Chapter 46: A Final Conversation
“Oh, you lads finished?”
“Indeed.”
“Hohahaha!”
I answered with a slight smile while Clovis simply laughed cheerfully in confirmation.
In other words, we all finished what we needed to do first.
“Well then, let’s sit down for a chat first before we go.”
I sat down in the chair and motioned for Llednar and Clovis to do the same.
“Is that all right?”
“So long as my Troupe gets the ending it rightfully deserves, I am satisfied. Do we have the leisure to rest here?”
“We do. I checked the time. We should still have plenty of time left.”
I nodded.
“We need to discuss some things before we end it all.”
With that, the three of us sat in chairs facing the center.
I sat in the middle.
Llednar sat at the upper-left corner while Clovis sat at the upper-right.
I may have forgotten to mention but the table is a circular wooden table. It’s also rather long.
“This is probably our last day wandering the world. Our next meeting after this would take place in the afterlife.”
I said in confirmation.
“True.”
“Umu.”
They both assented.
“On that note, where do you think we’ll go?”
I asked them.
Since we’re spirits, I’m quite curious as to where we’ll go afterwards.
Surely, we all can’t stay here in the world as ghosts.
After all, only those with regrets or strong emotions are tied down by them to this world.
Those without pass on.

This is without a doubt the truth.
“Speaking of which, I recall an old memory that occurred shortly after I died.”
This relates to the conversation at hand.
“Oh? Speak.”
“Hm?”
I began recalling the events that occurred that day.
“You see, after I died, I began wandering the mansion.”
The mansion was a bit brighter back then though countless tragedies occurred here.
“I saw a person stuck in one of the beds. A little girl… The doctor was attending to her.”
“A lass? Did the doctor kidnap her as well?”
“No… The doctor had a gentle look in his eyes without a hint of madness. They were filled with affection towards her.”
That was the only time I saw the doctor with a humane expression.
Clovis was just smiling as he paid attention to my story.
“She had some features similar to the doctor. The doctor hid from her his actions. And he treated her very gently. I stayed in that room for some time. I discovered her name was Maya and that she was the doctor’s daughter.”
I began detailing my observations.
Thought the girl was suffering from a sickness, she lived a life of happiness. She was often left alone though. But her room was filled with books and stuffed animals. She played with her stuffed animals and her dolls. She also read books her father bought for her. At night, before she went to sleep, the doctor would read books for her.
“Overall, she lived a life of bliss. I found out that her sickness was fatal. That she didn’t have much time left to live. The doctor tried everything to get her to live to no avail. Now that I think about it, although the doctor did kill for his research on preserving corpses, he mainly spent his research on getting a cure for her.”
Her sickness worsened day by day and the doctor was frantic to let her live for at least one more day…
But it was futile.
One day, Maya was finally nearing her last breath.
The doctor was with her then.
The doctor was pleading with her to stay with him.
To live on.
But it was hopeless.
His tears could not alter fate.
The girl smiled lightly.
But it was filled with sorrow.
They spoke their last words with each other and Maya passed away.
“Since I was there, I saw Maya’s spirit float. I had a brief conversation with her until I saw her get enveloped by a bright light.”
She faded away just like that and left this world.
Afterwards, the doctor spent some days in depression and buried the girl near another grave near the house. Although I could not leave the mansion, since it was just near there, I could spy through the window.
The doctor ceased his research on finding medicine and began working on methods to preserve human corpses with renewed vigor.
Even more frantic and obsessed than ever before.
I believe that solitude began pushing him deeper into madness.
“Before we knew it, the original topic regarding where we’ll go strayed…”
“Don’t mind it too much lad, we’ll get there when we do. It’s not guaranteed we’ll all meet though.”
“Indeed.”
“Speaking of spirits… I believe I saw my compatriots spirits before as well. They faded away the same way that girl did.”
Clovis interjected.
“The same way? That meant that they passed on leaving little to no regrets. Only strong feelings and emotions chain the dead towards the world of the living. Like us.”
“That’s a pretty rare event laddie.”
Llednar remarked.
“It’s very rare that some souls despite dying brutal and agonizing deaths would be able to pass on with ease here.”
I nodded.
As one born of royalty, I had the right to read a variety of books including those forbidden to others.
One book detailed such a thing.
“Regardless, we’ll eventually reunite with those individuals. I’ll see that girl again as well as my friends and the same should follow for you both.”
They both nodded.
“To ensure that happens even a moment sooner, let us fulfill our task and put an end to all of this!”
“Hahaha… Indeed, I’ll see the children at the orphanage again.”
“And I shall soon greet my compatriots!”
They both laughed.
Eager to finish our duty and reunite with those they hold dear.
Just like me.
And so with this, our tea party ends with each of us strengthening our resolve.
