Chapter 19 Understand youR PRey

Chimera was walking back towards the Hero’s League as last night played back in her head again.

She couldn’t recall a time where both she and her brother were just happy like that, at least not after Dr. Pox ruined their lives.

Now though, it felt like she had finally obtained what she was after.

Her brother was as safe as he could be.

He had a future in New Terra University.

He didn’t really need her to take care of him anymore, that much became certain.

“How do you just turn off the need to help your sick brother?”

When he talked to her about moving into the dormitories, Sarah wanted to stop him, not because she thought it would be unsafe.

She realized that was merely an excuse.

No, she wanted to keep being his protector, the one who looked after him.

“...I may need to see a shrink about this.”

It was a nagging feeling, and Sarah couldn't really tell where it was coming from.

She shook her head, this wasn’t the time to be thinking about mental issues.

She walked inside and was met by Glow as she rushed over to her.

“Chimera, did you hear about the break out?”

No she certainly did not…”

“What happened?”

Glow took her by the hand as she led her to the others.

Chase was fidgeting with her hands when they arrived, and Bullet had a grimace on his face as if he didn’t like the way the floor was polished.

“Okay, so Chimera didn’t get the memo. We’re going to need to get her some equipment in case of emergencies.”

Chimera turned to see Elastiman of all people, who was standing off to the side as he took a head count of them all.

“I’m sure most of you heard by now, but for the rest, it appears that Gideon has escaped the hospital.”

Chimera felt a shiver run through her.

He knows about me, but not about Aden. He’s safe, calm down.

She took in a breath as she listened to the rest.

“Last night at about ten pm, there were reports of supervillain activity near the headquarters. So many of the people assigned to guard him had left.

It was a blunder, we didn’t know that he had any sort of accomplices to fall back on, as his condition was also a factor. Who would think such an injured man could be moved…”

Elastiman seemed to be struggling with the next part.

“It would seem that based on the cameras in the hospital, that Crysa is on the move again.”

Chimera noticed the room grew silent as the grave at the mention of this Crysa.

“She can’t be! Wasn’t she dead?”

Her friend Glow was panicking judging by the pheromones coming off her.

Chase and Bullet were also in terror, their eyes rapidly moving from what Chimera could tell.

“Who is Crysa?”

They all turned to her, and Chimera felt a bit of a shiver go up her spine as Elastiman turned to address her.

“You may not know much about villains yet Chimera, but the Pox death children are some you need to be aware of.”

He led them all to another room with a projector, stretching his arm to turn on the device while grabbing a remote as well.

After the device hummed to life, he turned another device, a computer from the look of it on.

“Nell, show us the images of designates ‘Death Children of Dr. Pox’.

“Of Course, Elastiman, pulling up their files and images now.”

Woah! It’s a service intelligence!

The fear in the room was masked as Chimera thought about all the tech that must have went into building her,

Service Intelligence was just a step under a fully functioning Artificial Intelligence.

To think that they could even make one, the Hero’s League must have either had the backing, or someone with a tech powerset.

“These are Dr. Pox’s death children, the ones we know of at least.”

Five images appeared on the screen, with one of the images blacked out.

“This is Gideon, also known as Techwolf, Most of you already know him.”

Gideon’s face came up, but the face was a much younger look, probably around when he was ten years old.

“After finding out how he tricked the system into masking his supervillain file, we’ve determined that despite his lycanthropic abilities, he also has a deft hand at tech and espionage.”

Elastiman pointed to the next portrait, a smaller girl with a manic face and sharp teeth.

Her hair was black and white, and her jaw was just a bit longer in the face, as if it was making up for all that powerful jaw.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Her eyes were black, dark, and deep.

“This is Aura, though we know her by the name Killer Whale. She’s been in hiding for a bit, and it’s determined that she most likely isnt’ a threat anymore. Nonetheless, she is a powerful water kinetic, and her jaw is filled with razor sharp teeth. It’s safe to say she can take an arm off with that alone.”

Elastiman pointed to the next portrait.

It was a young man this time, but the way he presented himself was regal.

Purple coat, golden trimmings along a suit that seemed made for him.

Glasses around his eyes that seemed to be made of gemstone, and the eyes were gold.

The hair was trimmed into spikes, and they looked like stalagmites from the picture.

“This is Toren, Supervillain alias Terralord. He is currently in Blackrock Prison off the coast of New Terra. He can turn stone around him into whatever he wishes, so long as he understands the composition of what he's trying to make. Thankfully, he seems to like only gold and gemstones. If he had the knowledge to use it for something more dangerous, we might have had to put his evil butt into cryostasis.”

Chimera felt a bit of hunger reach into her as she looked at Toren’s profile.

A power like that… I could use the junk near our lab to create some amazing tech.

Gold is an amazing material for computer parts after all.

