Chapter 29: Understand

“Haaaaah,” I sighed, my palm holding my chin.

It’s been a week since the incident. The one where I almost died. After sleeping for another hour, I was ready to head to the academy. Even though I felt horrible and would prefer to stay in bed all day, there was no way I would miss my third day.

My parents paid full tuition for this!

Anyways, on my day back nothing of importance occurred. Due to my uniform, which was required for everyone to wear it, being long sleeved it hid most of my bandages.

It was extra cozy in my uniform plus the bandages. It reminded me of when I first slept on an expensive bed. My parents got invited to this party and booked a nice lodge filled with fellow nobles. Of course, it was being guarded. If it wasn’t then we wouldn’t be there in the first place.

Back to the point, while most of my uniform covered my injuries, that couldn’t be said for my arm, hands, and cheek. One of my cheeks had a stripe of a bandage, it covered the scratch made by the sharp nails.

I wore black gloves for the whole week. They were more fashionable and less likely to get dirty. I could easily pass this off as me dressing in a certain style.

Not to mention since people witnessed the whole battle with the students from Class F, then I can blame it that my bandages were from them. This even helped me avoid punishment as it appeared, and am, a victim.

My fellow acquaintances weren’t as easy to convince. In the first place, they were right in front of me, or close by, when it happened. They definitely saw me without any injuries.

As such when confronted about my sudden desire of wearing gloves, I answered by saying I thought they looked cool. I even took one of my gloves off to prove my innocence. Obviously, my non injured hand.

Though I had to be very careful in my movements. I still had a bite mark on the top of my hand. Luckily, I avoid showing the bite, instead showing the palm of my hand.

Something I didn’t expect was my teacher to express concern over me. Here I was, thinking she had a low opinion of me, considering her first impression of me, yet that wasn’t the case. She asked my various questions, ensuring my safety.

That took me by surprise. She actually cares for her students.

I indeed have some sort of incentive.

Classes were bearable except for the one with the instructor who doesn’t like me. Although we had no mock battles or anything of that sort, we still trained with different weapons.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

We tested which would fit us the best, it wasn’t very interesting due to the lack of options. No, it wasn’t that. It was because most of us already knew what to choose. Most nobles get taught a specific weapon from birth.

I dozed off, not understanding whatever I was reading. All I knew was the theory of magic. How to apply it, and stuff like that. I definitely oversimplified it, but that’s the gist of it.

The current problem was quite the unfortunate situation. My eyes followed each word by word yet all I could do was stare in confusion.

I had no clue what I was reading.

I looked around, trying to see the expression of everyone. They all read the books, flipping through pages, scribbling words on paper, some muttered to themselves. The teacher was outside the room, close to the door, talking with someone.

I awkwardly placed my gaze downwards, scratching the back of my hand. I turned the pages over and over until I got tired and went to the last page. Page number 466, that was the end of the book. I gently closed the book, and read the title.

Magic for dummies.

Really?

There was no way this advanced curriculum was being described as magic for dummies.

Sure, it wasn’t the hardest course of this semester, but by no means was it easy. If it was then, I wouldn’t be having so much of a hard time understanding this.

Think of it like this.

Everyone can swing a weapon. But just because everyone can, it doesn’t mean they know how to properly use it.

Take my previously mentioned example, while it’s easy to swing it, there are many consequences of not swinging properly, wrist pain being an easy indicator of bad technique.

Yes, technique.

Without technique and a fundamental understanding you won’t go far into using magic. All you would be able to do is use basic spells, not even the more complicated versions of it.

Naturally some people have a better grasp of it even without going through lessons, but those are rare cases. If you really want to surpass your limits then you need to do this.

I secretly looked over to Mitsugi. He was writing some words, even making tiny visual pictures of the effects. To my surprise, he understood the material. I opened the book again, going to page one. I began reading all over once again.

By the time I did all of this, the teacher had come back, placing a similar looking book down. She clapped her hands, making the students look at her. She put her hand close to her mouth, faking a cough.

“Ahem. Everyone, I would like to make an important announcement. Attention!” she spoke in a loud voice.

Most students shut their mouths and listen to what the teacher was going to say, me included. I was grateful to her for saving me. I wasn’t going to sit through a whole class of me not understanding a single word of the book. I already know it won’t be a good time, I would pretty much be wasting my time.

Though there was another reason for the attention.

This was the first time she had said something about an important announcement.
