Chapter 13: The Enemy approaches

After chatting a bit, Viola went upstairs to prepare herself to leave.

As for me, I headed to the basement to begin prior preparations.

I didn’t need to check the defenses.

The defenses I prepared are quite formidable and I made sure there are no openings or weaknesses in constructing them.

Now, in the basement, I began outfitting myself up with the various armors and weapons.

Since I’m far used to using speed, I’ll aim to arm myself with light armor and leather.

I have no need to fear of bites or the like as my body has no such weakness.

I just need to ensure my limbs stay intact to battle without any trouble.

For weapons, I armed myself with a crossbow and several dozen arrows.

My sword should be sufficient but in case it dulls due to blood, I’ll need a spare.

Thus, I brought two daggers with me to carry in my waist.

Of course, I made sure that they would remain unseen.

According to an old traveler who I once met, carrying unseen weapons can easily determine life and death in battle and turn the tides at once.

Indeed, a well-prepared surprise by a certain general can easily turn back the tides of war to claim victory from the jaws of defeat.

I inspected my equipment properly and I outfitted myself as lightly as possible with the best equipment possible.

An hour or two passed like that.

“KYAHHHHH!!!”

That voice… Viola!?

Shocked, I immediately hurried upstairs while bringing my weapons in full gear.

I rushed past the first floor towards the second floor and kicked the door open.

When I opened it, I saw Viola staring outside towards the windows.

I judged that there was no problem with her.

Then…

“Lady Viola, what’s wrong!?”

She turned around with great fright in her eyes.

“Outside! We’re surrounded!”

“What!?”

I was greatly shocked by this turn of events.

I ran towards the window and took a look outside.

“Oh no…”

When I looked, I saw several dozen gray figures running towards us.

They were similar to the beast I killed before.

And by the looks of it, they managed to surround us.

“If that many rush at us at once… The defenses won’t hold!”

I grimaced.

“Then… What should we do…?”

She asked me with great fear in her eyes.

“What else can we do? Grab your bow and help me ward them off! The defense would hold and kill majority of them but a few would definitely get past them! Hurry and join me outside, we’ll strike them from afar and let the traps I’ve left to deal with them.”

I hurriedly gave clear directions.

She nodded gravely though there was still fear in her eyes.

Together, we headed downstairs.

I was outfitting myself with the best equipment possible so I’m ready.

As for Viola, passing her a bow and several dozen arrows would suffice for now.

Time is of the essence, we can’t delay no matter what!

After that, we headed outside to face the imminent danger approaching us.
