Chapter 14: Besieged

Chapter 14: Besieged

Together with Viola, we rushed outside just in time to witness the horde of beasts charging through.

“Not good! The defenses won’t hold out at this rate!”

I grimaced.

I was prepared for this but to think that it’s just as I thought!

I never expected my newly constructed defenses to be tested this early…

If only I completed the ballista in time…

Regardless, even if I completed it, it would have been for naught.

The speed of my enemies at present is simply too fast.

I doubt the ballista would hit them…

I grabbed my crossbow and looked to my side.

Viola had already drawn her bow although she looked afraid.

“Lady Viola, aim and fire! If we persevere, we could outlast this siege!”

“Y-yes!”

Drawing her bow, she fired one at the incoming horde.

She hit one in the head, sending it down for the count.

Glancing at my enemies, I see that they were indeed the same as the one I encountered here previously.

“Aim and fire at the ones that can pass my defenses! I’ll deal with them with my sword if they get close, please aim and fire at the distant ones first!”

“I understand!”

I began firing my crossbow, aiming at the ones that get close.

The wooden stakes in the ground did their job.

The creatures simply ignored them and charged through.

They were pierced accordingly.

Although, the corpses piling make a good leverage for the rest behind to get pass them!

I continued firing.

The enemy was simply too numerous.

I kept firing alongside Viola but soon enough, we were starting to deplete the number of arrows.

Furthermore, Viola was getting tired…

“Lady Viola, please get more arrows! I’ll hold the line for now!”

She nodded and left without a word to get the arrows downstairs.

The beasts won’t strike my attacking the cabin but rather aim for me here, drawn by the battle so I won’t fear them attacking her.

For now, since I’ve lost means of attacking by range, I’ll use my sword!

I drew my sword and stood my ground.

I watched calmly as a few of them got past the defenses by jumping over the corpses of their fallen comrades!

Getting into position, I prepared myself.

The first one to reach me jumped at me baring its claws and fangs.

I dodged to the side once again and spun around, my sword in full-swing, cutting him into two.

I dashed forward and greeted the two nearest to me with my sword, cutting them down in two!

I dealt with the few that got pass the defenses… But it won’t last.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

I continued holding my ground. Defending the cabin until my sword and armor were stained with blood.

“Sylfern!”

I turned around to see Viola throwing me a quiver with several dozen arrows and fire a shot with her bow towards the beast near me.

I dashed towards her and stood between her and the other beasts.

“Be careful!”

“I know!”

I loaded my crossbow and began to fire once more.

Fortunately, we already outlasted majority of their forces so only a few were left.

Viola and I kept fighting until…

“That’s the last of them…”

I pulled my sword out of one as I said so.

“Thank goodness…”

She sat down on the ground exhausted.

Now that the battle ended, I took a look at our surroundings.

And I was stunned at what I saw.

Numerous corpses were piled high as blood was spilled everywhere.

It was a gruesome sight.

“Eeek!!!”

Viola screamed in terror at the sight.

“How horrible…”

I muttered.

But now wasn’t the time.

“Lady Viola, please rest a bit. We need to prepare fast. There’s no telling whether or not that was the last of them.”

“Yes…”

She nodded though still tired.

We headed back inside to rest a bit.

Later on, we would leave.

----------------------------------------

Greetings everyone.

I'm terribly sorry that this came out late. It was a very stressful week for me here. I even caught a cold. I always keep my word. During the past week, I've written a good number of chapters that I've prepared. Unfortunately, I can't post them yet. Don't worry, I started this novel, and I will finish it. It's not in my nature to start something I can't finish. Now then... To fulfill one last obligation, I'll tell you a short story regarding my old pet.

I once had a pet dog back when I was a child.

I named her Princess. She was quite ferocious back then. I did indeed love her although it took a while until she finally recognized me as her master. I recall being bitten by her ten times... That was painful. Especially the treatment. Onion was used to treat my injuries. That was practically torture... Some time ago, she finally recognized me as her master. Unfortunately, she had to be left at our province while I headed to the city. When I returned, she was put to sleep after biting several people. Even now I feel sad at her death and I thought I should have been with her and possibly changed something.

And that's that. I'll be back by next week. I intend to finish what I start.
