Chapter 108 - Horde of monsters (2)

While I advanced towards the monsters, I noticed that the surroundings around me started to be bathed in a vibrant glow of intense red. Initially, I thought it was the sun rising on the horizon, but I quickly dismissed that idea since the trees were blocking its light.

As I lifted my gaze, I came across several giant fireballs flying in front of me, ready to collide with the approaching horde of monsters. It seemed like the wizards had already initiated their attack.

Looking back, I could see several adventurers, including Eldric and his wife. Although I was curious to learn about the fighting style of the Demi-humans, I knew it wasn't the right time for that. Redirecting my gaze forward, I focused my attention on the approaching monsters.

Among them, I spotted Goblins, creatures that resembled a combination of a bull and a human, as well as beings with wolf-like features mixed with humans, but with a predominance of animal traits. The horde consisted of various other monstrous species, each representing a potential threat.

Raising my sword, I struck a diagonal blow at the first approaching monster, cleaving it in half with precision. I continued, cutting one after another, taking advantage of the fact that many of them had their movements slowed down due to the ice freezing their feet. However, this advantage didn't last long. The sturdier monsters, with impressive physical strength, started to break free one by one and advanced towards me determinedly.

"Cloning"

With determination, I released two clones that materialized by my side and went towards the monsters, using my skills in perfect synchrony. With each passing minute, the number of monsters decreased significantly, and the sound of other adventurers fighting also echoed in the air.

However, I knew I had to exert myself even more. After cutting down another monster, I took a few steps back and placed my hand on the ground. Within seconds, a series of ice spikes emerged from the ground, impaling several monsters in front of me.

Maintaining the relentless pace, I continued to advance and eliminate every monster that crossed my path. I could feel the presence of my clones by my side, delivering precise blows and contributing to the defeat of countless monsters. When I reached a favorable strategic position, I decided to activate a new ability.

"Ice Mist"

With the spoken words, a frosty mist began to spread from my body, enveloping a large area of the battlefield. Within seconds, several monsters were frozen by the intense cold, while others, even if not immobilized, suffered from the sluggishness caused by my ability.

Without losing momentum, I continued to deliver deadly strikes with my sword, cutting down monster after monster. Although I couldn't see it, I'm sure Saemi, Aoi-sensei, Fujiwara, and Ana were also casting their spells, contributing to the defeat of the enemies.

As my sword became stained with the crimson blood of the monsters, a deafening roar echoed through the battlefield, capturing the attention of both the monsters and my allies. Following the sound, an overwhelming presence manifested itself, sending a shiver down my spine.

The monsters also seemed to sense the same disturbance. While everyone wondered what it could be, something emerged from the skies in a majestic flight. Its imposing wings flapped, filling the air with a powerful noise. It had a long neck and enormous hind legs with claws capable of tearing any creature apart with ease. Its vibrant coloration was an intense crimson red.

"A Wyvern?"

I involuntarily exclaimed as I watched the creature. Unfortunately, the brief moment of calm was interrupted as the monsters, stirred by the presence of the Wyvern, intensified their assault towards us with even greater ferocity.

While battling the monsters, my mind focused on finding a way to defeat the Wyvern. Time was running short as the creature approached the city faster and faster. While pondering this, I noticed a monster sneaking up behind me. Before I could react, the monster was abruptly cleaved in half by a massive sword. As I looked at the owner of the sword, a grateful smile formed on my face.

"I'm relieved to see you're still alive, lad"

Eldric approached, and beside him was his wife, who surprisingly managed to explode one of the monsters' heads with a single punch. Honestly, I found it somewhat unbelievable, even though I witnessed the event. I was amazed by the strength she possessed in that fist. Perhaps sensing my doubt, Eldric promptly dispelled it.

"Demi-humans, although lacking the ability to use mana, possess exceptional physical strength, considered one of the greatest among all races. Additionally, their bodies are naturally robust and have innate resistance against magical attacks"

Eldric said, his smile giving way to a serious and determined expression.

"Makoto... do you believe you can defeat that thing?"

Surprised by Eldric's question, I could perceive the flame of hope and expectation in his eyes. It was evident that he placed his hopes in me, eagerly awaiting my response. Intrigued, I decided to address the question directly.

"Why do you believe that?"

I asked Eldric, raising an eyebrow, making the question straightforward. I attentively awaited his answer, observing the smile forming on his face as he prepared to respond.

"While I'm not certain of your exact level of strength, I can say with conviction that you are incredibly powerful, perhaps even at the level of an A-rank... or even beyond. However, regardless of that, the fact is that I'm making a gamble here. If you can't face that threat alone, sadly, many lives will be lost. Honestly, you represent my last hope to minimize the casualties"

Eldric stared at me with seriousness as he spoke those words. In that moment, I perfectly understood the meaning behind them. Our battle didn't come without consequences, for I witnessed lives being extinguished as we advanced. I vividly recall a man being impaled by the horn of one of those bull-like creatures, while another was relentlessly devoured by a pack of hungry wolves.