She took a step back as she realized her condition.

Was I always this hungry for that?

Power would protect her and her loved ones, so maybe it was that.

She turned back to the projector.

“This is what we spoke about before. This is Crysa.”

The portrait pulled up, and Chimera felt her insides freeze at the picture.

It’s her!

Golden eyes, green hair.

A self-aggrandizing smirk on her face.

“This is the only picture we have of her, and it’s from three years ago. Crysa is a power enhancing supervillain, and it is one of the worst things that you can imagine.”

Elastiman pointed to a video that portrayed the super villainess.

Crysa was pulling apart a transformer with her bare hands, while also shooting lightning out of her body from the excess electricity.

“Crysa has a body that is made of super-conductive material, and as such, is incredibly deadly when near places with access to electricity. That isn’t the part you should be worried about though.

It has been determined that her body can also absorb energy from others, people with gifts. While she cannot take the superpowers from the individual, she can leave them unable to move or use them for days at a time.

This goes straight into her body, and makes her so powerful that she could fight, and possibly win, against Captain Asta. Yes, I'm not joking about that.”

Chimera flashed back to the moment when her father and mother were alive.

The scene of them running, while a golden eyed girl chased after them.

“I’m sorry about this…”

The green haired girl almost seemed upset by what she did, and the dead-eyed stare of her parents still scared her.

Her brother was next to her, and despite her fear, she tried to protect him as much as she could.

Then, HE came.

Next to the golden-eyed girl was a man who was rather unremarkable in comparison.

He had a medical gun in his hand, with a backpack filled with viscous fluid, as if he was carrying a chemistry set.

His eyes though, they stared at her like she was a speck of dust needing to be cleansed.

“You spared them?”

The girl nodded.

“Yet, they may come back for revenge, are you not worried, my failure of a daughter?”

“Then I’ll deal with it at that time… Father.”

Sarah shook herself out of the memory.

“If you meet her, if you even spot her, do not engage. She’s not someone you kids are ready for.”

The others didn’t seem too eager to answer back, and Chimera couldn't blame them.

It’s different for me though… what would happen if I tried to absorb her power?

She might gain her ability.

She also might die because of Crysa’s gift to absorb energy.

Until she had more data, more tools that she could use to fight her, Chimera wasn’t ready to face her yet.

“This is the last of the confirmed death children, though we do not have a photo of her.”

The description read ‘the mastermind.’

“With Dr. Pox imprisoned in Blackrock, the Hero’s League believed it to be easier to deal with his remaining creations. However, it became clear after a while that the children were being led by someone, a person we either have not met, or could not identify.

It became even clearer when certain crimes with the children were involved. Information that could not have been known to the death children had been leaked, and events happend that showed a guiding hand helping them.

This ‘mastermind’ is determined to be one of them, but so far, no records have shown even a slip of a detail regarding her.

This message, that was sent to our Headquarters, is the only thing we have to confirm anything.”

He tapped a play button on the screen, and a voice came out. It was heavily encrypted, and it sounded like a voice that had been put through a cheese grater.

“Soon, the hour of mankind will end, and the race of Huma will rise. May death come to the unworthy.”

Even with the garbled message, Sarah recognized her old boss's voice.

It was hard to get that ‘holier-than thou’ pitch out of her head, even when she heard it everyday back at Chemtech.

“This is her only broadcast, and we determined it was female from what we could scrub from this message. It’s hard to say what she’s planning, but it is clear about one thing.

They are planning something, and it may involve either their creator’s vision, or something more devious.”

Chimera remembered the data she found in the underground lab.

It was clear that Monica was not interested in elevating humanity like her father.

It also had something to do with the R series, but those plans about mind control and remaking humans didn’t sit right with her.

The mind was hard to mess with in the first place, so how would she even get that to work?

Chimera might have been able to shift some chemicals around, but pure mind control?

No, that couldn't really be it.

…Unless she got a hold of someone, someone with the gift, and got Crimson R to absorb it.

In fact… her abilities, weren’t they pretty similar to Crysa’s to begin with?

“Take this time to consider, and reflect on the information you just witnessed. If Gideon and Crysa are involved, there’s no telling what could be next. The other death children might come into play as well, so be on your guard.”

They all nodded to Elastiman as he left the room.

“To think Gideon was one of those guys.”

Bullet shook his head as he spoke.

“That Crysa was pretty scary though right? If she helped out her brother like that, she might come after the ones who put him away.”

Chase seemed calm. But the fear chemicals coming off of her told another story.

“Either way, we just got to train and be ready. Even if Crysa and her brother come at us, we can prevail if we outsmart them.”

They turned to face Chimera, “you got to be careful though Chimera. They may be after you most of all.”

She made a show of showing her determination, “I’ll take them on!”

Inside her mind though, she was calculating.

If they come, I’ll be ready.
