Chapter 11: Fortifications

After finishing my inspection, I returned outside.

“It’s safe to stay here.”

She’s been waiting here scared in this gloomy place.

Therefore, it’s natural for her to sigh in relief.

“Thank goodness…”

“Come inside. There’s a bedroom upstairs. You can rest there.”

While inside the cabin, I told her this.

“Then what about you?”

“As for me, I intend to fix the door first then look for food and water.”

“Thank you then…”

Viola left upstairs to sleep while I began to ponder on what I should do.

Although I was originally of royal birth, I often ran away and viewed how the commoners lived their lives. I also helped out occasionally.

As for why I said I intend to fix the door and why I can despite my said birth, is due to the reason I once learned architecture and had experience building them due to a personal reason.

My sister was stunned when I secretly built a secret base beneath the Palace Garden and she followed me there and saw it.

I had difficulty convincing her to keep quiet and that I built it and not some rogue.

Enough about my past for now.

I must fix the door.

First, I went back to the basement and got an axe.

After getting an axe, I walked away from the cabin to a slightly far away area.

As for why, it’s to avoid any unnecessary trouble.

The undead can gather due to sound, so if they hear the timber fall, they would definitely gather. Thus, I purposely went far to secure wood. After two hours, I finally gathered enough wood. To fix the door and to fortify the cabin. I then proceeded to fix the door.

After an hour or so, it was good as new.

Despite my birth, I’m quite talented at craftsmanship.

My sister and teacher were surprised at this hidden talent.

For fortifications, I built ramparts and hid traps on the way to the cabin. I also made fortifications towards the windows in consideration of the beast I killed recently living here.

There were metal shafts in the basement so I made for myself a bow and several dozen arrows.

Since there were some excess materials, I made some javelins for throwing, and some headway into constructing a ballista.

After several hours, I was finished.

Well, the ballista still needs some more work into it.

It’s only halfway complete.

Before me, stood a heavily fortified cabin, build to withstand massive assault by hordes of undead beasts.

And a nearly-complete ballista.

I find myself very fortunate that I’m undead and that I don’t sweat nor do I feel fatigue.

If I wish, I could easily keep doing this until completion.

I smiled in satisfaction seeing my work as I ponder on the benefits of my current state.

With this layout, it should hold for several hours until I finish off all enemy advancing forward or enough time for me to seize an escape route and run.

In that case, I may need to construct a back-up area just in case I need to retreat…

For that purpose, I would need to create a tunnel…

And if undead try to chase after me, I would simply collapse the tunnel sealing the route towards me.

I still have some work left for me to do…

First, I’ll gather more wood.

Enough to finish my ballista and use the excess for ammo.

As I pondered on future tasks, I heard footsteps.

Must be Viola.

“Sylfern…?”

She called sleepily.

I turned around to see Viola stunned at my progress.

“Oh, did you have a nice sleep?”
