Chapter 42 - Seed of Doubt

Chapter 42 - Seed of Doubt

Faced with a terrible situation where a giant red lizard is staring at you, clearly seeing you as food, I'm sure anyone would despair. The first time with me, it was no different, although it was anxiety and not despair. Every time the monster moved, the ground shook, showing the boss's strength. Even though it was the second time, I still found it quite impressive.

"We're going to die, we're going to die, it's over. Two useless guys like us could never get away from this thing"

While some thoughts were going through my head, the voice of the boy next to me brought me back to reality. His arm was still broken, but strangely he wasn't feeling the pain anymore. I think fear is acting like an anesthesia or something. His face was so pale that I was swearing he would pass out at any moment.

Putting this out of my mind, I looked back to find everyone watching us. Baji had a huge smile on his face as he watched us. Aoi-sensei was trying her best to help us while being stopped by Shinji. Saemi was looking at me worriedly, not knowing what to do. After that, I turned my gaze to Fujiwara and found her leaning against a tree, not looking anywhere in particular. When she noticed my gaze, she looked at me and smiled. For some reason, she seemed to find the situation funny.

(She certainly knows about my powers and my relationship with Saemi, although I have no proof of the latter)

Putting that out of my mind, I turned my gaze back to the boss.

(Anyway, I need to find a way to survive for now without using my powers)

I thought as I looked at the boss. As the boss looked at us, I noticed that his belly started to glow red. That was not a good sign.

"Hey"

I said, getting the attention of the boy standing next to me.

"If you don't want to die, I recommend you start getting ready to run, preferably around this thing. From the size, it probably doesn't have much mobility"

I said. After my words, I stood up and started running closer to the monster. Although those watching from the outside might think I'm trying to commit suicide, I know this monster better than anyone. As I ran to the back of the lizard, I realized that its eyes were locked on me until the moment its vision turned to the other boy. Looking back, all I could see was the boy looking at me with tears in his eyes. His mouth was wobbling as if he was trying to say something. This was my last vision of him before he was engulfed in a sea of flames.

The fire continued to advance until it reached Saemi and the others. But thanks to a large black wall followed by a wall made of wind, the monster's attack was contained. I looked again at the place where the boy was earlier but found nothing. There was no trace that anyone could have been there a few seconds ago. As soon as the boss was done with his first victim, he stood for a few seconds, looking between Saemi's group and me. After a few seconds of indecision, he turned back to me. As soon as his tail rose into the air, a terrible sensation hit me. Without a second thought, I rolled to the side, dodging his tail, which hit the ground with tremendous force.

(If it had hit me, I would have turned to dough)

I thought as I looked at the state of the ground where the boss's tail was. As I looked at the boss again, I saw that his hand was up, but this time it was too late to dodge.

(Damn, I'll have to use an ability)

I muttered. It was all happening too fast for me to analyze the situation calmly. All I knew was that if I got hit, I would die. Just as I was about to use one of my skills, I felt something grabbing my waist. Looking down, I saw that there was something dark around my waist holding me down.

(Fujiwara?)

I thought, turning my gaze to Fujiwara. Within seconds, I felt my body being pulled towards Fujiwara and the others, escaping the boss's attack. Although I was saved, Fujiwara didn't seem to have thought of a way to land, and I practically rolled until I reached them.

"We won't be able to defeat this thing with so few people on our side. We need more attack power"

Fujiwara said. As soon as I got up from the ground, I looked at Fujiwara with a scowl on my face. When she saw my expression, she flashed a smile while making a peace sign and sticking out her tongue. Although it was cute, it didn't change the fact that I was angry with her.

"Let's go. We need to tell the others that we found the boss"

Said Shinji, walking back as if nothing had happened.

"Come on, Saemi"

Said Shinji, starting to walk. Saemi glanced at me worriedly, but I just nodded my head, showing a small smile. After that, everyone left, leaving only me and Aoi-sensei in place. I glanced at Aoi-sensei and saw that she was making a rather perplexed expression on her face.

"How could they do that? I know they didn't get along very well, but they were still classmates"

Said Aoi-sensei. She always tried to see the good in everyone and everything. That was also a part that made me admire her, but it's dangerous in a place like this. When the main issue is survival, everything else is discarded.

"I know how you're feeling, Aoi-sensei"

I said, getting her attention.

"Although I don't like this situation either, we need to adapt. If we don't know who our true allies are, more deaths will happen"

Hearing my words, Aoi-sensei became silent.

"Especially when it comes to Shinji and his henchmen, they are the last people you want to trust with your life"

I said, walking away from the scene.
