Chapter 62: Monster

Chapter 62: Monster

I should stop ranting on rats, I have better things to do. For starters getting distracted in a dungeon is dangerous, my monologue was short so it didn’t affect anything.

Since I was leading the group, I kept scanning the area as I carefully stepped inside the place. Although the location was dimly lit by the candles, this place in particular was devoid of light.

Hm? Is that—

Immediately I slammed my shield on the ground, not caring if I damaged it. A mana barrier appeared in front of us, the group behind me panicked due to my sudden movement.

However before they could voice their confusion, an oversized icicle shot forward, attempting to pierce through the barrier. The spell managed to leave a crack on the barrier, luckily the barrier protected us from the attack.

The unexpected attack caused the rest of them to separate, making a formation. Arakawa and Rick, Cynthia in the back while Leon, Rona, and I were in the front.

A gigantic, burly arm swung in my direction. Since I hadn’t pulled the shield from the ground I was forced to crouch to utilize the protection of the shield.

The impact caused me to be pushed back significantly, my hand made contact with the ice wall. A sharp pain followed as it wasn’t a nice cousin to land on, quite the opposite.

Rick took advantage of the attacker being occupied as he took out a stick which probably contained combustible material at one end, since he ignited and used it as a light source.

Did he use one of his back up wands?

The area was lit by the light source revealing a large monkey monster covered in white fur. The monster roared at the actions by Rick, angry about the light.

So, this is the boss. I don’t know if we're lucky or unlucky. I shook my head, and ran towards my shield which was flung away.

While running, the monster opened its mouth, ice formed at each passing second. A fire spell was shot in its direction, interrupting the attack, smoke and steam flowing as it covered the monster's face.

This was enough time to grab my shield, a quick glance at my shield told me the damages were pretty bad yet I still decided to continue using it.

The monster swung its arm around, the smoke cleared just as easily as it appeared. The monkey dug its hand into the group, crushed up the ice, and threw it at the group.

Since there was enough of a delay, I put my shield on the ground once again and let the attack be dismissed by the barrier I placed. Like I expected the ice simply hit the barrier, cracking as they didn’t make a dent.

Another physical attack from the monster will break my shield. As such, I must discard it because I leave myself in a vulnerable position.

Arrows were thrown at the monster, a few stabbed them, but the monster was too thick to make any significant damage. However unlike last time the next arrow shot actually pierced the monster's arm, the arrow could be seen from both the front and the back of its arm.

In fury, the monster moved its injury free arm back and in full speed swung it at my location. There was no way of protecting it so I ditched my shield and sprinted away from the location.

I ducked to evade the monster's arm, my shield being broken into pieces like a toy. Rona slashed the monster's leg, the tiny cut led to blood showing. Leon threw his spear in the same location, his spear connecting. Rona took out the spear, giving it back to Leon.

In relation the monkey thrusted its leg, kicking Rona away. Due to having no sort of protection against the attack, she was flung right through an ice wall.

She might be out of the battle…

I sprinted at the monsters, my speed increased due to my left hand being free. The monster noticed my movement and attacked, swinging its arms.

At the moment a boost of speed made it easier to jump over the attack, I was in the air. Since I was in the air, if I landed badly the consequences would be severe. Spells and arrows being shot at the monsters as I glided through the air, the momentum I built up wasn’t going to waste.

Once again my body gained strength and I descended downwards, and plunged my sword deep into its back. It reacted, thrashing around in pain. I held onto its fur so as to not fall, my nails dug deep into its fur.

I pulled my sword out, the open wound bleeding as I was thrown off. I managed to recover my sword this time, the blade being covered in its blood.

There was no time to rest as a spell was being form within its mouth. This one however was different from the previous one. Unfortunately my shield was destroyed, I could still put up a barrier but the mana consumption would be larger. Plus it would only protect myself, not the other students near me.

Rick pointed his staff at the monster, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. A red spell was charged, and then immediately thrown. The tiny red light tracked in fast speeds, when it made contact with the closest thing that wasn’t air, which happened to be the monster, the light exploded, the monster being engulfed in fire.

Due to the spell, it shot its unfinished spell at them. The multiple icicles were headed towards Rick, who was beating heavily as he touched his heart, when Leon attempted to intercept the attack.

He cut the spells in pieces in an effort to lessen the damage. It worked, but not without damage. Few icicles made it past, slashing Leon’s body. His armor wasn’t enough to protect him as cuts began spreading throughout his body. Leon gritted his teeth as he continued cutting the rest.

To my surprise, Rona appeared back, unfortunate she still sustained damages, her head bleeding and arms shaking. She brought the sword towards her chest and dashed at the monster, slashing the chest of the monster.

I gave her support as I aimed for the same leg Rona attack. I stabbed the wound over and over as many times as I could before it attempted to kick me.

Sadly, I was caught up in the next attack, its arm finally connected, the side of my stomach being impacted. I was pushed back into a wall, this time breaking through it.

I stayed there, watching my surroundings. I was getting dizzy, the numbness was a strange sensation as liquid ran down my arm. When I glanced at my arm, blood was dripping out from a seemingly sharp object.

It seems like my sword cut me when I was flung. Luckily I wasn’t stabbed, it could have gone way worse. I let my hands wander around my body, I patted myself to check for any injuries.

There wasn’t anything noteworthy, if you don’t include the numbness, and increasing pain. I grabbed my sword once again, and stood back up.
