizer. And who in their right mind would decline an invitation to this auction?

The five men sitting on the front, had a better and clearly view to all the showcasing of the slaves. The distance from the table and the main stage was close enough where you had no problem inspecting the slaves yet far away so they could fully see the stage from their view point.

The butler bowed, and went to the side, curtains hid his actions. Murmurs echoed throughout the area, the lively atmosphere did not change whatsoever.

The butler came back with a demi human with their hands shackled with enhancement magic. The demi human was on the verges of tears, yet tried to look calm.

“Item number 1. From Solaris, 14 years old. Height 153 centimeters, weight 42 kilos. (5’0, 92 lbs) Brown hair, blue eyes. Gender, female. Animal species, donkey. Potential, F. In excellent health, no external injuries. Let the bidding begin at fifty gold coins.”

“Fifty one gold coins.” One noble raised his hand with no shame at all.

“Sixty five gold coins.” Another noble offered.

“Seventy gold coins.” Once again a noble countered the other’s offer.

“Ninety five gold coins.”

The sudden increase of price made the other nobles back out of the way. After all, this noble had offered way more money at the start, who knows what will happen if they try to match it. In addition, this is the very first item. While nothing to scoff at, it wasn’t even the best they had to offer.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

“Ninety five gold coins. Going once, going twice.” The butler scanned the area for any potential last offer, but once he saw none he clapped his hands. “Sold!”

“If this is the appetizer then by the end of the auction I’ll be broke!” The noble in question joked loudly, clearly wanting to express her sense of humor.

Contrary to popular belief during this time demi humans who were similar to donkeys were extremely intelligent even though they were stubborn to train or teach where even more extreme methods didn’t work. Due to this drawback not many people wanted to deal with the hassle of taming one.

As the name implies demi humans were half human and half animal, though the only resemblance to animals were their ears and having tails. Other than that they looked like any regular human.

“Bahahaha, you’re right. I can’t ever get over the auction. It’s finding a beautiful unpolished gem. The temptations! But, it’s unfortunate that the potential is too low. I’ll be skipping as this doesn’t peak my interest.” Another noble laughed, adding his own opinion afterwards.

“Are any of you going to bid for this one?” The man with the bird-like mask asked, sipping wine.

“Nah, I don’t see the point.” The third man responded, yawning.

“That’s true, it’ll take a while before the quality increases.”

“Say, what are you particularly looking for? I’m just looking for a servant to take care of my son.” The second man asked everyone sitting here.

“Anything that peaks my interest.” The fifth man responded.

“Someone with high potential. I hope to train them into a sort of bodyguard. At the worst they can be a meat shield though I would hate for it to happen.” The fourth man said.

“That’s my view on it too.” The first man nodded.

“To be honest I just came here since we were all gathering. For now, I don’t think I’ll waste my money.” The third man commented, shaking his head.

“Are you sure? This event is once a year. You might as well buy something for the memory.” The second man advised, not wanting for him to waste this opportunity.

“Eh, it really depends on what they sell. I might change my mind then,” he replied, tapping his finger on the table.

The auctions continued in the same manner, the item number increased as slaves were being sold one by one. The five men sitting on the table didn’t bid on a single of them. They had disinterested expressions behind their masks. The same could be said about a particular student in expensive new clothes, he resisted the urge to yawn.

Although some nobles had placed bids for the very first slaves, most kept their money and waited for a better offer. The only problem was that they couldn’t tell if the current slave was better than the future ones.

While the quality increased by each new one that appeared, that didn’t mean other circumstances needed to be ignored. Not all of nobles had enough money to spend of these slaves, they also weren’t stupid enough to waste it.

The five men sitting at the VIP section were quietly chatting with each other, barely paying attention to the current slaves being sold. When a new one was showcased they briefly glanced before going back to talking. This wasn’t unusual as most of them did that each year, it was like they met up and had a tiny celebration together.
