Chapter 1 Red Alert

Chapter 1 Red Alert

Sarah was pretty sure she was dead.

Mostly due to the fact that she had a moment where everything was just gone, thoughts, memories, and even thinking.

She could remember, it was something to do with a bang, a loud bang, and then everything stopped making sense.

She should be dead, she was, wasn’t she?

Yet…

Sarah felt something surrounding her.

She was inside something, and that meant that she must be alive, somehow.

Where am I?

Sarah opened her eyes, but… she had no eyes.

Instead, she could see everything around her, like a large dome.

She couldn’t see far, but she could see everything within that range.

Sarah guessed it must be around fifteen feet or so.

Why does that fact sound so familiar?

Fifteen feet, fifteen feet, there was something to that…

Either way, she took in the sight around herself.

Finally getting a look at herself.

That… is me?

Sarah felt like she didn’t use to be this thing, that she was something a lot bigger.

Now though.

She was a red blob, surrounded by red liquid, in a red tinted tube with silver fixtures.

I’m a blob… that can’t be right, I was something else!

She tried to puzzle it, but as she did a stranger approached her tube.

The stranger was a human, a person, and something she remembered she used to be.

That’s right, I used to be like this human woman!

She moved closer to the tube wall, trying to get closer to the person in front of her.

Help me! Someone put me in here, but I’m like you!

Her words did not reach the scientist though. Instead, the lady pulled out a clipboard.

“Subject B-2412 is now active once more. Despite being part of a contaminated batch of Crimson R series, has been introduced back into the nutrient solution… despite the efforts of my former supervisor Dr Sarah Lesana Bockman.”

She put down her strange blocky device, clicking a button when she did.

“Why Sarah, you should have known better than taking from the company. It was only ever going to end one way.”

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

The doctor lady seemed to be upset, and Sarah could make out a tear in the corner of her eye.

“Damnit Sarah… why?”

Wait, am I that Sarah she’s talking about?

Bang, Bang, dead.

Sarah felt like that meant something, something she should remember.

She tried hitting the case of glass over and over.

“Subject B-2412 is strangely active… more so than even its past iterations. Did it pick something when it was exposed? It shouldn’t be active like this though.”

Wait! Please hear me! I’m Sarah!

She hit the glass more and more, trying desperately to get the doctor’s attention.

“Subject B-2412 is continuously hitting the glass, indications of accelerated thought are becoming a possibility. Is it finally gaining some sentience? It’s too soon, though. Sarah… you said that these test subjects were alive… but all the data before never showed this. Is this what you meant?”

Meghan! Its me! Please let me out!

Her thoughts were coming back to her, and she was starting to remember.

She worked with a corporation regarding alien DNA found on an asteroid. She knew she found out something proving that they were capable of healing human life. One of the board… her name was Monica Ferrous, she wanted to use them in weapon’s production, something about their elastic nature allowing for better weapon’s development. Sarah… she couldn’t let that woman get away with turning this breakthrough into a weapon. Not when it could save...

She… had been found out by Monica’s counter intelligence team, and Monica killed her.

The bang was from the first shot, which broke the seal on the Crimson R series. It hit her through her stomach. She turned around… and saw Monica with a malicious grin on her face.

She looked wrong, like something with her face had been stretched out to mimic something human. Instead, she looked terrifying and even alien herself. She was saying something, but by then Sarah couldn’t make it out anymore.

Bang, she felt her thoughts grow muddled, but not before she felt the R series do something in her body.

Did the R series bond with me?

Either way, it didn’t matter unless she got out of this place.

“Subject seems to be attempting to escape containment. Preparing failsafe… wait?! What is that?”

Sarah was now making a crack in the glass. She pushed harder and harder.

“W-Wait, how is it this strong? No corpses were fed to it and it was inactive the entire… oh no.”

Sarah hit a pressure point on the machine, and the entire thing began to buckle.

“Emergency, containment has been breached! Security forces must-,”

One last charge sent Sarah flying out of the tube, glass and red liquid following her in her wake.

“G-Get me out of here!”

Sarah's body took a moment to move, as the liquid seemed to keep her together before she forced herself out. Now she was trying to move what she felt were new limbs.

Damnit, Meghan must have the key, I can’t let her get away!

She moved toward her old colleague, and was surprised when she found herself incredibly agile. She turned her form into a ball and began rolling towards her fellow scientist.

“No! Get away!”

Meghan tried to swat her away with her clipboard, but Sarah prepared by turning into a slime. The board simply attached itself to her, giving Sarah a way up Meghan’s arm.

“AHHHH!”

Sarah tried to tune out her friend’s scream as she grabbed the access card around her neck.

Come on! I don’t have long before they lock this place down!”

Sarah latched onto the door, pulling her and Meghan in the process.

With a thud, her friend's face hit the retinal scanner just as Sarah placed the card along the reader.

Access granted, Dr Meghan Schumann

Yes!

The door slid open, and Sarah finally felt like she was free, until she noticed the bio-decontamination chamber before her.

Damnit! It’s made specifically for the Crimson R series! How am I going to get out?

She focused on Meghan, who was now unconscious from either being scared half to death or being slammed against the door. Either way…

Sarah had a very dark thought.

She looked around the room, rolling back inside the chamber where she found a ventilation shaft.

Okay… lets see if the tests I did on Crimson R series were true.

She hardened her form, creating a spear of red viscous fluid from her body. With a twist, she began turning the self-made weapon like a drill, and launched it at the vent. With a burst, the vent crashed into the shaft, opening the way forward. She crawled towards the vent, and once she was inside, she found what she had been looking for.

There!

She touched the device and heard the alarms go off.

With speed she rolled back to her friend and pulled her into the decontamination chamber.

Now… we wait.
