Chapter 16: The Calm before the Storm

Chapter 16: The Calm before the Storm

Viola and I left the cabin and began heading out to leave this cursed forest.

I was vigilant walking at the front with my crossbow drawn and loaded while Viola had her bow ready as well.

Those beasts are quite fast.

If we let our guard down for a moment and they strike, we might fail to kill them immediately.

It will be troublesome if the strike us first, therefore, we were vigilant.

“So, have you made your decision yet on what you’ll do?”

“Not yet… I’d like to leave this dreadful place first before I make any decisions…”

So she’ll delay it until then…

Well, it’s of no concern to me since she must make a decision on her own.

Only by her own will can she move forward.

Either way, when she leaves this forest, that’s when we part ways.

“I’d like us to move faster to cover more ground to leave this place faster but we can’t really advance like that with the constant threat of attacks here…”

I sighed.

“Yes… It would be dangerous to do so…”

“Regardless, we should always be vigilant regardless of what happens.”

“Can I ask you something Sylfern?”

Oh?

“Of course. What is it?”

“Are you certain you must return to that mansion? It’s far too dangerous alone and you might suffer grievous injuries if you try to accomplish it either way.”

“True, but I must go on.”

“Can’t you leave this forest first and return to the city to gather some knights? I’m sure the Church would lend their assistance.”

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

“I’m sorry, but no matter the cost, I must go.”

She went silent for a moment after that.

“Is it so important for you to risk your life?”

“It is.”

I answer back without hesitation.

“You might consider me foolish if I tell you the entire truth… But it’s something that must be done no matter what.”

She went silent once more.

“If so, then wo-“

Suddenly, a fiendish howl was heard.

Viola immediately crouched and covered her ears while I drew my sword.

I pointed it towards the direction of the sound.

Viola shakily drew her bow.

She was still affected by that noise.

I took a look towards our rear and saw…

A pack of beasts surrounding us completely.

“This isn’t good!”

I grimaced.

“When did so many gather!?”

“They must have surrounded us silently…”

A large howl resound at the sky.

“!”

I look up to see the full moon, and a large shadow of a wolf.

It landed with a large crash but it failed to daunt it in the slightest.

Raising a howl alongside the other beasts while easily the largest one of them, over five times the regular size was a large wolf with dark fur with its jaws stained deep red in blood.

“This is!?”

The leader of the pack?
