Chapter 34 The HeaRt's TRuth

Chapter 34 The HeaRt's TRuth

The dread that Chimera felt about her new little sister started to pale in comparison to the newest problem in front of her.

They were now in the middle of the cafeteria where apparently Livewire fought off against the Warden of Blackrock, because she was trying to hide evidence.

Chimera’s first question was how, but the statement she gave to her just before she entered the prison rang in her head.

‘The Blackrock Watch will take care of this. I’m sorry but we cannot allow others to interfere, even heroes.’

Chimera grimaced as she moved towards the still unconscious body.

Still, now with the evidence, she and Livewire had clout in case the heroes started asking questions.

Yet…

Why do I care?

Sarah would have cared, she would have wanted to make sure that her identity was a secret regarding her connection with Dr. Pox.

Chimera was completely outside of that though.

She was following the dead woman’s wish to stop the bastard from hurting more people, but in the end, that’s what a hero would do.

Chimera was a bioweapon.

No matter how many she saved, if the word got out about that, what would that do?

More importantly, what would the humans do?

Probably turn on me, dissect me so that Monica’s other R series don’t get past them as well.

The law became sketchy when those types of people were involved.

The ‘accidents'.

Chimera shook her head.

Even if they do, I’ll help them beat Pox and the children.

She could decide what she would do afterwards.

With a not so nice tendril into a pain receptor, Chimera took the power that the warden Luna had and stockpiled it.

Which might have been a mistake as her friend turned to her with a downright ravenous look in her eyes.

“Gimme.”

Chimera was shocked for a second, “wha…?”

“Gimme Gimme! That power, whatever it just was, gimme!”

Her friend picked her up and held her close.

“See, made it easier for you, aren’t I a great friend? Now gimme!”

Being glommed like this, Chimera decided to acquiesce to her friend's request, and shoved the bloody power inside her.

She did enjoy being held for a few seconds first though.

For science reasons and stuff.

Once her friend felt the insertion, she immediately let go and started to jump around.

“Oh yeah baby! I can’t wait to get back! Which reminds me…”

She took Chimera’s hand, “Chimera, there was a bunch of tech down there, medical grade and logistical stuff. Could you go grab it for me?”

She eyed her friend, “what’s this all for?”

Her friend unabashedly said.

“I’m making a power armor that can keep me alive inside it, a heal suit!”

Chimera was confused for a moment, until Sarah’s memories came back about the ‘heal suit’.

It was an idea that she and Meghan came up with that would allow the person inside to survive, even without certain parts of their body.

No leg because it got blown up, no problem.

Had your internal organs been destroyed and pulverized? No problem,

Did you have so much blood loss you might as well be a corpse? Heal suit to the rescue!

The heal suit was essential a biological environment suit that kept you alive and moving while running the parts of your body that were no longer there.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

Sarah had came up with the idea when she was looking for way to help her brother, a way that would have let him experience life despite his cancer.

“Got it, will be right back… are you going to be okay when the heroes get here?”

Her friend stared at her like a deer in headlight, “m-maybe I should go with you?”

Chimera smiled and took her friend’s hand as they went back down into the underground.

…Even if I’m not Sarah anymore… Meghan will still be my friend.

Chimera made the vow in her heart as the labs started to come into view.

They landed near the lab that Meghan spoke about, the one where she found out about the facilities purpose.

The corpse of the inmate was still there, but he strangely seemed at peace to Chimera.

“Rest in peace.”

Chimera absorbed the body and started to digest it within her.

…What?

The power that the inmate had was incredible, worthy of some of the best superhero powers she had ever got from the rest of the inmates here.

Even me?

‘Oh come on Clonemera, you can’t compare yourself to every power or you’ll just get jealous all of the time!

I’m not jealous, I'm also taking that power just to prove how not jealous I am!

‘That’s the opposite! Jealousy is envy! Also you’re me, you already have all the powers!

Chimera, despite talking to herself, felt an image of her clone sticking her tongue out at her as she fumed.

She let it go in the face of the new gift that she received.

Aero kinesis!

She hopped up and down as she reveled in the power as it coursed through her.

Her friend caught on quickly.

“Gimme?”

Chimera turned around holding her chest, “no, you already got the mech suit power thingy!”

Her friend grinned evilly, “gimme~!”

“You can’t have aero kinesis too!

Meghan summoned her little bots as they rushed Chimera.

“Tickle her until she cooperates, my Mekkas!”

“You’re a super villainess! What has science done?!”

After they messed around for a bit, Chimera began collecting the rest of the medical grade equipment into her body’s strange pseudo space.

For good measure she grabbed a few hi-lows and packages filled with gear and oddly enough, money.

Chimera took it anyway, but money was about to become a nonissue for them.

She reached out for her new earth power and turned a piece of rebar into a golden stick.

“So… if you are needing new components for your machines, I gotchu.”

Meghan’s hungry gaze returned, “I’m so glad we decided to raid a prison full of supers.”

“Hey! Aren’t we supposed to be heroes?”

Her friend side eyed her, “oh come on Chimera, we’re basically stealing evidence here.”

“...Okay, but we’re using it for a good cause, that’s pretty heroic right?”

“If allowing us to make our own shit without supervision or morals is heroic, we’re goddamn Captain Asta.”

“Morals? We are the pinnacle of morals!”

Meghan turned over to look at the bodies of the unfortunate people Chimera left in her wake.

“...if morals were a sandwich that we were eating.”

“Too soon, I still feel really bad about it!”

Meghan patted her on the head, “Look, Sarah, you killed a bunch of convicts on death row and a few scientists who were actively torturing people. I’m not going to say that was right, but I feel a little better that they’re all gone.”

I’m not…

Chimera shook her head, “still, I’m not killing unless they are-,”

“Chimera, stop for a second.”

She looked up at her friend, “don’t make oaths like that, hell don’t even say them in your head. You don’t know what you’ll be facing, and these bastard death children are going to use that against you. You have a rare gift, Chimera.”

Meghan got on her knees so they were eye level, “you can help people, but you can also do things that others can’t, which is saying alot in our world. You can stop these bastards for good.”

Meghan hugged her, and for once it didn’t feel in jest or for fun.

Raw emotion came through as Meghan held her close, “you are a hero, but you can also do more than heroes can, so don’t limit yourself to our rules. Don’t shackle yourself to fit in. I know Sarah would have wanted you to do everything your little body could do to help people, your way.”

‘Does she know?!’

Of course she does, you idiot! Meghan’s been friends with Sarah for over four years, how would she not notice how much her friend has changed?

‘B-But-’

Idiot older sister, listen to me, because you’re overthinking it again. She knows and she still accepts you.

Chimera felt her body shift, and while she retained her human shape, the blob that she was underneath started to show on her skin.

“You know then… that Sarah’s…”

“Of course I did, I saw her body, and I saw your changes.”

“I didn’t mean to! I was-”

“It’s alright, we’re still friends, even if you hijacked my dead friend's memories.”

“That’s not funny Meghan, I really did!”

“Sarah would have laughed her ass off at that.”

To prove Meghan’s point, Chimera could hear the laughter of her clone in the background.

“See? You and her are different, and that's fine, just like how you don’t have to play by our rules. You’re a blob, go crazy or something.”

Sarah… no, Chimera, cried her eyes out as she held her friend, her friend, in a tight embrace.

“You can’t go back on your word! Never ever!”

Meghan patted her head, “there, there, I wouldn’t even if I could, you’re too much fun to be around Chimera.”

Despite the need to continue with their window shopping, Chimera and Meghan knelt there for a good time before eventually getting back to stealing.
